¹⁹ and said to Moses, ^(A)“You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”

¹⁶ just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb ^(A)on the day of the assembly, when you said, ^(B)‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’

³⁸ This is the one ^(A)who was in the congregation in the wilderness with ^(B)the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. ^(C)He received ^(D)living ^(E)oracles to give to us.

¹⁹ Why then the law? ^(A)It was added because of transgressions, ^(B)until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was ^(C)put in place through angels ^(D)by an intermediary.

²³ And ^(A)as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. ²⁴ And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and ^(B)greatness, and ^(C)we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man ^(D)still live. ²⁵ Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. ^(E)If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. ^26 (F)For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? ²⁷ Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and ^(G)speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’

²⁰ But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for ^(A)man shall not see me and live.”

^5 (A)while I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For ^(B)you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

³⁰ So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel,^[a] saying, “For ^(A)I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.”

¹⁹ and ^(A)the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words ^(B)made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them.
