³ But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of ^(A)bulrushes for him, daubed it with ^(B)asphalt and ^(C)pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds ^(D)by the river’s bank.

²² So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, ^(A)“Every son who is ^[a]born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

¹⁹ This man dealt treacherously with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, ^(A)making them expose their babies, so that they might not live.

¹⁴ Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make ^[a]rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.

Massacre of the Innocents

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.

The Flight into Egypt

¹³ Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”

³ Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and ^[a]bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.
