¹⁵ When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill^(A) Moses, but Moses fled^(B) from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian,^(C) where he sat down by a well.

²⁷ By faith he left Egypt,^(A) not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.

²⁹ When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.^(A)

² There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well.^(A) The stone^(B) over the mouth of the well was large.

¹¹ He had the camels kneel down near the well^(A) outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.^(B)

⁶ Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

²³ When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.^(A)

¹³ When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face^(A) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

¹⁴ He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,^(B) and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Elijah Flees to Horeb

19 Now Ahab told Jezebel^(A) everything Elijah had done and how he had killed^(B) all the prophets with the sword. ² So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,^(C) if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”^(D)

³ Elijah was afraid^[a] and ran^(E) for his life.^(F) When he came to Beersheba^(G) in Judah, he left his servant there,
