⁵ Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain^(A) of God.

Moses and the Burning Bush

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro^(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,^(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,^(C) the mountain^(D) of God.

¹² And God said, “I will be with you.^(A) And this will be the sign^(B) to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you^[a] will worship God on this mountain.^(C)”

⁸ So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty^(A) days and forty nights until he reached Horeb,^(B) the mountain of God.

¹⁶ and the glory^(A) of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai.^(B) For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud.^{(C) 17} To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire^(D) on top of the mountain.

²⁰ The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai^(A) and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up

¹¹ and be ready by the third day,^(A) because on that day the Lord will come down^(B) on Mount Sinai^(C) in the sight of all the people.
