Amalek Attacks Israel and Is Defeated

⁸ Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.^(A)

² Thus says the Lord of hosts: I will punish the Amalekites for what they did in opposing the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.^(A)

¹⁷ “Remember what Amalek did to you on your journey out of Egypt,^{(A) 18} how he attacked you on the way, when you were faint and weary, and struck down all who lagged behind you; he did not fear God. ¹⁹ Therefore when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies on every hand, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; do not forget.^(B)

¹² Timna was a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son; she bore Amalek to Eliphaz. These were the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.^(A)

David Avenges the Destruction of Ziklag

30 Now when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negeb and on Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag, burned it down,^(A)

²⁰ Then he looked on Amalek and uttered his oracle, saying,

¹⁶ Korah, Gatam, and Amalek; these are the clans^[a] of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; they are the sons of Adah.
