¹⁴ “In days to come, when your son^(A) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.^(B)

⁶ to serve as a sign^(A) among you. In the future, when your children^(B) ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’^(C)

³ Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt,^(A) out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand.^(B) Eat nothing containing yeast.^(C)

²⁰ In the future, when your son asks you,^(A) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” ²¹ tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.^{(B) 22} Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. ²³ But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. ²⁴ The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,^(C) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.^(D)

²⁶ And when your children^(A) ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ ²⁷ then tell them, ‘It is the Passover^(B) sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’”^(C) Then the people bowed down and worshiped.^(D)

²⁴ “No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the Lord, the God of Israel?

²¹ He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’^{(A) 22} tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’^{(B) 23} For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea^[a] when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.^{(C) 24} He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know^(D) that the hand of the Lord is powerful^(E) and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.^(F)”

⁹ This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand^(A) and a reminder on your forehead^(B) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.^(C)
