⁵ In all, Jacob had seventy^[a] descendants in Egypt, including Joseph, who was already there.

²² When your ancestors went down into Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky!

²⁶ The total number of Jacob’s direct descendants who went with him to Egypt, not counting his sons’ wives, was sixty-six. ²⁷ In addition, Joseph had two sons^[a] who were born in Egypt. So altogether, there were seventy^[b] members of Jacob’s family in the land of Egypt.

²⁰ So God was good to the midwives, and the Israelites continued to multiply, growing more and more powerful.
