¹² But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel.

⁹ And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and ^(A)mightier than we;

²⁸ And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those ^(A)who are the called according to His purpose.

²⁸ saying, ^(A)“Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, ^(B)and intend to bring this Man’s ^(C)blood on us!”

²⁹ But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: ^(D)“We ought to obey God rather than men. ^30 (E)The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by ^(F)hanging on a tree. ^31 (G)Him God has exalted to His right hand to be ^(H)Prince and ^(I)Savior, ^(J)to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. ³² And ^(K)we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit ^(L)whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Advice

³³ When they heard this, they were ^(M)furious^[a] and plotted to kill them.

² being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. ³ And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. ⁴ However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

¹⁹ The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, ^(A)“You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”

^7 (B)If^[a] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what ^(C)son is there whom a father does not chasten? ⁸ But if you are without chastening, ^(D)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to ^(E)the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, ^(F)that we may be partakers of His holiness. ¹¹ Now no ^[b]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields ^(G)the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
