² After they set out from Rephidim,^(A) they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.^(B)

Water From the Rock

17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin,^(A) traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim,^(B) but there was no water^(C) for the people to drink.

Moses and the Burning Bush

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro^(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,^(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,^(C) the mountain^(D) of God.

¹² And God said, “I will be with you.^(A) And this will be the sign^(B) to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you^[a] will worship God on this mountain.^(C)”

⁵ Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain^(A) of God.
