The King Helps the Jews
8 That same day King Xerxes gave Queen Esther everything Haman had left when he died. Haman had been the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came in to see the king. He came because Esther had told the king how he was related to her. 2 Then the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken back from Haman. And he gave it to Mordecai. Then Esther put Mordecai in charge of everything Haman had left when he died.
3 Once again Esther spoke to the king. She fell at the king’s feet and cried. She begged the king to stop the evil plan of Haman the Agagite. Haman had thought up the plan against the Jews. 4 The king held out the gold scepter to Esther. Esther got up and stood in front of the king.
5 She said, “My king, I hope you are pleased with me. And maybe it will please you to do this. You might think it is the right thing to do. And maybe you are happy with me. If so, let an order be written to cancel the letters Haman wrote. 6 I could not stand to see that terrible thing happen to my people. I could not stand to see my family killed.”
7 King Xerxes answered Queen Esther and Mordecai the Jew. He said, “Because Haman was against the Jews, I have given his things to Esther. And my soldiers have hanged him. 8 Now write another order in the king’s name. Write it to the Jews as it seems best to you. Then seal the order with the king’s signet ring. No letter written in the king’s name and sealed with his signet ring can be canceled.”
9 At that time the king’s secretaries were called. This was done on the twenty-third day of the third month, which is Sivan. The secretaries wrote out all of Mordecai’s orders. They wrote to the Jews and to the governors and to the captains of the soldiers in each area. And they wrote to the important men of the 127 areas which reached from India to Cush. They wrote to each area in its own form of writing. And they wrote to each group of people in their own language. They also wrote to the Jews in their own form of writing and their own language. 10 Mordecai wrote orders in the name of King Xerxes. And he sealed the letters with the king’s signet ring. Then he sent the king’s orders by messengers on horses. The messengers rode fast horses, which were raised just for the king.
11 These were the king’s orders: The Jews in every city have the right to gather together to protect themselves. They have the right to destroy, kill and completely wipe out the army of any area or people who attack them. And they are to do the same to the women and children of that army. The Jews also have the right to take by force the property of the enemies. 12 The one day set for the Jews to do this was the thirteenth day of the twelfth month. This was the month of Adar. They were allowed to do this in all the empire of King Xerxes. 13 A copy of the king’s order was to be sent out as a law in every area. It was to be made known to the people of every nation living in the kingdom. This was so the Jews would be ready on that set day. The Jews would be allowed to pay back their enemies.
14 The messengers hurried out, riding on the royal horses. The king commanded those messengers to hurry. And the order was also given in the palace at Susa.
15 Mordecai left the king’s presence wearing royal clothes. They were blue and white. And he had on a large gold crown. He also had a purple robe made of the best linen. And the people of Susa shouted for joy. 16 It was a time of happiness, joy, gladness and honor for the Jews. 17 The king’s order went to every area and city. And there was joy and gladness among the Jews. This happened in every area and city to which the king’s order went. The Jews were having feasts and celebrating. And many people through all the empire became Jews. They did that because they were afraid of the Jews.

Esther Saves the Jews
8 On that day King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, (A)the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told (B)what he was to her. 2 (C)And the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.
3 Then Esther spoke again to the king. She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan of Haman (D)the Agagite and the plot that he had devised against the Jews. 4 (E)When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, Esther rose and stood before the king. 5 And she said, “If it please the king, (F)and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seems right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke (G)the letters devised by Haman (H)the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. 6 For how can I bear (I)to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?” 7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Behold, (J)I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows,[a] because he intended to lay hands on the Jews. 8 But you may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, (K)and seal it with the king's ring, for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring (L)cannot be revoked.”
9 (M)The king's scribes were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day. And an edict was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to (N)the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces (O)from India to Ethiopia, (P)127 provinces, (Q)to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language. 10 (R)And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus (S)and sealed it with the king's signet ring. Then he sent the letters by mounted couriers riding on (T)swift horses that were used in the king's service, bred from the royal stud, 11 saying that the king allowed the Jews who were in every city (U)to gather and defend their lives, (V)to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, children and women included, (W)and to plunder their goods, 12 (X)on one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. 13 (Y)A copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province, being publicly displayed to all peoples, and the Jews were to be ready on that day to take vengeance on their enemies. 14 So the couriers, mounted on their (Z)swift horses that were used in the king's service, rode out hurriedly, urged by the king's command. And the decree was issued in Susa the citadel.
15 Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king (AA)in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown[b] and (AB)a robe of fine linen and purple, (AC)and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. 16 The Jews had (AD)light and gladness and joy and honor. 17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and (AE)a holiday. (AF)And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, (AG)for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

8 El mismo día, el rey Asuero dio a la reina Ester la casa de Amán enemigo de los judíos; y Mardoqueo vino delante del rey, porque Ester le declaró lo que él era respecto de ella.
2 Y se quitó el rey el anillo que recogió de Amán, y lo dio a Mardoqueo. Y Ester puso a Mardoqueo sobre la casa de Amán.
3 Volvió luego Ester a hablar delante del rey, y se echó a sus pies, llorando y rogándole que hiciese nula la maldad de Amán agagueo y su designio que había tramado contra los judíos.
4 Entonces el rey extendió a Ester el cetro de oro, y Ester se levantó, y se puso en pie delante del rey,
5 y dijo: Si place al rey, y si he hallado gracia delante de él, y si le parece acertado al rey, y yo soy agradable a sus ojos, que se dé orden escrita para revocar las cartas que autorizan la trama de Amán hijo de Hamedatá agagueo, que escribió para destruir a los judíos que están en todas las provincias del rey.
6 Porque ¿cómo podré yo ver la desgracia que amenaza a mi pueblo y la ruina de mi pueblo?
7 Respondió el rey Asuero a la reina Ester y a Mardoqueo el judío: He aquí, yo he dado a Ester la casa de Amán, y a él han colgado en la horca, por cuanto extendió su mano contra los judíos.
8 Escribid, pues, vosotros a los judíos como bien os parezca, en nombre del rey, y selladlo con el anillo del rey; porque un edicto que se escribe en nombre del rey, y se sella con el anillo del rey, no puede ser revocado.
9 Entonces fueron llamados los escribanos del rey en el mes tercero, que es Siván, a los veintitrés días de ese mes; y se escribió conforme a todo lo que mandó Mardoqueo, a los judíos, y a los sátrapas, los capitanes y los príncipes de las provincias que había desde la India hasta Etiopía, ciento veintisiete provincias; a cada provincia según su escritura, y a cada pueblo conforme a su lengua, a los judíos también conforme a su escritura y lengua.
10 Y escribió en nombre del rey Asuero, y lo selló con el anillo del rey, y envió cartas por medio de correos montados en caballos veloces procedentes de las caballerizas reales;
11 que el rey daba facultad a los judíos que estaban en todas las ciudades, para que se reuniesen y estuviesen a la defensa de su vida, prontos a destruir, y matar, y acabar con toda fuerza armada del pueblo o provincia que viniese contra ellos, y aun sus niños y mujeres, y apoderarse de sus bienes,
12 en un mismo día en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, en el día trece del mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar.
13 La copia del edicto que había de darse por decreto en cada provincia, para que fuese conocido por todos los pueblos, decía que los judíos estuviesen preparados para aquel día, para vengarse de sus enemigos.
14 Los correos, pues, montados en caballos veloces, salieron a toda prisa por la orden del rey; y el edicto fue dado en Susa capital del reino.
15 Y salió Mardoqueo de delante del rey con vestido real de azul y blanco, y una gran corona de oro, y un manto de lino y púrpura. La ciudad de Susa entonces se alegró y regocijó;
16 y los judíos tuvieron luz y alegría, y gozo y honra.
17 Y en cada provincia y en cada ciudad donde llegó el mandamiento del rey, los judíos tuvieron alegría y gozo, banquete y día de placer. Y muchos de entre los pueblos de la tierra se hacían judíos, porque el temor de los judíos había caído sobre ellos.
