4 5 Mordecai giveth the Queen knowledge of the cruel decree of the king against the Jews. 16 She willeth that they pray for her.
1 Now when Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth, and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a great cry, and a bitter.
2 And he came even before the King’s [a]gate, but he might not enter within the king’s gate, being clothed with sackcloth.
3 And in every province and place, whither the king’s charge and his commission came, there was great sorrow among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and mourning, and [b]many lay in sackcloth and in ashes.
4 ¶ Then Esther’s maids and her Eunuchs came and told it her: therefore the queen was very heavy, and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him, but he received it not.
5 Then called Esther Hathach one of the King’s eunuchs, whom he [c]had appointed to serve her, and gave him a commandment unto Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
6 So Hathach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king’s gate.
7 And Mordecai told him of all that which had come unto him, and of the [d]sum of the silver that Haman had promised to pay unto the King’s treasures, because of the Jews, for to destroy them.
8 Also he gave him the [e]copy of the writing and commission that was given at Shushan, to destroy them, that he might show it unto Esther and declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in to the king, and make petition and supplication before him for her people.
9 ¶ So when Hathach came, he told Esther the words of Mordecai.
10 Then Esther said unto Hathach, and commanded him to say unto Mordecai,
11 All the king’s servants and the people of the King’s provinces do know, That whosoever, man or woman, that cometh to the king into the inner court, which is not called, there is a law of his, that he shall die, except him to whom the king holdeth out the golden rod, that he may live. Now I have not been called to come unto the king these thirty days.
12 And they certified Mordecai of Esther’s words.
13 And Mordecai said, that they should answer Esther thus, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.
14 For if thou holdest thy peace at this time, [f]comfort and deliverance [g]shall appear to the Jews out of another place, but thou and thy father’s house shall perish: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for [h]such a time?
15 Then Esther commanded to answer Mordecai,
16 Go, and assemble all the Jews that are found in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and eat not, nor drink in three days, day nor night. I also and my maids will fast likewise, and so will I go in to the King, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, [i]I perish.
17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

Mordechai fordert Esther auf, sich für die Rettung der Juden einzusetzen
4 Als nun Mordechai alles erfuhr, was geschehen war, da zerriss Mordechai seine Kleider und kleidete sich in Sack und Asche und ging in die Stadt hinein und klagte laut und bitterlich.
2 Und er kam bis vor das Tor des Königs; denn es durfte niemand zum Tor des Königs eingehen, der in Sacktuch gekleidet war.
3 Auch in allen Provinzen, wo immer das Wort und Gebot des Königs hinkam, war unter den Juden große Trauer und Fasten und Weinen und Wehklage, und viele lagen auf Sacktuch und in der Asche.
4 Und die Mägde der Esther und ihre Kämmerer kamen und sagten es ihr; und die Königin erschrak sehr. Und sie sandte Kleider, damit Mordechai sie anziehe und das Sacktuch ablege. Aber er nahm sie nicht an.
5 Da rief Esther den Hatach, einen Kämmerer des Königs, den er zu ihrem Dienst bestimmt hatte, und gab ihm Befehl, bei Mordechai in Erfahrung zu bringen, was das bedeute und warum es geschehe.
6 Da ging Hatach zu Mordechai hinaus auf den Platz der Stadt, vor das Tor des Königs.
7 Und Mordechai berichtete ihm alles, was ihm begegnet war, auch die genaue Summe Silber, die Haman versprochen hatte, in den Schatzkammern des Königs abzuwiegen als Entgelt für die Vertilgung der Juden.
8 Und er gab ihm die Abschrift des schriftlichen Befehls, der zu ihrer Vertilgung in Susan erlassen worden war, damit er ihn Esther zeige und ihr berichte und sie auffordere, zum König hineinzugehen, um seine Gnade zu erflehen und vor seinem Angesicht für ihr Volk zu bitten.
9 Da ging Hatach hinein und berichtete Esther die Worte Mordechais.
10 Da sprach Esther zu Hatach und befahl ihm, Mordechai zu sagen:
11 »Alle Knechte des Königs und die Leute in den königlichen Provinzen wissen, dass, wer irgend in den inneren Hof zum König hineingeht, es sei Mann oder Frau, ohne gerufen zu sein, nach dem gleichen Gesetz sterben muss, es sei denn, dass ihm der König das goldene Zepter entgegenstreckt, damit er am Leben bleibe. Ich aber bin nun seit 30 Tagen nicht gerufen worden, dass ich zum König hineingehen sollte!«
12 Als nun Esthers Worte dem Mordechai mitgeteilt wurden,
13 da ließ Mordechai der Esther antworten: »Denke nicht in deinem Herzen, dass du vor allen Juden entkommen würdest, weil du im Haus des Königs bist!
14 Denn wenn du jetzt schweigst, so wird von einer anderen Seite her Befreiung und Rettung für die Juden kommen, du aber und das Haus deines Vaters werden untergehen. Und wer weiß, ob du nicht gerade wegen einer Zeit wie dieser zum Königtum gekommen bist?«
15 Da ließ Esther dem Mordechai antworten:
16 »So geh hin, versammle alle Juden, die in Susan anwesend sind, und fastet für mich, drei Tage lang bei Tag und Nacht, esst und trinkt nicht. Auch ich will mit meinen Mägden so fasten, und dann will ich zum König hineingehen, obgleich es nicht nach dem Gesetz ist. Komme ich um, so komme ich um!«
17 Und Mordechai ging hin und machte alles ganz so, wie Esther es ihm geboten hatte.
