II.— PROYECTO DE AMÁN PARA EXTERMINAR A LOS JUDÍOS (3—5)
Mardoqueo y Amán
3 Algún tiempo después, el rey Asuero elevó a un alto cargo a Amán, hijo de Hamdatá, de la región de Agag, dándole preeminencia sobre el resto de los oficiales como él. 2 A su paso, todos los servidores del palacio se arrodillaban e inclinaban la cabeza ante él, porque así lo había ordenado el rey. Pero Mardoqueo no se arrodillaba ni inclinaba la cabeza a su paso.
3 Entonces los guardias reales que custodiaban la puerta del palacio le preguntaron a Mardoqueo:
— Y tú, ¿por qué desobedeces el mandato real?
4 Y como todos los días le preguntaban lo mismo, y él no les hacía caso, lo denunciaron a Amán, para ver si valían sus excusas, pues les había declarado que era judío. 5 Al comprobar Amán que Mardoqueo no se arrodillaba ni inclinaba la cabeza a su paso, montó en cólera. 6 Y al saber que Mardoqueo era judío, decidió no solo castigarlo a él, sino exterminar con él a todos los de su raza, a todos los judíos que vivían en el reino de Asuero.
El decreto real contra los judíos
7 Para determinar el día y el mes, se celebró ante Amán en el primer mes, que es el mes de Nisán, del año duodécimo del reinado de Asuero, el sorteo llamado “pur”. Y la suerte cayó en el día trece del duodécimo mes, el mes de Adar. 8 Y dijo Amán al rey Asuero:
— Entre todos los pueblos que forman las provincias de tu imperio existe uno que vive separado y disperso; se rige por leyes diferentes a las de los otros pueblos y no obedece las leyes del rey. No creo que convenga al rey tolerarlos. 9 Por lo tanto, si al rey le parece bien, emita un decreto para exterminarlos, y yo contribuiré con diez mil talentos de plata a la hacienda real para realizar esta labor.
10 Entonces el rey se quitó el anillo y se lo dio a Amán, hijo de Hamdatá, de la región de Agag, enemigo de los judíos, 11 diciendo:
— Puedes quedarte con la plata, y haz con ese pueblo lo que mejor te parezca.
12 El día trece del mes primero fueron convocados los secretarios reales. Estos redactaron en la escritura de cada provincia y en la lengua de cada pueblo, todo lo que Amán ordenaba a los sátrapas reales, a los gobernadores de cada una de las provincias y a los jefes de cada pueblo. Todo se escribió en nombre del rey Asuero y se selló con el anillo real. 13 Luego, los mensajeros llevaron estos documentos a todas las provincias del reino con la orden de destruir, matar y exterminar en un solo día, el día trece del duodécimo mes, es decir el mes de Adar, a todos los judíos, jóvenes y ancianos, niños y mujeres, y de apoderarse de todos sus bienes 14 El texto de este edicto debía ser promulgado como ley en todas las provincias y en todos los pueblos a fin de que estuvieran preparados para ese día.
15 Los mensajeros partieron de inmediato con la orden real. El edicto se hizo público también en la ciudadela de Susa. Y mientras el rey y Amán se dedicaban a banquetear, en la ciudad de Susa reinaba la consternación.

Haman Plots Against the Jews
3 After these things King Ahasuerus (A)promoted Haman (B)the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, (C)and advanced him and set his throne above all the officials who were with him. 2 And all the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. (D)But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage. 3 Then the king's servants who were (E)at the king's gate said to Mordecai, “Why do you transgress (F)the king's command?” 4 And when they spoke to him day after day and he would not listen to them, they told Haman, in order to see whether Mordecai's words would stand, for he had told them that he was a Jew. 5 And when Haman saw that (G)Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage to him, Haman was (H)filled with fury. 6 But he disdained[a] to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy[b] all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.
7 In the first month, which is the month of Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, (I)they cast Pur (that is, they cast lots) before Haman day after day; and they cast it month after month till the twelfth month, which is (J)the month of Adar. 8 Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom. (K)Their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king's laws, so that it is not to the king's profit to tolerate them. 9 If it please the king, let it be decreed that they be destroyed, and I will pay 10,000 talents[c] of silver into the hands of those who have charge of the king's business, that they may put it into the king's treasuries.” 10 (L)So the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman (M)the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, (N)the enemy of the Jews. 11 And the king said to Haman, “The money is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.”
12 (O)Then the king's scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and an edict, according to all that Haman commanded, was written to the king's (P)satraps and to the governors over all the provinces and to the officials of all the peoples, (Q)to every province in its own script and every people in its own language. It was written (R)in the name of King Ahasuerus (S)and sealed with the king's signet ring. 13 Letters were sent (T)by couriers to all the king's provinces with instruction (U)to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, (V)in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, (W)and to plunder their goods. 14 (X)A copy of the document was to be issued as a decree in every province by proclamation to all the peoples to be ready for that day. 15 (Y)The couriers went out hurriedly by order of the king, and the decree was issued in Susa the citadel. And the king and Haman sat down to drink, (Z)but the city of Susa was thrown into confusion.
