Koningin Vasti door Ahasveros verbannen
1 Koning Ahasveros was een machtig koning. Hij heerste over het enorme rijk van Perzië en Medië. Dat strekte zich met zijn honderdzevenentwintig gewesten uit van India tot Ethiopië. 2 In zijn derde regeringsjaar gaf de koning een onvoorstelbaar groot feest in zijn paleis in de stad Susan. 3 Alle gouverneurs, topambtenaren en de hele legerleiding werden uitgenodigd. Uit alle delen van zijn rijk kwamen de gasten. 4 De feestelijkheden duurden een half jaar. Het was één grote demonstratie van rijkdom, pracht en praal.
5 Na afloop van deze festiviteiten gaf de koning een apart feest voor alle mannelijke leden van zijn hofhouding, van kamerheer tot keukenknecht. Zeven dagen lang vierden ze feest in de voorhof van de paleistuin. 6 Groene, witte en blauwe gordijnen waren met linnen en purperen koorden vastgemaakt aan zilveren knoppen. Deze waren weer aan witmarmeren zuilen bevestigd. Gouden en zilveren rustbedden stonden op een mozaïekvloer van albast, witmarmer, parelmoer en stenen van allerlei kleuren. 7 De gasten dronken uit gouden bekers, elk van een ander ontwerp. Er was koninklijke wijn in overvloed, zoals men van een koning mocht verwachten. 8 Er gold maar één regel, namelijk dat er geen beperkingen waren. De koning had zijn hofmeesters opdracht gegeven aan ieders wensen tegemoet te komen.
9 Tegelijkertijd gaf koningin Vasti een feest voor de vrouwen in het paleis. 10 Op de laatste dag van het feest riep de halfdronken koning zijn zeven persoonlijke bedienden Mehuman, Bizta, Harbona, Bigta, Abagta, Zethar en Karkas bij zich. 11 Hij beval hun koningin Vasti te halen. Zij moest haar kroon dragen, zodat alle gasten haar schoonheid konden bewonderen, want zij was een bijzonder mooie vrouw. 12 Maar toen zij het bevel van de koning aan koningin Vasti overbrachten, weigerde zij te komen. Dit maakte de koning woedend. 13 Hij raadpleegde echter eerst zijn adviseurs, want hij deed nooit iets buiten hen om. Het waren wijze mannen, die kennis bezaten van astrologie en rechtsgeleerdheid. 14 Deze mannen heetten Karsena, Sethar, Admatha, Tarsis, Meres, Marsena en Memukan. Zij waren niet alleen de persoonlijke vrienden van de koning, maar ook zijn hoogste regeringsambtenaren. 15 ‘Vertel mij wat ik moet doen,’ vroeg hij hun. ‘Wat moet er volgens de wet gebeuren met koningin Vasti, nu zij geen gevolg heeft gegeven aan het bevel dat ik haar door mijn hovelingen heb laten overbrengen.’ 16 Memukan antwoordde namens de anderen: ‘Koningin Vasti heeft zich niet alleen tegen u misdragen, maar ook tegen al uw regeringsvertegenwoordigers en onderdanen. 17 Deze daad zal algemeen bekend worden en overal zullen vrouwen hun man ongehoorzaam worden als zij horen wat koningin Vasti heeft gedaan. 18 Nog voor deze dag om is, horen de vrouwen van alle ministers in het rijk hoe de koningin zich heeft misdragen. Zij zullen een voorbeeld aan haar nemen en hun echtgenoten net zo behandelen. Dit zal veel minachting en woede opwekken. 19 Wij stellen voor dat u, als u het goed vindt, een koninklijk besluit uitvaardigt, een wet van Meden en Perzen, die niet kan worden herroepen. Daarin kondigt u aan dat koningin Vasti uit uw nabijheid wordt gebannen. En u maakt bekend een nieuwe koningin te zullen kiezen die zich waardiger gedraagt. 20 Als dit besluit wordt afgekondigd in uw hele rijk, zullen alle mannen, ongeacht hun rang of stand, weer worden gerespecteerd door hun echtgenotes!’
21 De koning en de andere adviseurs vonden dit een uitstekend voorstel. Dus volgde hij Memukans raad op 22 en stuurde brieven naar alle gewesten, elk in hun eigen taal. Hij benadrukte dat in huis de mannen de leiding hadden en hun gezag niet moesten laten betwisten.

Queen Vashti Deposed
1 This is what happened during the time of Xerxes,[a](A) the Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces(B) stretching from India to Cush[b]:(C) 2 At that time King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa,(D) 3 and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet(E) for all his nobles and officials. The military leaders of Persia and Media, the princes, and the nobles of the provinces were present.
4 For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and glory of his majesty. 5 When these days were over, the king gave a banquet, lasting seven days,(F) in the enclosed garden(G) of the king’s palace, for all the people from the least to the greatest who were in the citadel of Susa. 6 The garden had hangings of white and blue linen, fastened with cords of white linen and purple material to silver rings on marble pillars. There were couches(H) of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and other costly stones. 7 Wine was served in goblets of gold, each one different from the other, and the royal wine was abundant, in keeping with the king’s liberality.(I) 8 By the king’s command each guest was allowed to drink with no restrictions, for the king instructed all the wine stewards to serve each man what he wished.
9 Queen Vashti also gave a banquet(J) for the women in the royal palace of King Xerxes.
10 On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits(K) from wine,(L) he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him—Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona,(M) Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Karkas— 11 to bring(N) before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty(O) to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at. 12 But when the attendants delivered the king’s command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger.(P)
13 Since it was customary for the king to consult experts in matters of law and justice, he spoke with the wise men who understood the times(Q) 14 and were closest to the king—Karshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memukan, the seven nobles(R) of Persia and Media who had special access to the king and were highest in the kingdom.
15 “According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?” he asked. “She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her.”
16 Then Memukan replied in the presence of the king and the nobles, “Queen Vashti has done wrong, not only against the king but also against all the nobles and the peoples of all the provinces of King Xerxes. 17 For the queen’s conduct will become known to all the women, and so they will despise their husbands and say, ‘King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come.’ 18 This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility who have heard about the queen’s conduct will respond to all the king’s nobles in the same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord.(S)
19 “Therefore, if it pleases the king,(T) let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed,(U) that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she. 20 Then when the king’s edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest.”
21 The king and his nobles were pleased with this advice, so the king did as Memukan proposed. 22 He sent dispatches to all parts of the kingdom, to each province in its own script and to each people in their own language,(V) proclaiming that every man should be ruler over his own household, using his native tongue.

1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)
2 That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,
3 In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:
4 When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.
5 And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;
6 Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.
7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.
8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.
9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.
10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
13 Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
14 And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)
15 What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
17 For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
18 Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
20 And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
22 For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
