2 Más tarde, cuando al rey Asuero se le pasó el enojo, se acordó de Vasti y de lo que ella había hecho, y de lo que se había ordenado contra ella. 2-4 Entonces los consejeros le dijeron al rey:
—Su Majestad debe nombrar asistentes en todas las provincias del país, para que busquen jóvenes hermosas y solteras. Esas jóvenes deberán ser llevadas a la casa de las mujeres, en su palacio. Allí estarán bajo el cuidado de Hegai, su hombre de confianza a cargo de las mujeres, para que les dé un tratamiento de belleza. Entonces Su Majestad elegirá a la joven que más le guste, y la nombrará reina en lugar de Vasti.
Esto agradó al rey, y así se hizo.
Ester llega al palacio
5 En Susa vivía un judío de la tribu de Benjamín, llamado Mardoqueo hijo de Jaír, nieto de Simí y bisnieto de Quis. 6 Era uno de los prisioneros que Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, se había llevado de Jerusalén junto con el rey Joaquín de Judá. 7 Mardoqueo había criado a una prima suya llamada Ester, porque era huérfana. Cuando murieron sus padres, Mardoqueo la adoptó como hija propia. Ester era muy hermosa y elegante.
8 Cuando se conoció la orden dada por el rey, muchas jóvenes fueron llevadas al palacio, y quedaron al cuidado de Hegai. Entre ellas estaba Ester. 9 Hegai se fijó en ella, y le agradó tanto que, enseguida, ordenó que se le dieran cremas de belleza y comida especial. También le ordenó a siete de las mejores muchachas del palacio que atendieran a Ester, y que le dieran una de las mejores habitaciones en la casa de las mujeres.
10 Ester no decía de qué pueblo ni de qué raza era ella, porque Mardoqueo le había pedido que no se lo dijera a nadie. 11 Todos los días Mardoqueo iba y venía por el patio de la casa de las mujeres, para ver si Ester estaba bien y cómo la trataban.
12 Las jóvenes debían presentarse por turno ante el rey, pero antes de hacerlo se debían someter a un tratamiento de belleza durante doce meses, pues ésa era la costumbre. Los primeros seis meses debían untarse aceite de mirra en sus cuerpos, y el resto del tiempo ponerse perfumes y cremas.
13 A cada joven que se presentaba ante el rey en el palacio, se le permitía vestir la ropa y las joyas que ella escogiera en la casa de las mujeres. 14 Cada joven se iba al palacio al atardecer, y a la mañana siguiente se retiraba a otra sección de la casa de las mujeres, la cual estaba a cargo de Saasgaz, otro hombre de confianza del rey. Sólo volvía a presentarse ante el rey si él lo deseaba y la mandaba llamar por nombre.
Ester es elegida reina
15-16 El padre de Ester se llamaba Abihail, y fue tío de Mardoqueo. Ester se había ganado el aprecio de todos en el palacio, y cuando le llegó el turno de presentarse ante el rey, fue vestida con la ropa que Hegai le aconsejó ponerse. Era el mes de Tébet,[a] del séptimo año del reinado de Asuero.
17 Al rey Asuero le gustó Ester más que todas las otras jóvenes, y la trató mejor que a todas sus mujeres, así que le colocó la corona sobre su cabeza y la nombró reina en lugar de Vasti. 18 Después el rey hizo una gran fiesta para Ester. A esa fiesta invitó a todos los funcionarios y colaboradores de su reino. También rebajó los impuestos, y repartió excelentes regalos, dignos de un rey.
Mardoqueo descubre un plan para matar al rey
19-20 Ester obedecía a Mardoqueo desde niña, y aún continuaba haciéndolo. Nadie sabía de qué familia ni de qué raza era ella, porque Mardoqueo le había ordenado no decirlo. Un día, mientras las jóvenes se reunían en la otra sección de la casa de las mujeres, Mardoqueo se sentó a la entrada del palacio real 21 y escuchó hablar a dos oficiales del rey que vigilaban la entrada del palacio. Eran Bigtán y Teres, que estaban muy enojados con el rey y hacían planes para matarlo. 22 Al oír esto, Mardoqueo fue a decírselo a la reina Ester, y ella se lo dijo al rey. 23 El rey mandó investigar el asunto, y cuando se comprobó que era cierto, ordenó que esos dos hombres fueran ahorcados. Todo esto fue anotado, en presencia del rey, en el libro de la historia del país.

5 రాజధాని నగరం షూషనులో బెన్యామీను గోత్రానికి చెందిన మొర్దెకై అనే ఒక యూదుడు వున్నాడు. మొర్దెకై తండ్రి యాయీరు. యాయీరు తండ్రి కీషు. 6 బబులోను రాజైన నెబుకద్నెజరు యూదా రాజైన యెకోన్యాను బందీగా పట్టుకొన్నాడు యెరూషలేము నుంచి చెరపట్టబడినవారిలో మొర్దెకై కూడా ఒకడు. 7 హదస్సా అనే ఒక అమ్మాయి వుంది. ఆమె మొర్దెకైకి పినతండ్రి కూతురు. ఆమె తల్లితండ్రులు మరణించినప్పుడు, మొర్దకై ఆమెని చేరదీసి, తన స్వంత కూతురులా పెంచి పోషించాడు. హదస్సాకి ఎస్తేరు అనే పేరుకూడా వుంది. ఎస్తేరు అందమైన రూపమును సుందర ముఖమును గలదై యుండెను.

17 మహారాజు యువతులందరిలోకీ ఎస్తేరును బాగా ప్రేమించాడు. మిగిలిన కన్యలందరి కంటె ఆమె, ఆయన దయ, అభిమానాలను పొందింది. అందుకని మహారాజు స్వయంగా ఆమె శిరస్సుపై కిరీటం వుంచి, వష్తి స్థానంలో ఆమెను మహారాణిని చేశాడు. 18 మహారాజు ఎస్తేరు గౌరవార్థం తన సామంతులకూ, అధికారులకూ పెద్ద విందు చేశాడు. అన్ని సామంత రాజ్యాల్యోనూ ఆ రోజును ఆయన సెలవు దినంగా ప్రకటించాడు. ఉదారవంతుడైన ఆ మహారాజు జనానికి బహుమతులు పంపాడు.
మొర్దెకై ఒక కుట్రను కనిపెట్టుట
19 రెండవసారి యువతులందరూ ఒకచోట చేర్చబడినప్పుడు మొర్దెకై మహారాజు భవన ద్వారంవద్దనే కూర్చుని వున్నాడు. 20 తను యూదురాలనన్న విషయాన్ని ఎస్తేరు యింకా గుప్తంగానే వుంచింది. తన కుటుంబ గోత్రాలను గురించి ఆమె ఎవ్వరికీ చెప్పలేదు. అది ఆమెకు మొర్దెకై ఇచ్చిన ఆజ్ఞ. తను మొర్దెకై పెంపకంలో ఉన్నప్పటి మాదిరిగానే, యింకా ఆమె అతని ఆజ్ఞలను పాటిస్తోంది.

2 After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2 Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:
3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
4 And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
5 Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
8 So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
10 Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it.
11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.
12 Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)
13 Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.
14 In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.
15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
16 So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18 Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king's gate.
20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.
21 In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.
22 And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name.
23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

Esther Made Queen
2 Later when King Xerxes’ fury had subsided,(A) he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what he had decreed about her. 2 Then the king’s personal attendants proposed, “Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king. 3 Let the king appoint commissioners in every province of his realm to bring all these beautiful young women into the harem at the citadel of Susa. Let them be placed under the care of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and let beauty treatments be given to them. 4 Then let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This advice appealed to the king, and he followed it.
5 Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish,(B) 6 who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin[a](C) king of Judah.(D) 7 Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This young woman, who was also known as Esther,(E) had a lovely figure(F) and was beautiful. Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died.
8 When the king’s order and edict had been proclaimed, many young women were brought to the citadel of Susa(G) and put under the care of Hegai. Esther also was taken to the king’s palace and entrusted to Hegai, who had charge of the harem. 9 She pleased him and won his favor.(H) Immediately he provided her with her beauty treatments and special food.(I) He assigned to her seven female attendants selected from the king’s palace and moved her and her attendants into the best place in the harem.
10 Esther had not revealed her nationality and family background, because Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.(J) 11 Every day he walked back and forth near the courtyard of the harem to find out how Esther was and what was happening to her.
12 Before a young woman’s turn came to go in to King Xerxes, she had to complete twelve months of beauty treatments prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes(K) and cosmetics. 13 And this is how she would go to the king: Anything she wanted was given her to take with her from the harem to the king’s palace. 14 In the evening she would go there and in the morning return to another part of the harem to the care of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch who was in charge of the concubines.(L) She would not return to the king unless he was pleased with her and summoned her by name.(M)
15 When the turn came for Esther (the young woman Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail(N)) to go to the king,(O) she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king’s eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favor(P) of everyone who saw her. 16 She was taken to King Xerxes in the royal residence in the tenth month, the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
17 Now the king was attracted to Esther more than to any of the other women, and she won his favor and approval more than any of the other virgins. So he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen(Q) instead of Vashti. 18 And the king gave a great banquet,(R) Esther’s banquet, for all his nobles and officials.(S) He proclaimed a holiday throughout the provinces and distributed gifts with royal liberality.(T)
Mordecai Uncovers a Conspiracy
19 When the virgins were assembled a second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate.(U) 20 But Esther had kept secret her family background and nationality just as Mordecai had told her to do, for she continued to follow Mordecai’s instructions as she had done when he was bringing her up.(V)
21 During the time Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate, Bigthana[b] and Teresh, two of the king’s officers(W) who guarded the doorway, became angry(X) and conspired to assassinate King Xerxes. 22 But Mordecai found out about the plot and told Queen Esther, who in turn reported it to the king, giving credit to Mordecai. 23 And when the report was investigated and found to be true, the two officials were impaled(Y) on poles. All this was recorded in the book of the annals(Z) in the presence of the king.(AA)
