^9 (A)The king's scribes were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day. And an edict was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to ^(B)the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces ^(C)from India to Ethiopia, ^(D)127 provinces, ^(E)to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language.

²² He sent letters to all the royal provinces, ^(A)to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, that every man be master in his own household and speak according to the language of his people.

The King's Banquets

1 Now in the days of Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus who reigned ^(A)from India to Ethiopia over ^(B)127 provinces,

⁹ So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be ^(A)speaking into the air. ¹⁰ There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, ¹¹ but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be ^(B)a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.

4 ^[a] King Nebuchadnezzar to all ^(A)peoples, nations, and languages, ^(B)that dwell in all the earth: ^(C)Peace be multiplied to you!

^12 (A)Then the king's scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and an edict, according to all that Haman commanded, was written to the king's ^(B)satraps and to the governors over all the provinces and to the officials of all the peoples, ^(C)to every province in its own script and every people in its own language. It was written ^(D)in the name of King Ahasuerus ^(E)and sealed with the king's signet ring. ¹³ Letters were sent ^(F)by couriers to all the king's provinces with instruction ^(G)to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, ^(H)in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, ^(I)and to plunder their goods.

²⁶ Then ^(A)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and ^(B)Shebnah, and Joah, said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in ^(C)Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
