Ezra 9

9 Now when these things were done, the princes came near to me, saying, “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, following their abominations, even those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy offspring have mixed themselves with the peoples of the lands. Yes, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.”
3 When I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled the hair out of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded. 4 Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me because of the trespass of the exiles; and I sat confounded until the evening offering.
5 At the evening offering I rose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn; and I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to Yahweh my God; 6 and I said, “My God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have increased over our head, and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens. 7 Since the days of our fathers we have been exceedingly guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. 8 Now for a little moment grace has been shown from Yahweh our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a stake in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and revive us a little in our bondage. 9 For we are bondservants; yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to revive us, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
10 “Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, 11 which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land to which you go to possess is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness. 12 Now therefore don’t give your daughters to their sons. Don’t take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’
13 “After all that has come on us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant, 14 shall we again break your commandments, and join ourselves with the peoples that do these abominations? Wouldn’t you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there would be no remnant, nor any to escape? 15 Yahweh, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold,[a] we are before you in our guiltiness; for no one can stand before you because of this.”

9 이 모든 일을 마친 다음 이스라엘 백성의 지도자들이 나에게 와서 말하였다. “이스라엘 백성뿐 아니라 제사장들과 레위 사람들까지도 그들 둘레에 사는 다른 백성들과 관계를 끊지 않고 있습니다. 그들은 가나안 사람, 헷 사람, 브리스 사람, 여부스 사람, 암몬 사람, 모압 사람, 이집트 사람, 아모리 사람이 저지르는 혐오스러운 짓들을 그대로 따라 하고 있습니다. 2 이스라엘 백성이 다른 나라 백성의 딸들을 아내로 또는 며느리로 맞아들였습니다. 그리하여 거룩한 피에 그들 둘레의 땅에 살고 있는 다른 나라 백성의 피가 섞여 들고 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성의 관리들과 지도자들이 하나님께 신실하지 못한 이런 일에 앞장서고 있습니다.”
3 나는 이 말을 듣고 내 옷과 두루마기를 찢고, 머리카락과 수염을 잡아 뜯다가 너무 기가 막혀 마침내 주저앉고 말았다. 4 그때에 포로 생활에서 돌아온 사람들이 이렇게 큰 배신행위를 저지른 것을 보고서, 이스라엘의 하나님의 말씀 앞에서 두려워 떠는 사람들이 있었다. 그들은 모두 나의 둘레로 모여들었다. 나는 저녁 제사를 드릴 때까지 넋을 잃은 채 그 자리에 앉아 있었다.
5 나는 저녁 제사 때가 되어서야 부끄러워 주저앉았던 자리에서 일어났다. 그리고 찢어진 옷과 두루마기를 걸친 채 무릎을 꿇고 주 나의 하나님을 향해 두 팔을 들어 올렸다. 6 그리고 이렇게 기도 드렸다.
오, 나의 하나님. 얼굴을 들어 당신을 뵈오려니 너무나 부끄러워 어찌 할 바를 모르겠습니다. 우리의 죄가 우리의 머리보다 더 높이 쌓였습니다. 우리의 잘못이 하늘에까지 닿았습니다. 7 조상 때부터 지금까지 우리가 지은 죄가 너무 큽니다. 우리의 잘못 때문에 우리뿐만 아니라 우리의 왕들과 제사장들까지 벌을 받았습니다. 외국 왕들의 칼에 맞아 죽고, 사로잡혀 가고, 재산을 빼앗기고, 온갖 부끄러운 꼴을 다 당하였습니다. 이런 일은 오늘날에도 마찬가지입니다.
8 그러나 이제 주 우리 하나님께서 잠시나마 우리에게 은혜를 베푸셨습니다. 우리 가운데 얼마를 종살이에서 살아남게 하시고, 주의 거룩한 곳에 다시 뿌리를 내리게 해 주셨습니다. 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 새 희망을 주시고, 종살이 가운데서도 새로운 삶을 맛보게 해 주셨습니다. 9 비록 우리가 종살이를 하고 있으나 우리 하나님이신 당신께서는 우리를 언제까지나 종살이를 하도록 버려두지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 당신의 한결같은 사랑을 페르시아의 왕들 앞에서 보여 주셨습니다. 그리하여 우리는 새로운 삶을 얻고, 우리 하나님의 성전을 다시 짓고, 허물어진 곳을 수리하고, 유다와 예루살렘에서 우리를 보호해 줄 울[a]을 얻을 수 있었습니다.
10 우리 하나님, 이런 은혜를 입고도 당신의 명령을 저버렸으니 이제 우리가 무슨 말씀을 드릴 수 있겠습니까? 11 주께서는 일찍이 그 계명들을 주의 종 예언자들을 통해 우리에게 주시면서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 가서 차지할 땅은 여러 나라 백성의 부정으로 더럽혀진 땅이다. 그들이 역겨운 짓을 하는 바람에 온 땅이 더러워졌다. 이 끝에서 저 끝까지 부정을 타지 않은 곳이 없다. 12 그러니 너희의 딸들을 그들의 아들에게 시집보내지도 말고 그들의 딸들을 너희의 며느리로 맞아들이지도 말아라. 그 땅의 백성이 번영하거나 성공하도록 돕지 말아라. 그렇게 하여야 너희가 강해져서 그 땅에서 나는 좋은 것들을 누릴 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 그 땅을 너희 자손에게 영원한 유산으로 물려줄 수 있을 것이다.”
13 우리가 당한 일은 모두 우리가 저지른 악한 행실과 크나큰 잘못 때문입니다. 우리 하나님이신 당신께서는 우리가 지은 죄에 비하여 가벼운 벌을 내리셨습니다. 그리하여 이만큼이나마 살아남게 하셨습니다. 14 그런데 우리가 다시 당신의 명령을 어기고 이렇게 역겨운 관습을 따르는 백성과 혼인 관계를 맺어서야 되겠습니까? 주께서 우리에게 노하셔서 한 명도 남기지 않고 멸하지 않으시겠습니까? 15 오, 주 이스라엘의 하나님. 당신은 너그러운 분이십니다. 그리하여 오늘 우리를 이렇게 살아남게 하셨습니다. 우리가 지은 죄 때문에 어느 한 사람 당신 앞에 설 수 없는데도, 죄 많은 우리가 이렇게 당신 앞에 있습니다.
