1-5 Här följer Esras släktregister, han som bröt upp från Babylon för att återvända till Jerusalem under den persiske kungen Artasastas regering: Esra var son till Seraja,Seraja var son till Asarja, Asarja var son till Hilkia, Hilkia var son till Sallum, Sallum var son till Sadok, Sadok var son till Ahitub, Ahitub var son till Amarja, Amarja var son till Asarja, Asarja var son till Merajot, Merajot var son till Seraja, Seraja var son till Ussi, Ussi var son till Bucki, Bucki var son till Abisua, Abisua var son till Pinehas, Pinehas var son till Eleasar ochEleasar var son till översteprästen Aron.
6 Som judisk, religiös ledare var Esra mycket hemmastadd i Herrens lag, den som Mose hade gett till Israels folk. Han bad kungen att få återvända till Jerusalem. Kungen beviljade Esras begäran och gav honom allt han önskade, därför att Herren var med honom.
7-9 Mycket folk, däribland präster, leviter, sångare, dörrvaktare och tempelarbetare, följde med honom. De lämnade Babylon på våren i Artasastas sjunde regeringsår och kom fram till Jerusalem på dagen fyra månader senare. Herren hade varit med dem på deras resa.
10 Esra hade bestämt sig för att studera och lyda Herrens lag och att undervisa Israels folk om den.
Brevet från kung Artasasta
11 Detta är det brev som kung Artasasta överlämnade till prästen och läraren Esra:
12 Från Artasasta, kungars kung, till prästen Esra, som undervisar i lagen från himlens Gud.
13 Jag ger härmed mitt tillstånd till varje judisk ättling, även präster och leviter, att återvända till Jerusalem tillsammans med dig.
14 Jag och mitt råd av sju ledamöter befaller dig härmed att föra Guds lag tillbaka till Juda och Jerusalem.
15 Vi ber dig också att du på resan till Jerusalem tar med dig det silver och guld som vi har överlämnat som offer åt Israels Gud.
16 Dessutom ska du samla in silver och guld och frivilliga gåvor till templet från dina landsmän och deras präster i alla Babyloniens landskap.
17 Använd detta till att köpa in tjurar, baggar, lamm, spisoffer och drickoffer, och offra det på altaret i ert tempel i Jerusalem.
18 Det silver och guld som återstår kan du och dina bröder använda på det sätt som ni finner vara Guds vilja.
19 Ta med dig guldskålarna och de andra föremålen, som vi har gett dig, till din Guds tempel i Jerusalem.
20 Om det behövs ytterligare medel till templets återuppbyggnad kan du begära detta från den kungliga skattkammaren.
21 Jag, kung Artasasta, sänder nu denna befallning till alla skattmästare i landskapen väster om floden Eufrat att ge Esra vad han än begär av er, för han är präst och lärare i de lagar som tillhör hans Gud,
22 dock högst 3.700 kilo silver, 10.000 kilo vete, 2.000 liter vin och 2.000 liter olja, men däremot obegränsade mängder av salt.
23 Ge honom också allt annat som himlens Gud kräver för sitt tempel, för varför skulle vi riskera Guds vrede mot kungen och hans söner?
24 Jag befaller också att ingen präst, levit, sångare, dörrvaktare, tempeltjänare eller annan arbetare i templet ska betala skatt av något slag.
25 Och du, Esra, ska använda den visdom Gud har gett dig för att välja ut och tillsätta domare och andra tjänstemän att styra över folket väster om floden Eufrat. Om befolkningen där inte känner till din Guds lagar, så ska du undervisa dem.
26 Om någon vägrar att lyda Guds lag och kungens lag, ska denne omedelbart straffas med antingen döden, förvisning, böter eller fängelse.
Esra tackar Herren
27 Prisa Herren, våra förfäders Gud, som har fått kungen att bidra till att Guds tempel upprättas och äras i Jerusalem!
28 Prisa honom för att han har låtit mig få ingång hos kungen, hans sju rådgivare och alla hans mäktiga furstar! Jag fattade mod, därför att Herren, min Gud, var med mig, och jag övertalade en del av Israels ledare att återvända med mig till Jerusalem.

The Arrival of Ezra
7 Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, 2 the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, 3 the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, 4 the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, 5 the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the high priest— 6 this Ezra went up from Babylon. He was a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, given by the Lord God of Israel. Because the hand of the Lord his God was upon him, the king granted him all his requests. 7 Some of the children of Israel, along with some of the priests, and the Levites, the singers, the porters, and the temple servants, went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.
8 Ezra arrived at Jerusalem in the fifth month, during the king’s seventh year. 9 From the first day of the first month when the journey from Babylon began, until the first day of the fifth month when he arrived at Jerusalem, the good hand of his God was upon him. 10 Because Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, he was doing so and teaching the statutes and judgments in Israel.
The Letter of Artaxerxes to Ezra
11 Now this is the copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, who was likewise the scribe, the one responsible for the words of the commandments of the Lord and His statutes to Israel:
12 “Artaxerxes, king of kings,
“To Ezra the priest, scribe of the law of the God of heaven:
“Perfect peace, and so forth.
13 “I have issued a decree that all the people of Israel, and their priests, and the Levites in my realm, who are inclined to go up to Jerusalem, may go with you. 14 For you are sent by the king and his seven counselors to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem in accordance with the Law of your God which is in your hand, 15 and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem, 16 along with all the silver and gold that you can find in all the province of Babylon, plus the freewill offering of the people and priests, who are voluntarily giving for the house of their God in Jerusalem. 17 Diligently use this money to buy bulls, rams, lambs, with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them on the altar of the house of your God in Jerusalem.
18 “Whatever seems good to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, do that according to the will of your God. 19 The vessels also that are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver before the God of Jerusalem. 20 And whatever else is needed for the house of your God and is your responsibility to provide, use the king’s treasury to pay for it.
21 “I, even I Artaxerxes the king, issue a decree to all the treasurers of the province Beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, scribe of the law of the God of heaven, should request from you, you should do it with all diligence— 22 as much as a hundred talents[a] of silver, a hundred measures[b] of wheat, a hundred baths[c] of wine, a hundred baths[d] of oil, and salt (without prescribing how much). 23 Whatever is decreed by the God of heaven, let it be zealously done for the house of the God of heaven so as to avoid there being wrath against the realm of the king and his sons. 24 Also we are informing you that with regard to all the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God, it is not permitted to impose toll, tribute, or custom on them.
25 “You, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God who empowers you, appoint magistrates and judges to judge all the people of the province Beyond the River, all those who know the laws of your God and those who do not, whom you must teach. 26 Whoever will not observe the law of your God or the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily on him, whether that be death, banishment, confiscation of goods, or imprisonment.”
27 Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, 28 and has extended mercy to me before the king, his counselors, and all the king’s mighty princes. Thus I had been strengthened, because the hand of the Lord my God was upon me. As a result, I gathered together some of the chief men of Israel to go up with me.
