I primogeniti e gli azzimi
13 Il Signore disse a Mosè: 2 «Consacrami ogni primogenito, il primo parto di ogni madre tra gli Israeliti - di uomini o di animali -: esso appartiene a me».
3 Mosè disse al popolo: «Ricordati di questo giorno, nel quale siete usciti dall'Egitto, dalla condizione servile, perché con mano potente il Signore vi ha fatti uscire di là: non si mangi ciò che è lievitato. 4 Oggi voi uscite nel mese di Abib. 5 Quando il Signore ti avrà fatto entrare nel paese del Cananeo, dell'Hittita, dell'Amorreo, dell'Eveo e del Gebuseo, che ha giurato ai tuoi padri di dare a te, terra dove scorre latte e miele, allora tu compirai questo rito in questo mese.
6 Per sette giorni mangerai azzimi.
Nel settimo vi sarà una festa in onore del Signore.
7 Nei sette giorni si mangeranno azzimi e non ci sarà presso di te ciò che è lievitato; non ci sarà presso di te il lievito, entro tutti i tuoi confini.
8 In quel giorno tu istruirai tuo figlio: E' a causa di quanto ha fatto il Signore per me, quando sono uscito dall'Egitto.
9 Sarà per te segno sulla tua mano e ricordo fra i tuoi occhi, perché la legge del Signore sia sulla tua bocca. Con mano potente infatti il Signore ti ha fatto uscire dall'Egitto. 10 Osserverai questo rito alla sua ricorrenza ogni anno.
Ancora i primogeniti
11 Quando il Signore ti avrà fatto entrare nel paese del Cananeo, come ha giurato a te e ai tuoi padri, e te lo avrà dato in possesso, 12 tu riserverai per il Signore ogni primogenito del seno materno; ogni primo parto del bestiame, se di sesso maschile, appartiene al Signore. 13 Riscatterai ogni primo parto dell'asino mediante un capo di bestiame minuto; se non lo riscatti, gli spaccherai la nuca. Riscatterai ogni primogenito dell'uomo tra i tuoi figli. 14 Quando tuo figlio domani ti chiederà: Che significa ciò?, tu gli risponderai: Con braccio potente il Signore ci ha fatti uscire dall'Egitto, dalla condizione servile. 15 Poiché il faraone si ostinava a non lasciarci partire, il Signore ha ucciso ogni primogenito nel paese d'Egitto, i primogeniti degli uomini e i primogeniti del bestiame. Per questo io sacrifico al Signore ogni primo frutto del seno materno, se di sesso maschile, e riscatto ogni primogenito dei miei figli. 16 Questo sarà un segno sulla tua mano, sarà un ornamento fra i tuoi occhi, per ricordare che con braccio potente il Signore ci ha fatti uscire dall'Egitto».
4. L'USCITA DALL'EGITTO
Partenza degli Israeliti
17 Quando il faraone lasciò partire il popolo, Dio non lo condusse per la strada del paese dei Filistei, benché fosse più corta, perché Dio pensava: «Altrimenti il popolo, vedendo imminente la guerra, potrebbe pentirsi e tornare in Egitto». 18 Dio guidò il popolo per la strada del deserto verso il Mare Rosso. Gli Israeliti, ben armati uscivano dal paese d'Egitto. 19 Mosè prese con sé le ossa di Giuseppe, perché questi aveva fatto giurare solennemente gli Israeliti: «Dio, certo, verrà a visitarvi; voi allora vi porterete via le mie ossa». 20 Partirono da Succot e si accamparono a Etam, sul limite del deserto. 21 Il Signore marciava alla loro testa di giorno con una colonna di nube, per guidarli sulla via da percorrere, e di notte con una colonna di fuoco per far loro luce, così che potessero viaggiare giorno e notte. 22 Di giorno la colonna di nube non si ritirava mai dalla vista del popolo, né la colonna di fuoco durante la notte.

Consacrazione dei primogeniti al Signore
13 (A)Il Signore disse a Mosè: 2 «Consacrami ogni primogenito[a] tra i figli d’Israele, ogni primo parto, sia tra gli uomini, sia tra gli animali: esso appartiene a me».
3 Mosè disse al popolo: «Ricordate questo giorno, nel quale siete usciti dall’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù; perché il Signore vi ha fatti uscire di là, con mano potente; non si mangi pane lievitato. 4 Voi uscite oggi, nel mese di Abib[b]. 5 Quando il Signore ti avrà fatto entrare nel paese dei Cananei, degli Ittiti, degli Amorei, degli Ivvei e dei Gebusei, che giurò ai tuoi padri di darti, paese dove scorre il latte e il miele, compi questo rito in questo mese. 6 Per sette giorni mangia pane azzimo; il settimo giorno sarà una festa al Signore. 7 Si mangi pane azzimo per sette giorni e non si veda pane lievitato presso di te, né si veda lievito presso di te, in tutto il tuo territorio. 8 In quel giorno tu spiegherai questo a tuo figlio, dicendo: “Si fa così a motivo di quello che il Signore fece per me quando uscii dall’Egitto”. 9 Ciò sarà per te come un segno sulla tua mano, come un ricordo fra i tuoi occhi, affinché la legge del Signore sia nella tua bocca; poiché il Signore ti ha fatto uscire dall’Egitto con mano potente. 10 Osserva dunque questo decreto, al tempo fissato, di anno in anno.
11 Quando il Signore ti avrà fatto entrare nel paese dei Cananei, come giurò a te e ai tuoi padri, e te lo avrà dato, 12 consacra al Signore ogni primogenito e ogni primo parto del tuo bestiame. I maschi saranno del Signore. 13 Ma riscatta ogni primo parto dell’asino con un agnello; se non lo vuoi riscattare, spezzagli il collo. Riscatta anche ogni primogenito di uomo fra i tuoi figli. 14 Quando, in avvenire, tuo figlio ti interrogherà, dicendo: “Che significa questo?”, tu gli risponderai: “Il Signore ci fece uscire dall’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù, con mano potente; 15 e quando il faraone si ostinò a non lasciarci andare, il Signore uccise tutti i primogeniti nel paese d’Egitto, tanto i primogeniti degli uomini quanto i primogeniti degli animali. Perciò io sacrifico al Signore ogni primo parto maschio, ma riscatto ogni primogenito dei miei figli”. 16 Ciò sarà come un segno sulla tua mano e come un ricordo fra i tuoi occhi, poiché il Signore ci ha fatti uscire dall’Egitto con mano potente».

17 (B)Quando il faraone ebbe lasciato andare il popolo, Dio non lo condusse per la via del paese dei Filistei, benché fosse vicina, poiché Dio disse: «Bisogna evitare che il popolo, di fronte a una guerra, si penta e torni in Egitto». 18 Dio fece fare al popolo un giro per la via del deserto, verso il mar Rosso. I figli d’Israele partirono armati dal paese d’Egitto. 19 Mosè prese con sé le ossa di Giuseppe; perché questi aveva espressamente fatto giurare i figli d’Israele, dicendo: «Dio certamente vi visiterà; allora, porterete con voi le mie ossa da qui».
20 Gli Israeliti, partiti da Succot, si accamparono a Etam, all’estremità del deserto. 21 Il Signore andava davanti a loro: di giorno, in una colonna di nuvola per guidarli lungo il cammino; di notte, in una colonna di fuoco per illuminarli, perché potessero camminare giorno e notte. 22 Egli non allontanava la colonna di nuvola durante il giorno, né la colonna di fuoco durante la notte, dal cospetto del popolo.

13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “(A)Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the firstborn of every womb among the sons of Israel, among people and animals alike; it belongs to Me.”
3 And Moses said to the people, “(B)Remember this day in which you departed from Egypt, from the house of [a]slavery; for (C)by [b]a powerful hand the Lord brought you out from this place. (D)And nothing with yeast shall be eaten. 4 On this day in the (E)month of Abib, you are about to go out from here. 5 And it shall be when the Lord (F)brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which (G)He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, (H)that you shall [c]perform this rite in this month. 6 For (I)seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and (J)nothing with yeast shall [d]be seen among you, nor shall any dough with yeast [e]be seen among you in all your borders. 8 And (K)you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And (L)it shall [f]serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder [g]on your forehead, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth; for with (M)a powerful hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt. 10 Therefore, you shall (N)keep this ordinance at its appointed time from [h]year to year.
11 “Now when (O)the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as (P)He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 (Q)you shall [i]devote to the Lord every firstborn of a womb, and every firstborn offspring of an animal that you own; the males belong to the Lord. 13 But (R)every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and (S)every [j]firstborn among your sons you shall redeem. 14 (T)And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘(U)With [k]a powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of [l]slavery. 15 And it came about, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the (V)Lord put to death every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from human firstborns to animal firstborns. Therefore, I sacrifice to the Lord the males, every firstborn of a womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So (W)it shall [m]serve as a sign on your hand and as [n]phylacteries [o]on your forehead, for with [p]a powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

17 Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “(X)The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Therefore God led the people around by way of the wilderness to the [q]Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up (Y)in battle formation from the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took (Z)the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will certainly [r]take care of you, and you shall carry my bones from here with you.” 20 Then they set out from (AA)Succoth and camped in Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. 21 And (AB)the Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they might [s]travel by day and by night. 22 [t]He (AC)did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from the presence of the people.
