A oração de Esdras devido aos casamentos mistos

A dado momento, os chefes judeus vieram dizer-me que muitos de entre o povo, e até alguns sacerdotes e levitas, tinham seguido costumes extremamente reprováveis dos povos pagãos: cananeus, hititas, perizeus, jebuseus, amonitas, moabitas, egípcios e amorreus. Homens de Israel tinham casado com raparigas desses povos pagãos e tinham levado os seus filhos a celebrar casamentos semelhantes. Dessa maneira, o povo santo de Deus estava a misturar-se com essas pessoas; os chefes políticos eram dos piores nesse tipo de transgressão.

Quando ouvi isto, rasguei a minha roupa, coloquei as mãos na cabeça, arrepelei o cabelo e a barba e caí numa cadeira em profundo desalento. Muitos dos que temiam o Deus de Israel, na sequência deste pecado do povo, vieram sentar-se ao meu lado, até à hora do sacrifício da tarde.

Por fim, levantei-me, profundamente perturbado, pus-me de joelhos perante o Senhor, levantei as mãos ao meu Deus e clamei:

“Ó meu Deus, estou extremamente confuso e envergonhado, ao levantar o meu rosto para ti; porque os nossos pecados se acumulam, bem acima das nossas cabeças, e a nossa culpa sobe até aos céus. Toda a nossa história traz a marca do pecado; por essa razão, os nossos reis e os nossos sacerdotes foram mortos por reis pagãos; fomos feitos cativos, fomos roubados e desgraçados, tal como ainda hoje acontece.

Ultimamente, tinha-nos sido dado um momento de descanso; porque permitiste que alguns de nós regressassem a Jerusalém do cativeiro; deste-nos, Senhor, nosso Deus, um momento de alegria e uma vida nova, no meio da escravatura. Pois éramos escravos; mas no teu amor e misericórdia, não nos abandonaste nessa situação; antes, fizeste com que os reis persas nos fossem favoráveis, ao ponto de até nos darem ajuda na reconstrução do templo de Deus e na edificação de muralhas de segurança de Jerusalém, para poder tornar-se uma parede defensiva em toda a Judá.

10 Agora, ó Deus, o que poderemos nós dizer, depois do que está a acontecer? Mais uma vez transgredimos as tuas leis e abandonámos-te! 11 Os profetas avisaram-nos que a terra que iríamos possuir estava totalmente corrompida pelas práticas abomináveis dos povos que aqui viviam, que a terra estava manchada de corrupção. 12 Por esse motivo, disseste-nos para não deixarmos as nossas filhas casarem com os filhos deles, nem os nossos filhos casarem com as filhas deles, e que nem sequer os ajudássemos fosse de que maneira fosse. Disseste-nos que só seguindo este princípio nos tornaríamos numa nação próspera e legaríamos aos nossos filhos uma prosperidade perene.

13 E agora, mesmo depois do castigo no exílio, por causa da nossa maldade (e fomos punidos muito menos do que aquilo que merecíamos), mesmo tendo deixado que alguns de nós regressassem, 14 desobedecemos novamente aos teus mandamentos, e permitimos casamentos com gente que pratica coisas abomináveis. Certamente que a tua ira nos destruirá ao ponto de nem este remanescente escapar. 15 Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, tu és um Deus justo; que esperança poderemos ter, se quiseres exercer a tua justiça sobre nós, que estamos aqui diante de ti?”

Ezra’s Prayer About Intermarriage

After these things had been done, the leaders came to me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate(A) from the neighboring peoples with their detestable practices, like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites,(B) Ammonites,(C) Moabites,(D) Egyptians and Amorites.(E) They have taken some of their daughters(F) as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled(G) the holy race(H) with the peoples around them. And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness.”(I)

When I heard this, I tore(J) my tunic and cloak, pulled hair from my head and beard and sat down appalled.(K) Then everyone who trembled(L) at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of this unfaithfulness of the exiles. And I sat there appalled(M) until the evening sacrifice.

Then, at the evening sacrifice,(N) I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands(O) spread out to the Lord my God and prayed:

“I am too ashamed(P) and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.(Q) From the days of our ancestors(R) until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword(S) and captivity,(T) to pillage and humiliation(U) at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today.

“But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious(V) in leaving us a remnant(W) and giving us a firm place[a](X) in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes(Y) and a little relief in our bondage. Though we are slaves,(Z) our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness(AA) in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(AB) and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.

10 “But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commands(AC) 11 you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: ‘The land you are entering(AD) to possess is a land polluted(AE) by the corruption of its peoples. By their detestable practices(AF) they have filled it with their impurity from one end to the other. 12 Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them(AG) at any time, that you may be strong(AH) and eat the good things(AI) of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’(AJ)

13 “What has happened to us is a result of our evil(AK) deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins deserved(AL) and have given us a remnant like this. 14 Shall we then break your commands again and intermarry(AM) with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us,(AN) leaving us no remnant(AO) or survivor? 15 Lord, the God of Israel, you are righteous!(AP) We are left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it not one of us can stand(AQ) in your presence.(AR)

The Sin of Intermarriage

Now when these things had been completed, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, who live according to their detestable practices—the practices of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites. They have taken wives from their daughters for themselves and for their sons. They have thereby mixed the holy seed with the peoples of the lands, and the leaders and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”

Then when I heard about this situation, I tore my clothing and my robe, and I pulled out some of the hair on my head and my beard and sat down appalled. Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles, was gathered around me as I sat appalled until the evening sacrifice. At the time of the evening sacrifice, I arose from my self-humiliation, and with my clothing and my robe torn, I got down on my knees and stretched out my hands to the Lord my God.

Ezra’s Prayer

I said:

My God, I am ashamed and too embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God, because our sinful deeds[a] have risen above our heads, and our guilt is so great that it reaches to the heavens. From the days of our ancestors until today, we have been extremely guilty. Because of our sinful deeds, we, our kings, and our priests have been turned over to the kings of the lands—by sword, by captivity, by plunder, and today by humiliation.

Now, for a short time, mercy has been shown to us from the Lord our God, in order to leave us a remnant that has escaped and to give us a stake in his Holy Place, so that our God may give light to our eyes and give us a little relief in our slavery, because we are slaves. However, even in our slavery our God has not abandoned us but has extended favor to us before the kings of Persia in order to give us relief, to raise up the house of our God and to restore its ruins, and to give us a protective wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

10 Now, what can we say after this, our God? For we have forsaken your commandments, 11 which you commanded through your servants the prophets when you said, “The land which you are entering to possess is a land polluted with the filth of the peoples of the lands and with their detestable practices that fill it from end to end with their impurity. 12 So now, do not give your daughters to their sons, and do not take their daughters as wives for your sons. Never seek their welfare or their prosperity, so that you may be strong and may eat the good things of the land and leave it as an inheritance for your children forever.”

13 After everything that has come upon us because of our evil acts and our extreme guilt, nevertheless you, our God, have punished us less than we deserved and have given us a remnant that has escaped like this. 14 Should we break your commandments again by intermarrying with the peoples who commit these detestable practices? Wouldn’t you remain angry with us until you completely destroyed us and left us without a survivor or a remnant that has escaped?

15 Lord, God of Israel, it is because you are righteous that we are left with a remnant today. Here we are before you in our guilt, but no one can stand before you because of this.
