8 São estes os nomes e as genealogias dos chefes que me acompanharam, desde Babilónia, durante o reinado do rei Artaxerxes:

O retorno a Jerusalém
15 Juntámo-nos na margem do rio Aava e ficámos ali acampados três dias, enquanto eu verificava as listas do povo e dos sacerdotes que iam chegando. Verifiquei que não havia nem um só levita que se tivesse apresentado voluntariamente. 16 Então, mandei chamar Eliezer, Ariel, Semaías, Elnatã, Jaribe, Elnatã, Natã, Zacarias e Mesulão, líderes levitas; também mandei buscar Joiaribe e Elnatã, que eram sábios. 17 Enviei-os depois a Ido, líder dos judeus em Casifia, para lhe pedir, a ele, aos seus irmãos e aos funcionários do templo, que nos mandassem sacerdotes para o templo de Deus em Jerusalém. 18 E Deus foi bom para connosco! Mandou-nos um homem notável chamado Serebias e os seus 18 filhos e irmãos; uma pessoa muito inteligente, descendente de Mali, filho de Levi e neto de Israel. 19 Deus também fez com que se apresentassem Hasabias e Jesaías, filho de Merari, com 20 dos seus familiares, filhos e irmãos. 20 Vieram também 220 funcionários do templo. Estes funcionários eram assistentes dos levitas, uma categoria instituída pelo rei David. Todos estes 220 homens foram devidamente registados pelos seus nomes.
21 Enquanto ali estávamos, à beira do rio Aava, proclamei um jejum, para nos humilharmos perante Deus; orámos para que nos desse uma boa viagem e nos protegesse, a nós, assim como aos nossos filhos e bagagens, durante a viagem. 22 Porque me envergonhei de pedir ao rei soldados, a pé e a cavalo, para nos acompanharem e nos protegerem dos inimigos durante o caminho; pois tínhamos dito que o nosso Deus protege todos quantos o adoram e a desgraça só vem aos que o abandonam. 23 Por isso, jejuámos e implorámos a Deus que cuidasse de nós, e ele assim fez.
24 Designei 12 chefes de entre os sacerdotes, Serebias, Hasabias e 10 outros sacerdotes; 25 deveriam responsabilizar-se pelo transporte da prata e do ouro, dos recipientes em ouro e dos outros objetos que o rei e o seu conselho, e os líderes do povo de Israel, tinham oferecido para o templo de Deus. 26 Pesei o dinheiro, quando lho entreguei, e contei no total 22 quilos de prata; avaliei também em 3,4 toneladas os vasos de prata e em outro tanto os de ouro. 27 Havia também 20 taças de ouro que pesavam 8 quilos; entreguei-lhes, igualmente, 2 belas taças de bronze que eram tão preciosas com as de ouro.
28 Depois disse-lhes: “Vocês estão consagrados ao Senhor; tal como vocês, também consagrei os tesouros: o equipamento, o dinheiro e as taças que foram oferecidas voluntariamente ao Senhor, o Deus dos vossos pais. 29 Assim, vigiem bem estes tesouros! Terão de os apresentar, sem a mínima perda, aos sacerdotes e aos chefes dos levitas, assim como aos anciãos de Israel em Jerusalém, onde deverão ser colocados nas salas do tesouro do templo do Senhor.” 30 Os sacerdotes e os levitas aceitaram a responsabilidade daquele transporte até ao templo de Deus em Jerusalém.
31 Levantámos o acampamento junto ao rio Aava no dia 12 do primeiro mês e partimos para Jerusalém. Deus protegeu-nos e livrou-nos dos inimigos e dos bandidos durante todo o caminho. 32 Assim, chegamos sãos e salvos a Jerusalém e permanecemos ali três dias.
33 No quarto dia, após a chegada, todo o ouro e prata e os outros valores foram pesados no templo, por Meremote, filho de Urias o sacerdote, por Eleazar, filho de Fineias, por Jozabade, filho de Jesua, e por Noadias, filho de Binuí, todos eles levitas. 34 Foi tudo contado e anotado o peso do ouro e da prata.
35 Depois disso, os que tinham regressado do cativeiro, ofereceram holocaustos ao Deus de Israel: 12 novilhos por toda a nação de Israel, 96 carneiros, 77 cordeiros e 12 bodes como oferta pelo pecado. Todos estes animais foram queimados em holocausto ao Senhor. 36 Os decretos reais foram entregues aos seus representantes e aos governadores de todas as províncias a ocidente do rio Eufrates, os quais colaboraram, eles próprios, nos trabalhos de reconstrução do templo de Deus.

8 Estes, pois, são os chefes de seus pais, com as suas genealogias, os que subiram comigo de Babilônia no reinado do rei Artaxerxes: 2 dos filhos de Fineias, Gérson; dos filhos de Itamar, Daniel; dos filhos de Davi, Hatus; 3 dos filhos de Secanias e dos filhos de Parós, Zacarias, e com ele por genealogias se contaram até cento e cinquenta homens; 4 dos filhos de Paate-Moabe, Elioenai, filho de Zeraías, e, com ele, duzentos homens; 5 dos filhos de Secanias, o filho de Jaaziel, e, com ele, trezentos homens; 6 e dos filhos de Adim, Ebede, filho de Jônatas, e, com ele, cinquenta homens; 7 e dos filhos de Elão, Jesaías, filho de Atalias, e, com ele, setenta homens; 8 e dos filhos de Sefatias, Zebadias, filho de Micael, e, com ele, oitenta homens; 9 dos filhos de Joabe, Obadias, filho de Jeiel, e, com ele, duzentos e dezoito homens; 10 e dos filhos de Selomite, o filho de Josifias, e, com ele, cento e sessenta homens; 11 e dos filhos de Bebai, Zacarias, o filho de Bebai, e, com ele, vinte e oito homens; 12 e dos filhos de Azgade, Joanã, o filho de Hacatã, e, com ele, cento e dez homens; 13 e dos últimos filhos de Adonicão, seus nomes eram estes: Elifelete, Jeiel e Semaías, e, com eles, sessenta homens; 14 e dos filhos de Bigvai, Utai e Zabude, e, com eles, setenta homens.
15 E ajuntei-os perto do rio que vai a Aava, e ficamos ali acampados três dias; então, atentei para o povo e para os sacerdotes e não achei ali nenhum dos filhos de Levi. 16 Enviei, pois, Eliézer, Ariel, Semaías, Elnatã, Jaribe, Elnatã, Natã, Zacarias e Mesulão, os chefes, como também a Joiaribe e a Elnatã, que eram sábios. 17 E dei-lhes mandado para Ido, chefe no lugar de Casifia, e lhes pus palavras na boca para dizerem a Ido, seu irmão, e aos netineus, no lugar de Casifia, que nos trouxessem ministros para a Casa do nosso Deus. 18 E trouxeram-nos, segundo a boa mão de Deus sobre nós, um homem sábio, dos filhos de Mali, filho de Levi, filho de Israel, a saber, Serebias, com os seus filhos e irmãos, dezoito; 19 e a Hasabias e com ele Jesaías, dos filhos de Merari, com seus irmãos e os filhos deles, vinte; 20 e dos netineus, que Davi e os príncipes deram para o ministério dos levitas, duzentos e vinte netineus, que todos foram expressos por seus nomes.
21 Então, apregoei ali um jejum junto ao rio Aava, para nos humilharmos diante da face de nosso Deus, para lhe pedirmos caminho direito para nós, e para nossos filhos, e para toda a nossa fazenda. 22 Porque me envergonhei de pedir ao rei exército e cavaleiros para nos defenderem do inimigo no caminho, porquanto tínhamos falado ao rei, dizendo: A mão do nosso Deus é sobre todos os que o buscam para o bem, mas a sua força e a sua ira, sobre todos os que o deixam. 23 Nós, pois, jejuamos e pedimos isso ao nosso Deus, e moveu-se pelas nossas orações.
24 Então, separei doze dos maiorais dos sacerdotes: Serebias, Hasabias e com eles dez dos seus irmãos. 25 E pesei-lhes a prata, e o ouro, e os utensílios, que eram a oferta para a Casa de nosso Deus, a qual ofereceram o rei, e os seus conselheiros, e os seus príncipes, e todo o Israel que ali se achou. 26 E pesei em suas mãos seiscentos e cinquenta talentos de prata, e em objetos de prata cem talentos, e cem talentos de ouro. 27 E vinte taças de ouro de mil daricos e dois vasos de bom metal lustroso, tão desejável como ouro. 28 E disse-lhes: Consagrados sois do Senhor, e sagrados são estes vasos, como também esta prata e este ouro, oferta voluntária, oferecida ao Senhor, Deus de vossos pais. 29 Vigiai, pois, e guardai-os até que os peseis na presença dos maiorais dos sacerdotes, e dos levitas, e dos príncipes dos pais de Israel, em Jerusalém, nas câmaras da Casa do Senhor. 30 Então, receberam os sacerdotes e os levitas o peso da prata, e do ouro, e dos vasos, para trazerem a Jerusalém, à Casa de nosso Deus.
31 E partimos do rio de Aava, no dia doze do primeiro mês, para irmos para Jerusalém; e a boa mão do nosso Deus estava sobre nós e livrou-nos da mão dos inimigos e dos que nos armavam ciladas no caminho. 32 E viemos a Jerusalém e repousamos ali três dias. 33 E no dia quatro se pesou a prata, e o ouro, e os vasos, na Casa do nosso Deus, por mão de Meremote, filho do sacerdote Urias; e com ele estava Eleazar, filho de Fineias, e com eles, Jozabade, filho de Jesua, e Noadias, filho de Binui, levitas; 34 conforme o número e conforme o peso de tudo aquilo; e todo o peso se descreveu no mesmo tempo.
35 E os transportados que vieram do cativeiro ofereceram holocaustos ao Deus de Israel: doze novilhos por todo o Israel, noventa e seis carneiros, setenta e sete cordeiros e doze bodes em sacrifício pelo pecado; tudo em holocausto ao Senhor. 36 Então, deram as ordens do rei aos sátrapas do rei e aos governadores de aquém do rio; e ajudaram o povo e a Casa de Deus.

8 Esta é a lista dos chefes de grupos de famílias que estavam na Babilônia e que voltaram com Esdras para Jerusalém quando Artaxerxes era rei:
2-14 Gérson, da família de Fineias; Daniel, da família de Itamar; Hatus, filho de Secanias, da família de Davi;
Zacarias, da família de Parós, com cento e cinquenta homens do seu grupo de famílias (havia registro das suas famílias);
Elioenai, filho de Zeraías, da família de Paate-Moabe, com duzentos homens;
Secanias, filho de Jaziel, da família de Zatu, com trezentos homens;
Ebede, filho de Jônatas, da família de Adim, com cinquenta homens;
Jesaías, filho de Atalias, da família de Elão, com setenta homens;
Zebadias, filho de Micael, da família de Sefatias, com oitenta homens;
Obadias, filho de Jeiel, da família de Joabe, com duzentos e dezoito homens;
Selomite, filho de Josifias, da família de Bani, com cento e sessenta homens;
Zacarias, filho de Bebai, da família de Bebai, com vinte e oito homens;
Joanã, filho de Hacatã, da família de Azgade, com cento e dez homens;
Elifelete, Jeiel e Semaías, da família de Adonicã, com sessenta homens. Eles foram os últimos a chegar;
Utai e Zabude, da família de Bigvai, com setenta homens.
Esdras manda buscar levitas
15 Eu, Esdras, reuni toda essa gente perto do rio que corre para a cidade de Aava, e ficamos acampados ali três dias. Quando examinei o povo com mais cuidado, vi que no meio deles havia sacerdotes, porém não havia nenhum levita. 16 Aí mandei chamar nove líderes: Eliézer, Ariel, Semaías, Elnatã, Jaribe, Elnatã, Natã, Zacarias e Mesulã. E chamei também dois professores: Joiaribe e Elnatã. 17 Eu mandei que eles fossem procurar Ido, o chefe do lugar chamado Casifia, e dissessem a ele e aos seus colegas servidores do Templo que nos mandassem gente para servir a Deus no Templo. 18 E, porque Deus estava nos abençoando, eles nos mandaram um homem muito capaz, chamado Serebias, levita da família de Mali. Dezoito dos seus filhos e irmãos vieram com ele. 19 Eles também mandaram Hasabias e Jesaías, da família de Merari, com vinte dos seus filhos e irmãos. 20 Vieram também duzentos e vinte servidores do Templo, os quais eram descendentes daqueles que o rei Davi e os seus oficiais haviam escolhido para ajudar os levitas. E fizeram uma lista com os nomes de todos eles.
O povo jejua e ora
21 Então, ali perto do rio Aava, dei ordem para que houvesse um dia de jejum. Todos nós deveríamos nos ajoelhar diante do nosso Deus e lhe pedir que nos dirigisse na nossa viagem e nos protegesse, os nossos filhos e tudo o que era nosso. 22 Eu tinha dito ao rei que o nosso Deus protege todos os que confiam nele, porém que a sua força e a sua ira vão contra aqueles que o abandonam. Por isso, fiquei com vergonha de pedir ao rei uma tropa de soldados da cavalaria para nos defender dos nossos inimigos durante a viagem. 23 Assim nós jejuamos e oramos, pedindo a Deus que nos protegesse, e ele atendeu as nossas orações.
A entrega das ofertas
24 Dos chefes dos sacerdotes, eu escolhi Serebias, Hasabias e outros dez. 25 Então pesei a prata, o ouro e os objetos que o rei, os seus conselheiros e funcionários e o povo de Israel haviam dado para serem usados no Templo. E entreguei tudo a esses sacerdotes. 26-27 O que eu entreguei foi o seguinte: vinte e dois mil quilos de prata; cem objetos de prata, pesando setenta quilos; três mil e quinhentos quilos de ouro; vinte taças de ouro, pesando oito quilos e meio; dois objetos de fino bronze, preciosos como ouro.
28 Então eu lhes disse:
— Vocês estão separados para servir o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados. E também estão separados para o Senhor todos estes objetos de prata e de ouro trazidos a ele como ofertas feitas por vontade própria. 29 Tomem bem conta deles até que vocês cheguem ao Templo. Ali, nas salas do Templo do Senhor, vocês pesarão e entregarão tudo aos chefes dos sacerdotes e dos levitas e aos líderes do povo de Israel em Jerusalém.
30 Então os sacerdotes e os levitas receberam a prata, o ouro e os objetos a fim de os levar para o Templo de Jerusalém.
A volta para Jerusalém
31 No dia doze do primeiro mês, nós saímos do rio Aava a fim de ir para Jerusalém. O nosso Deus esteve conosco durante a viagem e nos protegeu dos ataques dos inimigos e dos bandidos. 32 Quando chegamos a Jerusalém, descansamos três dias. 33 E então, no quarto dia, fomos ao Templo e pesamos a prata, o ouro e os objetos. E os entregamos ao sacerdote Meremote, filho de Urias. Com ele estavam Eleazar, filho de Fineias, e dois levitas: Jozabade, filho de Jesua, e Noadias, filho de Binui. 34 A prata, o ouro e os objetos foram contados e pesados, e o peso foi anotado.
35 Depois todos os que voltaram da Babilônia entregaram animais para serem completamente queimados como sacrifícios ao Deus de Israel. Eles ofereceram doze touros em favor do povo de Israel, noventa e seis carneiros, setenta e sete carneirinhos e, para purificar o povo dos pecados, doze bodes. Todos esses animais foram completamente queimados como sacrifícios a Deus, o Senhor.
36 Depois entregaram a ordem do rei às autoridades do reino e aos governadores da província do Eufrates-Oeste, e estes ajudaram o povo e o culto no Templo de Deus.

8 These are the family heads and those registered with them who came up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes:(A)
2 of the descendants of Phinehas, Gershom;
of the descendants of Ithamar, Daniel;
of the descendants of David, Hattush 3 of the descendants of Shekaniah;(B)
of the descendants of Parosh,(C) Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men;
4 of the descendants of Pahath-Moab,(D) Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men;
5 of the descendants of Zattu,[a] Shekaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;
6 of the descendants of Adin,(E) Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;
7 of the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men;
8 of the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;
9 of the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;
10 of the descendants of Bani,[b] Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;
11 of the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men;
12 of the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men;
13 of the descendants of Adonikam,(F) the last ones, whose names were Eliphelet, Jeuel and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;
14 of the descendants of Bigvai, Uthai and Zakkur, and with them 70 men.
The Return to Jerusalem
15 I assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava,(G) and we camped there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites(H) there. 16 So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning, 17 and I ordered them to go to Iddo, the leader in Kasiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his fellow Levites, the temple servants(I) in Kasiphia, so that they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God. 18 Because the gracious hand of our God was on us,(J) they brought us Sherebiah,(K) a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah’s sons and brothers, 18 in all; 19 and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and nephews, 20 in all. 20 They also brought 220 of the temple servants(L)—a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name.
21 There, by the Ahava Canal,(M) I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey(N) for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers(O) and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone(P) who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.(Q)” 23 So we fasted(R) and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.
24 Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah,(S) Hashabiah and ten of their brothers, 25 and I weighed out(T) to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his advisers, his officials and all Israel present there had donated for the house of our God. 26 I weighed out to them 650 talents[c] of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents,[d] 100 talents[e] of gold, 27 20 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics,[f] and two fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold.
28 I said to them, “You as well as these articles are consecrated to the Lord.(U) The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your ancestors. 29 Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel.” 30 Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.
31 On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal(V) to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us,(W) and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way. 32 So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.(X)
33 On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out(Y) the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth(Z) son of Uriah, the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad(AA) son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.(AB) 34 Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time.
35 Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls(AC) for all Israel,(AD) ninety-six rams, seventy-seven male lambs and, as a sin offering,[g] twelve male goats.(AE) All this was a burnt offering to the Lord. 36 They also delivered the king’s orders(AF) to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates,(AG) who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God.(AH)

18 And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;
19 And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty;
20 Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.
21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.
22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.
23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.
24 Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,
25 And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered:
26 I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents;
27 Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold.
28 And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the Lord; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the Lord God of your fathers.
29 Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord.
30 So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.
31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
32 And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.
33 Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;
34 By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time.
35 Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the Lord.
36 And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.
