Llegada de Esdras a Jerusalén
7 Después de estas cosas, en el reinado de Artajerjes, rey de Persia(A), subió Esdras hijo de Seraías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Hilcías(B), 2 hijo de Salum, hijo de Sadoc, hijo de Ahitob, 3 hijo de Amarías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Meraiot, 4 hijo de Zeraías, hijo de Uzi, hijo de Buqui, 5 hijo de Abisúa, hijo de Finees, hijo de Eleazar(C), hijo de Aarón, sumo sacerdote. 6 Este Esdras subió de Babilonia, y era escriba experto en la ley de Moisés, que el Señor, Dios de Israel, había dado(D); y el rey le concedió todo lo que pedía[a] porque la mano del Señor su Dios estaba sobre él(E). 7 También algunos de los hijos de Israel y de los sacerdotes, levitas, cantores, porteros y sirvientes del templo subieron a Jerusalén en el año séptimo del rey Artajerjes(F). 8 Y él llegó a Jerusalén en el quinto mes; era el año séptimo del rey. 9 Porque el primer día del mes primero comenzó a subir[b] de Babilonia; y el primer día del mes quinto llegó a Jerusalén, pues la mano bondadosa de su Dios estaba sobre él(G). 10 Ya que Esdras había dedicado su corazón a estudiar[c] la ley del Señor, y a practicarla, y a enseñar sus estatutos y ordenanzas en Israel(H).
11 Esta es la copia del decreto que el rey Artajerjes dio al sacerdote Esdras, el escriba, instruido en[d] las palabras de los mandamientos del Señor y de sus estatutos para Israel: 12 [e]Artajerjes, rey de reyes(I), al sacerdote Esdras, escriba de la ley del Dios del cielo: Paz perfecta. Y ahora 13 yo he proclamado un decreto(J) de que cualquiera del pueblo de Israel, de sus sacerdotes y de los levitas en mi reino que esté dispuesto a ir a Jerusalén, puede ir contigo. 14 Por cuanto eres enviado por el[f] rey y sus siete consejeros(K) para investigar acerca de Judá y de Jerusalén conforme a la ley de tu Dios que está en tu mano, 15 y para llevar la plata y el oro que el rey y sus consejeros han ofrendado voluntariamente al Dios de Israel, cuya morada está en Jerusalén(L), 16 y toda la plata y el oro(M) que halles en toda la provincia de Babilonia, con la ofrenda voluntaria que el pueblo y los sacerdotes hayan ofrecido voluntariamente para la casa de su Dios que está en Jerusalén(N). 17 Con este dinero, pues, comprarás diligentemente novillos, carneros y corderos, con sus ofrendas de cereal y sus libaciones correspondientes(O), y los ofrecerás sobre el altar de la casa de vuestro Dios que está en Jerusalén(P). 18 Y lo que a ti y a tus hermanos os parezca bien hacer con la plata y el oro que quede, hacedlo conforme a la voluntad de vuestro Dios. 19 También los utensilios que te son entregados para el servicio de la casa de tu Dios, entrégalos todos delante del Dios de Jerusalén. 20 Y lo demás que se necesite para la casa de tu Dios, para lo cual tengas ocasión de proveer, provéelo del tesoro real(Q). 21 Yo, el rey Artajerjes, proclamo un decreto a todos los tesoreros que están en las provincias más allá del río[g], que todo lo que os pida el sacerdote Esdras, escriba de la ley del Dios del cielo(R), sea hecho puntualmente, 22 hasta cien talentos[h] de plata, cien coros[i] de trigo, cien batos[j] de vino, cien batos de aceite y sal sin medida. 23 Todo cuanto ordene el[k] Dios del cielo, sea hecho con esmero para la casa del Dios del cielo, no sea que venga la ira contra el reino del rey y sus hijos(S). 24 También os hacemos saber que no se permite cobrar[l] tributo, impuesto o peaje(T) a ninguno de los sacerdotes, levitas, cantores, porteros, sirvientes, o ministros de esta casa de Dios(U). 25 Y tú, Esdras, conforme a la sabiduría de tu Dios que posees[m], nombra magistrados y jueces para juzgar a todo el pueblo(V) que está en la provincia más allá del río, a todos los que conocen las leyes de tu Dios; y a cualquiera que las ignore, le enseñarás(W). 26 Y todo aquel que no cumpla la ley de tu Dios y la ley del rey, que la justicia se le aplique severamente(X), sea para muerte o destierro o confiscación de bienes o encarcelamiento.
27 Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de nuestros padres, que ha puesto esto en el corazón del rey, para embellecer la casa del Señor que está en Jerusalén(Y), 28 y que me ha extendido misericordia(Z) delante del rey y de sus consejeros y delante de todos los príncipes poderosos del rey. Así fui fortalecido según estaba la mano del Señor mi Dios sobre mí(AA), y reuní a los jefes de Israel para que subieran conmigo.

7 Efter en tid, under den persiske kungen Artaxerxes regering, återvände Esra, son till Seraja, son till Asarja, son till Hilkia, 2 son till Shallum, son till Sadok, son till Achituv, 3 son till Amarja, son till Asarja, son till Merajot, 4 son till Serachja, son till Ussi, son till Bucki, 5 son till Avishua, son till Pinechas, son till Elasar, son till översteprästen Aron.
6 Denne Esra kom från Babylon. Han var skriftlärd och hade mycket goda kunskaper om Moses lag, den som Herren, Israels Gud hade gett. Kungen gav honom allt han begärde, därför att Herren, hans Gud, höll sin hand över honom. 7 Också en del israeliter, däribland präster, leviter, sångare, dörrvaktare och tempeltjänare kom till Jerusalem under Artaxerxes sjunde regeringsår. 8 Esra kom till Jerusalem i den femte månaden i kungens sjunde regeringsår. 9 Han hade påbörjat sin resa från Babylon den första dagen i första månaden, och den första dagen i femte månaden kom han till Jerusalem, för hans Gud höll sin goda hand över honom. 10 Esra hade vigt sitt liv åt att studera och lyda Herrens lag och att undervisa Israel om lag och rätt.
Brevet från kung Artaxerxes
11 Detta är en avskrift av det brev som kung Artaxerxes överlämnade till prästen och den skriftlärde Esra, som var kunnig i Herrens bud och stadgar som han hade gett Israel:
12 ”Från Artaxerxes, kungars kung, till prästen Esra, som undervisar i lagen från himlens Gud, och så vidare.
13 Jag ger härmed en befallning om att varje israelit i mitt rike, även präster och leviter som vill resa till Jerusalem tillsammans med dig, får resa. 14 Kungen och hans sju rådgivare sänder dig för att undersöka om förhållandena i Juda och Jerusalem är i överensstämmelse med din Guds lag, som du förvaltar[a]. 15 Du ska också ta med dig det silver och guld som kungen och hans rådgivare har skänkt åt Israels Gud, som har sin boning i Jerusalem. 16 Dessutom ska du samla in det silver och guld du kan få från provinsen Babylonien liksom de frivilliga gåvor folket och prästerna skänker till sin Guds hus i Jerusalem. 17 För dessa pengar ska du köpa in tjurar, baggar och lamm, med tillhörande matoffer och drickoffer, och offra dem på altaret i er Guds hus i Jerusalem.
18 Det silver och guld som blir över kan du och dina bröder använda på det sätt som ni anser lämpligt enligt Guds vilja. 19 De kärl du fått för tjänsten i din Guds hus ska du lämna inför din Gud i Jerusalem. 20 Det du ytterligare behöver för din Guds hus och ska skaffa ska du få ut från de kungliga skattkamrarna.
21 Jag, kung Artaxerxes, sänder nu denna befallning till alla skattmästare i provinsen väster om Eufrat: Ni ska noggrant ge prästen Esra, som är lärare i himlens Guds lag, vad han än begär av er, 22 upp till tre och ett halvt ton silver, 35 kubik vete, tre och en halv kubik vin och tre och en halv kubik olja[b], och obegränsade mängder av salt. 23 Allt som himlens Gud kräver för sitt tempel ska noggrant göras, för varför skulle vi riskera Guds vrede mot kungen och hans söner? 24 Vi kungör också för er att ingen ska lägga vare sig skatt, avgifter eller tull på någon präst, levit, sångare, dörrvaktare, tempeltjänare eller annan arbetare i detta Guds hus.
25 Och du, Esra, ska efter den visdom som Gud har gett dig, utse domare och lagmän att skipa rätt bland allt folket i provinsen väster om Eufrat, alla dem som känner till Guds lagar. Om någon inte känner till dem, ska ni undervisa dem. 26 Var och en som inte följer din Guds lag och kungens lag, ska omedelbart dömas, antingen till döden, förvisning[c], böter eller fängelse.”
Esra tackar Herren
27 Välsignad vare Herren, våra fäders Gud, som har ingett kungen att göra Herrens hus i Jerusalem så härligt 28 och som har låtit mig möta välvilja inför kungen, hans rådgivare och alla hans mäktiga ämbetsmän! Jag fattade mod, därför att Herren, min Gud, höll sin hand över mig, och jag samlade en del av Israels ledare för att de skulle återvända med mig.

Ezra Comes to Jerusalem
7 After these things, during the reign of Artaxerxes(A) king of Persia, Ezra son of Seraiah,(B) the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,(C) 2 the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok,(D) the son of Ahitub,(E) 3 the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, 4 the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, 5 the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas,(F) the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest— 6 this Ezra(G) came up from Babylon. He was a teacher well versed in the Law of Moses, which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted(H) him everything he asked, for the hand of the Lord his God was on him.(I) 7 Some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers and temple servants, also came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.(J)
8 Ezra arrived in Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the king. 9 He had begun his journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the gracious hand of his God was on him.(K) 10 For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching(L) its decrees and laws in Israel.
King Artaxerxes’ Letter to Ezra
11 This is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes had given to Ezra the priest, a teacher of the Law, a man learned in matters concerning the commands and decrees of the Lord for Israel:
12 Artaxerxes, king of kings,(M)
To Ezra the priest, teacher of the Law of the God of heaven:
Greetings.
13 Now I decree that any of the Israelites in my kingdom, including priests and Levites, who volunteer to go to Jerusalem with you, may go. 14 You are sent by the king and his seven advisers(N) to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem with regard to the Law of your God, which is in your hand. 15 Moreover, you are to take with you the silver and gold that the king and his advisers have freely given(O) to the God of Israel, whose dwelling(P) is in Jerusalem, 16 together with all the silver and gold(Q) you may obtain from the province of Babylon, as well as the freewill offerings of the people and priests for the temple of their God in Jerusalem.(R) 17 With this money be sure to buy bulls, rams and male lambs,(S) together with their grain offerings and drink offerings,(T) and sacrifice(U) them on the altar of the temple of your God in Jerusalem.
18 You and your fellow Israelites may then do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, in accordance with the will of your God. 19 Deliver(V) to the God of Jerusalem all the articles entrusted to you for worship in the temple of your God. 20 And anything else needed for the temple of your God that you are responsible to supply, you may provide from the royal treasury.(W)
21 Now I, King Artaxerxes, decree that all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates are to provide with diligence whatever Ezra the priest, the teacher of the Law of the God of heaven, may ask of you— 22 up to a hundred talents[a] of silver, a hundred cors[b] of wheat, a hundred baths[c] of wine, a hundred baths[d] of olive oil, and salt without limit. 23 Whatever the God of heaven has prescribed, let it be done with diligence for the temple of the God of heaven. Why should his wrath fall on the realm of the king and of his sons?(X) 24 You are also to know that you have no authority to impose taxes, tribute or duty(Y) on any of the priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers, temple servants or other workers at this house of God.(Z)
25 And you, Ezra, in accordance with the wisdom of your God, which you possess, appoint(AA) magistrates and judges to administer justice to all the people of Trans-Euphrates—all who know the laws of your God. And you are to teach(AB) any who do not know them. 26 Whoever does not obey the law of your God and the law of the king must surely be punished by death, banishment, confiscation of property, or imprisonment.[e](AC)
27 Praise be to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, who has put it into the king’s heart(AD) to bring honor(AE) to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem in this way 28 and who has extended his good favor(AF) to me before the king and his advisers and all the king’s powerful officials. Because the hand of the Lord my God was on me,(AG) I took courage and gathered leaders from Israel to go up with me.

12 Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and at such a time.
13 I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.
14 Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;
15 And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,
16 And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem:
17 That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.
18 And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.
19 The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.

23 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?
24 Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.
25 And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not.
26 And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.
27 Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem:
28 And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the Lord my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.

The king granted him all his request, (F)according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him. 7 (G)Some of the children of Israel, the priests, (H)the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and (I)the Nethinim came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes. 8 And Ezra came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9 On the first day of the first month he began his journey from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, (J)according to the good hand of his God upon him. 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to (K)seek[a] the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to (L)teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.
The Letter of Artaxerxes to Ezra
11 This is a copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave Ezra the priest, the scribe, expert in the words of the commandments of the Lord, and of His statutes to Israel:
To Ezra the priest, a scribe of the Law of the God of heaven:
13 I issue a decree that all those of the people of Israel and the priests and Levites in my realm, who volunteer to go up to Jerusalem, may go with you. 14 And whereas you are being sent [d]by the king and his (O)seven counselors to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, with regard to the Law of your God which is in your hand; 15 and whereas you are to carry the silver and gold which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, (P)whose dwelling is in Jerusalem; 16 (Q)and whereas all the silver and gold that you may find in all the province of Babylon, along with the freewill offering of the people and the priests, are to be (R)freely offered for the [e]house of their God in Jerusalem— 17 now therefore, be careful to buy with this money bulls, rams, and lambs, with their (S)grain offerings and their drink offerings, and (T)offer them on the altar of the house of your God in Jerusalem.
18 And whatever seems good to you and your brethren to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, do it according to the will of your God. 19 Also the articles that are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver in full before the God of Jerusalem. 20 And whatever more may be needed for the house of your God, which you may have occasion to provide, pay for it from the king’s treasury.
21 And I, even I, Artaxerxes the king, issue a decree to all the treasurers who are in the region beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, let it be done diligently, 22 up to one hundred talents of silver, one hundred kors of wheat, one hundred baths of wine, one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribed limit. 23 Whatever [f]is commanded by the God of heaven, let it diligently be done for the [g]house of the God of heaven. For why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?
24 Also we inform you that it shall not be lawful to impose tax, tribute, or custom on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, Nethinim, or servants of this house of God. 25 And you, Ezra, according to your God-given wisdom, (U)set magistrates and judges who may judge all the people who are in the region beyond the River, all such as know the laws of your God; and (V)teach those who do not know them. 26 Whoever will not observe the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily on him, whether it be death, or [h]banishment, or confiscation of goods, or imprisonment.
