Os israelitas arrependem-se e despedem suas mulheres heteias
10 E orando Esdras assim, e fazendo esta confissão, e chorando, e prostrando-se diante da Casa de Deus, ajuntou-se a ele de Israel uma mui grande congregação de homens e mulheres e de crianças, porque o povo chorava com grande choro. 2 Então, respondeu Secanias, filho de Jeiel, um dos filhos de Elão, e disse a Esdras: Nós temos transgredido contra o nosso Deus e casamos com mulheres estranhas do povo da terra, mas, no tocante a isso, ainda há esperança para Israel. 3 Agora, pois, façamos concerto com o nosso Deus, de que despediremos todas as mulheres e tudo o que é nascido delas, conforme o conselho do Senhor e dos que tremem no mandado do nosso Deus; e faça-se conforme a Lei. 4 Levanta-te, pois, porque te pertence este negócio, e nós seremos contigo; esforça-te e faze assim. 5 Então, Esdras se levantou e ajuramentou os maiorais dos sacerdotes e dos levitas e todo o Israel, de que fariam conforme esta palavra; e eles juraram.
6 E Esdras se levantou de diante da Casa de Deus, e entrou na câmara de Jeoanã, filho de Eliasibe, e, vindo lá, pão não comeu, e água não bebeu, porque estava angustiado pela transgressão dos do cativeiro. 7 E fizeram passar pregão, por Judá e Jerusalém, a todos os que vieram do cativeiro, para que se ajuntassem em Jerusalém; 8 e que todo aquele que, em três dias, não viesse, segundo o conselho dos príncipes e dos anciãos, toda a sua fazenda se poria em interdito, e ele seria separado da congregação dos do cativeiro.
9 Então, todos os homens de Judá e Benjamim, em três dias, se ajuntaram em Jerusalém; era o nono mês, no dia vinte do mês; e todo o povo se assentou na praça da Casa de Deus, tremendo por este negócio e por causa das grandes chuvas. 10 Então, se levantou Esdras, o sacerdote, e disse-lhes: Vós tendes transgredido e casastes com mulheres estranhas, multiplicando o delito de Israel. 11 Agora, pois, fazei confissão ao Senhor, Deus de vossos pais, e fazei a sua vontade; apartai-vos dos povos das terras e das mulheres estranhas. 12 E respondeu toda a congregação e disse em altas vozes: Assim seja; conforme as tuas palavras, nos convém fazer. 13 Porém o povo é muito, e também é tempo de grandes chuvas, e não se pode estar aqui fora; nem é obra de um dia nem de dois, porque somos muitos os que transgredimos neste negócio. 14 Ora, ponham-se os nossos príncipes, por toda a congregação, sobre este negócio; e todos os que, em nossas cidades, casaram com mulheres estranhas venham em tempos apontados, e com eles os anciãos de cada cidade, e os seus juízes, até que desviemos de nós o ardor da ira do nosso Deus, por esta causa. 15 Porém somente Jônatas, filho de Asael, e Jazeías, filho de Ticva, se puseram sobre este negócio; e Mesulão e Sabetai, levita, os ajudaram.
16 E assim o fizeram os que tornaram do cativeiro; e apartaram-se o sacerdote Esdras e os homens, cabeças dos pais segundo a casa de seus pais, e todos pelos seus nomes; e assentaram-se no primeiro dia do décimo mês, para inquirirem neste negócio. 17 E acabaram de tratar com todos os homens que casaram com mulheres estranhas, até ao primeiro dia do primeiro mês.
18 E acharam-se dos filhos dos sacerdotes que casaram com mulheres estranhas: dos filhos de Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e seus irmãos, Maaseias, e Eliézer, e Jaribe, e Gedalias. 19 E deram-se as mãos, prometendo que despediriam suas mulheres, e, achando-se culpados, ofereceram um carneiro do rebanho pelo seu delito. 20 E dos filhos de Imer: Hanani e Zebadias. 21 E dos filhos de Harim: Maaseias, e Elias, e Semaías, e Jeiel, e Uzias. 22 E dos filhos de Pasur: Elioenai, Maaseias, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabade e Elasa.
23 E dos levitas: Jozabade, e Simei, e Quelaías (este é Quelita), e Petaías, e Judá, e Eliézer. 24 E dos cantores: Eliasibe; e dos porteiros: Salum, e Telém, e Uri.
25 E de Israel, dos filhos de Parós: Ramias, e Jezias, e Malquias, e Miamim, e Eleazar, e Malquias, e Benaia. 26 E dos filhos de Elão: Matanias, e Zacarias, e Jeiel, e Abdi, e Jeremote, e Elias. 27 E dos filhos de Zatu: Elioenai, e Eliasibe, e Matanias, e Jeremote, e Zabade, e Aziza. 28 E dos filhos de Bebai: Jeoanã, Hananias, Zabai e Atlai. 29 E dos filhos de Bani: Mesulão, e Maluque, e Adaías, e Jasube, e Seal, e Jeremote. 30 E dos filhos de Paate-Moabe: Adna, e Quelal, e Benaia, e Maaseias, e Matanias, e Bezalel, e Binui, e Manassés. 31 E dos filhos de Harim: Eliézer, Issias, Malquias, Semaías, Simeão, 32 Benjamim, Maluque e Semarias. 33 Dos filhos de Hasum: Matenai, Matatá, Zabade, Elifelete, Jeremai, Manassés e Simei. 34 Dos filhos de Bani: Maadai, Anrão, e Uel, 35 Benaia, Bedias, Queluí, 36 Vanias, Meremote, Eliasibe, 37 Matanias, Matenai, Jaasai, 38 Bani, Binui, Simei, 39 Selemias, Natã, Adaías, 40 Macnadebai, Sasai, Sarai, 41 Azarel, Selemias, Semarias, 42 Salum, Amarias e José. 43 Dos filhos de Nebo: Jeiel, Matitias, Zabade, Zebina, Jadai, Joel e Benaia. 44 Todos estes tinham tomado mulheres estranhas; e alguns deles tinham mulheres de quem alcançaram filhos.

O povo confessa os seus pecados
10 Enquanto Esdras orava, fazia essa confissão e chorava postrado diante do templo de Deus, um grande grupo de homens, mulheres e crianças israelitas reuniram-se ao seu redor. Eles também choravam amargamente. 2 Então Secanias (filho de Jeiel, um dos descendentes de Elão) disse a Esdras:
—Não temos sido fiéis ao nosso Deus porque temos nos casado com pessoas dos povos vizinhos. Mas ainda assim há esperança para Israel. 3 Agora façamos uma aliança diante do nosso Deus para expulsar todas essas mulheres e os seus filhos. Assim seguiremos o seu conselho e o das pessoas que respeitam as leis do nosso Deus. 4 Fique em pé, Esdras! Embora isto seja responsabilidade sua, nós o apoiaremos. Seja valente e faça isso!
5 Então Esdras se levantou. Fez jurar aos chefes dos sacerdotes, aos levitas e a todos os israelitas que cumpririam o que tinham proposto. Todos concordaram e fizeram a promessa. 6 Então Esdras se afastou da casa de Deus e foi para o quarto de Joanã (filho de Eliasibe). Ali passou a noite[a] sem comer nem beber nada. Ficou muito triste porque os que tinham voltado do desterro eram infiéis a Deus. 7 Depois enviou uma mensagem para Judá e Jerusalém. A mensagem dizia que todos os judeus que tinham voltado do cativeiro deviam se reunir em Jerusalém. 8 Os altos ministros e os líderes decidiram que a pessoa que não chegasse a Jerusalém num período de três dias teria que renunciar às suas propriedades e não pertenceria mais à comunidade dos que tinham voltado do exílio.
9 Portanto em três dias todos os homens de Judá e Benjamim reuniram-se em Jerusalém. No vigésimo dia do nono mês[b] todo os homens se reuniu no pátio do templo. Por causa dessa questão e da forte chuva que caía nesse momento, o povo tremia. 10 Então o sacerdote Esdras se pôs de pé e disse:
—Vocês não foram fiéis a Deus ao se casarem com mulheres estrangeiras. Fazendo isso vocês tornaram o povo de Israel mais culpado. 11 Agora, vocês devem confessar ao SENHOR, o Deus dos seus antepassados, que pecaram. Façam o que agrada a Deus, e fiquem longe das pessoas que vivem ao seu redor e das mulheres estrangeiras.
12 Então todo o grupo que se reuniu respondeu a Esdras:
—Muito bem, faremos o que disse. 13 Mas há muitas pessoas aqui e estamos na época mais chuvosa do ano, portanto não podemos permanecer fora. Este problema não pode ser resolvido em um ou dois dias porque somos muitos os que temos cometido este pecado. 14 Permita que nossos líderes decidam por todo o grupo que está aqui. A seguir todos aqueles que estiverem casados com mulheres estrangeiras deverão vir até Jerusalém em uma hora determinada. Deixe-os vir com os líderes e juízes dos seus povos. Então Deus deixará de estar irritado conosco.
15 Só uns poucos homens se opunham a este plano: Jônatas (filho de Asael), Jaseías (filho de Ticvá), Mesulão e Sabetai (o levita). 16 Assim os que tinham voltado do cativeiro aceitaram o plano. O sacerdote Esdras escolheu um chefe de família de cada clã. No primeiro dia do décimo mês[c] os homens escolhidos começaram a estudar cada um dos casos. 17 Aproximadamente no primeiro dia do primeiro mês[d] acabaram de discutir os casos de todos os homens que tinham se casado com mulheres estrangeiras.

18 Estes são os nomes dos descendentes dos sacerdotes que se casaram com mulheres estrangeiras:
Dos irmãos e descendentes de Jesua (filho de Jozadaque): Maaseias, Eliézer, Jaribe e Gedalias. 19 Todos eles prometeram se divorciar das suas esposas e ofereceram um carneiro do rebanho pelo seu pecado.
20 Dos descendentes de Imer: Hanani e Zebadias.
21 Dos descendentes de Harim: Maaseias, Elias, Semaías, Jeiel e Uzias.
22 Dos descendentes de Pasur: Elioenai, Maaseias, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabade e Eleasa.
23 Dos levitas:
Jozabade, Simei, Quelaías (também chamado Quelita), Petaías, Judá e Eliézer.
24 Dos cantores: Eliasibe.
Dos guardas: Salum, Télem e Uri.
25 Dos outros israelitas:
Dos descendentes de Parós: Ramias, Jezias, Malquias, Miamim, Eleazar, Malquias e Benaia.
26 Dos descendentes de Elão: Matanias, Zacarias, Jeiel, Abdi, Jeremote e Elias.

Confession of Improper Marriages
10 Now (A)while Ezra was praying, and while he was confessing, weeping, and bowing down (B)before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept very (C)bitterly. 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have (D)trespassed[a] against our God, and have taken pagan wives from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel in spite of this. 3 Now therefore, let us make (E)a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who (F)tremble at (G)the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the (H)law. 4 Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. (I)Be of good courage, and do it.”
5 Then Ezra arose, and made the leaders of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel (J)swear an oath that they would do according to this word. So they swore an oath. 6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he (K)ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity.
7 And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the descendants of the captivity, that they must gather at Jerusalem, 8 and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the instructions of the leaders and elders, all his property would be confiscated, and he himself would be separated from the assembly of those from the captivity.
9 So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and (L)all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of heavy rain. 10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have [b]transgressed and [c]have taken pagan wives, adding to the guilt of Israel. 11 Now therefore, (M)make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; (N)separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives.”
12 Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, “Yes! As you have said, so we must do. 13 But there are many people; it is the season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have transgressed in this matter. 14 Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until (O)the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.” 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and (P)Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support.
16 Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain (Q)heads of the fathers’ households, were set apart by the fathers’ households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17 By the first day of the first month they finished questioning all the men who had taken pagan wives.
Pagan Wives Put Away
18 And among the sons of the priests who had taken pagan wives the following were found of the sons of (R)Jeshua the son of [d]Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19 And they (S)gave their promise that they would put away their wives; and being (T)guilty, they presented a ram of the flock as their (U)trespass offering.
20 Also of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah; 21 of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah; 22 of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23 Also of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
24 Also of the singers: Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.
25 And others of Israel: of the (V)sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Jeziah, Malchiah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah; 26 of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Eliah; 27 of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza; 28 of the (W)sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai; 29 of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and [e]Ramoth; 30 of the (X)sons of Pahath-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh; 31 of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, 32 Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah; 33 of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei; 34 of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel, 35 Benaiah, Bedeiah, [f]Cheluh, 36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, 37 Mattaniah, Mattenai, [g]Jaasai, 38 Bani, Binnui, Shimei, 39 Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah, 40 Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai, 41 Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah, 42 Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph; 43 of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, [h]Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah.
44 All these had taken pagan wives, and some of them had wives by whom they had children.

The People’s Confession of Sin
10 While Ezra was praying and confessing,(A) weeping(B) and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites—men, women and children—gathered around him. They too wept bitterly. 2 Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam,(C) said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful(D) to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.(E) 3 Now let us make a covenant(F) before our God to send away(G) all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law. 4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”
5 So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath(H) to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath. 6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he was there, he ate no food and drank no water,(I) because he continued to mourn over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
7 A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem. 8 Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
9 Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin(J) had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the rain. 10 Then Ezra(K) the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel’s guilt.(L) 11 Now honor[a] the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.”(M)
12 The whole assembly responded with a loud voice:(N) “You are right! We must do as you say. 13 But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing. 14 Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges(O) of each town, until the fierce anger(P) of our God in this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai(Q) the Levite, opposed this.
16 So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases, 17 and by the first day of the first month they finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.

18 Among the descendants of the priests, the following had married foreign women:(R)
From the descendants of Joshua(S) son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah. 19 (They all gave their hands(T) in pledge to put away their wives, and for their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.)(U)
20 From the descendants of Immer:(V)
Hanani and Zebadiah.
21 From the descendants of Harim:(W)
Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel and Uzziah.
22 From the descendants of Pashhur:(X)
Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad and Elasah.
23 Among the Levites:(Y)
Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
24 From the musicians:
Eliashib.(Z)
From the gatekeepers:
Shallum, Telem and Uri.
25 And among the other Israelites:
