Expulsión de las mujeres extranjeras
10 Mientras Esdras estaba en el templo de Dios, de rodillas y orando, llorando y confesando sus pecados, una gran multitud de israelitas se le unió; eran hombres, mujeres y niños, que lloraban amargamente. 2 Entonces Secanías hijo de Yejiel, que era de la familia de Elam, le dijo a Esdras:
«Hemos pecado contra nuestro Dios. Hemos tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras, de los pueblos de estas tierras. No obstante, creo que los israelitas aún tenemos esperanza. 3 Hagamos con nuestro Dios el pacto de despedir a todas esas mujeres que tenemos por esposas, lo mismo que a sus hijos, y cumplamos la ley, en conformidad con el consejo que nos has dado y el de los que temen los mandamientos de nuestro Dios. 4 Levántate, y manos a la obra, que ésa es tu responsabilidad. Tú, pon todo tu empeño, que nosotros te apoyaremos.»
5 Entonces Esdras se levantó y tomó juramento a los jefes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, y a todo el pueblo de Israel, para que se comprometieran a cumplir todo lo que habían dicho. 6 Luego, salió del templo y se dirigió a la habitación de Johanán hijo de Eliasib, y una vez allí no comió ni bebió nada, pues estaba muy triste por el pecado de los israelitas que habían vuelto del cautiverio. 7 Acto seguido, enviaron mensajeros a Judá y a Jerusalén para que todos los israelitas nacidos en Babilonia se reunieran en Jerusalén. 8 Los que no llegaran en un plazo de tres días, conforme al pacto aceptado por los jefes y los ancianos, perderían sus posesiones y serían excluidos de la comunidad de los repatriados. 9 Fue así como todos los descendientes de Judá y de Benjamín se reunieron en Jerusalén en el plazo fijado. La reunión tuvo lugar el día veinte del mes noveno, en la plaza del templo de Dios. Todos temblaban de miedo por causa de la lluvia y por tener que afrontar este asunto. 10 Entonces el sacerdote Esdras se puso de pie y les dijo:
«Ustedes han pecado al tomar por esposas a mujeres de otros pueblos. Con esto han añadido más pecados a los ya cometidos por el pueblo de Israel. 11 Lo que deben hacer ahora es dar gloria al Señor, Dios de nuestros padres, y comprometerse a cumplir su voluntad, y separarse de los pueblos que habitan estas tierras y de las mujeres extranjeras.»
12 Todos los convocados respondieron en alta voz:
«Haremos todo lo que nos has dicho. 13 Pero somos muchos, está lloviendo, y no podemos quedarnos en la calle. Además, este asunto no va a resolverse en un día ni dos, pues somos muchos los que hemos incurrido en este pecado. 14 Que se queden nuestros jefes, y que aquellos que vivan en nuestras ciudades y hayan tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras vengan a Jerusalén en tiempos determinados, junto con los ancianos y jueces de cada ciudad, hasta que apartemos de nosotros la ira de nuestro Dios.»
15 Solamente Jonatán hijo de Asael y Jahazías hijo de Ticvá se opusieron, apoyados por los levitas Mesulán y Sabetay.
16 Así lo hicieron los que habían vuelto del cautiverio. Entonces eligieron al sacerdote Esdras y a ciertos jefes de las familias patriarcales, y todos los que habían sido nombrados se presentaron el primer día del mes décimo para dilucidar este asunto. 17 El juicio se prolongó hasta el primer día del mes primero, y comparecieron todos los que habían tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras.
18 La siguiente es una lista de los hijos de los sacerdotes que tomaron por esposas a mujeres extranjeras.
De los hijos de Josué hijo de Josadac, y de sus hermanos: Maseías, Eliezer, Jarib y Gedalías. 19 Éstos juraron que despedirían a sus mujeres, y como ofrenda por su pecado ofrecieron un carnero de sus rebaños.
20 De los hijos de Imer: Jananí y Zebadías.
21 De los hijos de Jarín: Maseías, Elías, Semaías, Yejiel y Uzías.
22 De los hijos de Pasjur: Elioguenay, Maseías, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabad y Elasa.
23 De los descendientes de los levitas: Jozabad, Simey, Kelaía (es decir, Kelita), Petajías, Judá y Eliezer.
24 De los cantores: Eliasib.
De los porteros: Salún, Telén y Uri.
25 Otros israelitas fueron:
De los hijos de Paros: Ramía, Jezías, Malquías, Mijamín, Eleazar, Malquías y Benaías.
26 De los hijos de Elam: Matanías, Zacarías, Yejiel, Abdi, Jeremot y Elías.
27 De los hijos de Zatu: Elioguenay, Eliasib, Matanías, Jeremot, Zabad y Aziza.
28 De los hijos de Bebay: Johanán, Jananías, Zabay y Atlay.
29 De los hijos de Bani: Mesulán, Maluc, Adaías, Jasub, Seal y Ramot.
30 De los hijos de Pajat Moab: Adna, Quelal, Benaías, Maseías, Matanías, Besalel, Binúi y Manasés.
31 De los hijos de Jarín: Eliezer, Isías, Malquías, Semaías, Simeón, 32 Benjamín, Maluc y Semarías.
33 De los hijos de Jasún: Matenay, Matata, Zabad, Elifelet, Yeremay, Manasés y Simey.
34 De los hijos de Bani: Maday, Amirán, Uel, 35 Benaías, Bedías, Queluí, 36 Vanías, Meremot, Eliasib, 37 Matanías, Matenay, Jasay, 38 Bani, Binúi, Simey, 39 Selemías, Natán, Adaías, 40 Macnadebay, Sasay, Saraí, 41 Azareel, Selemías, Semarías, 42 Salún, Amarías y José.
43 De los hijos de Nebo: Yeguiel, Matatías, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, Joel y Benaías.
44 Todos estos habían tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras, y muchas de ellas habían tenido hijos.

10 Pendant qu’Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s’était rassemblé auprès de lui une foule très nombreuse de gens d’Israël, hommes, femmes et enfants, et le peuple répandait d’abondantes larmes.
2 Alors Schecania, fils de Jehiel, d’entre les fils d’Elam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras: Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu, en nous alliant à des femmes étrangères qui appartiennent aux peuples du pays. Mais Israël ne reste pas pour cela sans espérance. 3 Faisons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu pour le renvoi de toutes ces femmes et de leurs enfants, selon l’avis de mon seigneur et de ceux qui tremblent devant les commandements de notre Dieu. Et que l’on agisse d’après la loi. 4 Lève-toi, car cette affaire te regarde. Nous serons avec toi. Prends courage et agis.
5 Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des sacrificateurs, des Lévites, et de tout Israël, de faire ce qui venait d’être dit. Et ils le jurèrent. 6 Puis Esdras se retira de devant la maison de Dieu, et il alla dans la chambre de Jochanan, fils d’Eliaschib; quand il y fut entré, il ne mangea point de pain et il ne but point d’eau, parce qu’il était dans la désolation à cause du péché des fils de la captivité.
7 On publia dans Juda et à Jérusalem que tous les fils de la captivité aient à se réunir à Jérusalem, 8 et que, d’après l’avis des chefs et des anciens, quiconque ne s’y serait pas rendu dans trois jours aurait tous ses biens confisqués et serait lui-même exclu de l’assemblée des fils de la captivité.
9 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours. C’était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple se tenait sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de la circonstance et par suite de la pluie. 10 Esdras, le sacrificateur, se leva et leur dit: Vous avez péché en vous alliant à des femmes étrangères, et vous avez rendu Israël encore plus coupable. 11 Confessez maintenant votre faute à l’Eternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites sa volonté! Séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères.
12 Toute l’assemblée répondit d’une voix haute: A nous de faire comme tu l’as dit! 13 Mais le peuple est nombreux, le temps est à la pluie, et il n’est pas possible de rester dehors; d’ailleurs, ce n’est pas l’œuvre d’un jour ou deux, car il y en a beaucoup parmi nous qui ont péché dans cette affaire. 14 Que nos chefs restent donc pour toute l’assemblée; et tous ceux qui dans nos villes se sont alliés à des femmes étrangères viendront à des époques fixes, avec les anciens et les juges de chaque ville, jusqu’à ce que l’ardente colère de notre Dieu se soit détournée de nous au sujet de cette affaire.
15 Jonathan, fils d’Asaël, et Jachzia, fils de Thikva, appuyés par Meschullam et par le Lévite Schabthaï, furent les seuls à combattre cet avis, 16 auquel se conformèrent les fils de la captivité. On choisit Esdras, le sacrificateur, et des chefs de famille selon leurs maisons paternelles, tous désignés par leurs noms; et ils siégèrent le premier jour du dixième mois pour s’occuper de la chose. 17 Le premier jour du premier mois, ils en finirent avec tous les hommes qui s’étaient alliés à des femmes étrangères.
18 Parmi les fils de sacrificateurs, il s’en trouva qui s’étaient alliés à des femmes étrangères: des fils de Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et de ses frères, Maaséja, Eliézer, Jarib et Guedalia, 19 qui s’engagèrent, en donnant la main, à renvoyer leurs femmes et à offrir un bélier en sacrifice de culpabilité; 20 des fils d’Immer, Hanani et Zebadia; 21 des fils de Harim, Maaséja, Elie, Schemaeja, Jehiel et Ozias; 22 des fils de Paschhur, Eljoénaï, Maaséja, Ismaël, Nethaneel, Jozabad et Eleasa.
23 Parmi les Lévites: Jozabad, Schimeï, Kélaja ou Kelitha, Pethachja, Juda et Eliézer.
24 Parmi les chantres: Eliaschib. Parmi les portiers: Schallum, Thélem et Uri.
25 Parmi ceux d’Israël: des fils de Pareosch, Ramia, Jizzija, Malkija, Mijamin, Eléazar, Malkija et Benaja; 26 des fils d’Elam, Matthania, Zacharie, Jehiel, Abdi, Jerémoth et Elie; 27 des fils de Zatthu, Eljoénaï, Eliaschib, Matthania, Jerémoth, Zabad et Aziza; 28 des fils de Bébaï, Jochanan, Hanania, Zabbaï et Athlaï; 29 des fils de Bani, Meschullam, Malluc, Adaja, Jaschub, Scheal et Ramoth; 30 des fils de Pachath-Moab, Adna, Kelal, Benaja, Maaséja, Matthania, Betsaleel, Binnuï et Manassé; 31 des fils de Harim, Eliézer, Jischija, Malkija, Schemaeja, Siméon, 32 Benjamin, Malluc et Schemaria; 33 des fils de Haschum, Matthnaï, Matthattha, Zabad, Eliphéleth, Jerémaï, Manassé et Schimeï; 34 des fils de Bani, Maadaï, Amram, Uel, 35 Benaja, Bédia, Keluhu, 36 Vania, Merémoth, Eliaschib, 37 Matthania, Matthnaï, Jaasaï, 38 Bani, Binnuï, Schimeï, 39 Schélémia, Nathan, Adaja, 40 Macnadbaï, Schaschaï, Scharaï, 41 Azareel, Schélémia, Schemaria, 42 Schallum, Amaria et Joseph; 43 des fils de Nebo, Jeïel, Matthithia, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddaï, Joël et Benaja.

10 Now (A)while Ezra was praying, and while he was confessing, weeping, and bowing down (B)before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept very (C)bitterly. 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have (D)trespassed[a] against our God, and have taken pagan wives from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel in spite of this. 3 Now therefore, let us make (E)a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who (F)tremble at (G)the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the (H)law. 4 Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. (I)Be of good courage, and do it.”
5 Then Ezra arose, and made the leaders of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel (J)swear an oath that they would do according to this word. So they swore an oath. 6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he (K)ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity.
7 And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the descendants of the captivity, that they must gather at Jerusalem, 8 and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the instructions of the leaders and elders, all his property would be confiscated, and he himself would be separated from the assembly of those from the captivity.
9 So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and (L)all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of heavy rain. 10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have [b]transgressed and [c]have taken pagan wives, adding to the guilt of Israel. 11 Now therefore, (M)make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; (N)separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives.”
12 Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, “Yes! As you have said, so we must do. 13 But there are many people; it is the season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have transgressed in this matter. 14 Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until (O)the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.” 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and (P)Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support.
16 Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain (Q)heads of the fathers’ households, were set apart by the fathers’ households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17 By the first day of the first month they finished questioning all the men who had taken pagan wives.
Pagan Wives Put Away
18 And among the sons of the priests who had taken pagan wives the following were found of the sons of (R)Jeshua the son of [d]Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19 And they (S)gave their promise that they would put away their wives; and being (T)guilty, they presented a ram of the flock as their (U)trespass offering.
20 Also of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah; 21 of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah; 22 of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23 Also of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
24 Also of the singers: Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

44 All these had taken pagan wives, and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
