Preghiera e confessione di Esdra a causa dei matrimoni con straniere
9 (A)Quando queste cose furono finite, i capi si avvicinarono a me, dicendo: «Il popolo d'*Israele, i *sacerdoti e i *Leviti non si sono separati dai popoli di questi paesi, ma imitano le abominazioni dei *Cananei, degli Ittiti, dei Ferezei, dei Gebusei, degli *Ammoniti, dei *Moabiti, degli Egiziani e degli *Amorei. 2 Infatti hanno preso le loro figlie come mogli per sé e per i propri figli e hanno mescolato la stirpe santa con i popoli di questi paesi; i capi e i magistrati sono stati i primi a commettere questa infedeltà».
3 Quando seppi questo, mi stracciai le vesti e il mantello, mi strappai i capelli dalla testa e i peli della barba, e mi sedetti costernato. 4 Allora tutti quelli che tremavano alle parole del Dio d'Israele si radunarono presso di me a causa dell'infedeltà di quanti erano tornati dall'esilio. Io rimasi cosí seduto e costernato, fino al momento dell'offerta della sera. 5 Al momento dell'offerta della sera, mi alzai dalla mia umiliazione, con le vesti e con il mantello stracciati, caddi in ginocchio e, stendendo le mani verso il Signore, mio Dio, dissi:
6 «Mio Dio, io sono confuso; e mi vergogno, mio Dio, di alzare a te la mia faccia, perché le nostre *iniquità si sono moltiplicate fin sopra la nostra testa, e la nostra colpa è cosí grande che giunge al cielo. 7 Dal tempo dei nostri padri fino a oggi siamo stati grandemente colpevoli; e a causa delle nostre iniquità, noi, i nostri re e i nostri sacerdoti, siamo stati messi in mano ai re dei paesi stranieri, in balía della spada, dell'esilio, della rapina e del disonore, come si vede anche oggi. 8 Ora, per un breve momento, il Signore, nostro Dio, ci ha fatto grazia, lasciandoci alcuni superstiti, e concedendoci un asilo[a] nel suo santo luogo, per illuminare i nostri occhi e darci un po' di sollievo nella nostra schiavitú. 9 Noi infatti siamo schiavi; ma il nostro Dio non ci ha abbandonati nella nostra schiavitú. Anzi ci ha fatto trovare benevolenza verso i re di Persia, i quali ci hanno dato tanto sollievo da poter rialzare la casa del nostro Dio e restaurare le sue rovine, e ci hanno concesso un luogo di riposo[b] in *Giuda e a *Gerusalemme. 10 Ora, nostro Dio, che possiamo dire dopo questo? Noi infatti abbiamo abbandonato i tuoi comandamenti, 11 quelli che ci hai dati mediante i *profeti, tuoi servitori, dicendo: “Il paese nel quale entrate per prenderne possesso, è un paese reso impuro dalla corruzione dei popoli di questi paesi, dalle pratiche abominevoli con le quali lo hanno riempito da un'estremità all'altra con le loro contaminazioni. 12 Ora dunque non date le vostre figlie ai loro figli, e non prendete le loro figlie per i vostri figli, e non ricercate la loro prosperità né il loro benessere, e cosí diventerete voi forti, mangerete i migliori prodotti del paese, e potrete lasciarlo in eredità perenne ai vostri figli”. 13 Ora, dopo tutto quello che ci è accaduto a causa delle nostre azioni malvagie e delle nostre grandi colpe, poiché tu, nostro Dio, ci hai puniti meno severamente di quanto le nostre colpe avrebbero meritato, e hai conservato di noi un residuo come questo, 14 dovremmo di nuovo violare i tuoi comandamenti e imparentarci con questi popoli abominevoli? La tua ira non s'infiammerebbe forse contro di noi fino a consumarci e a non lasciar piú né residuo né superstite? 15 Signore, Dio d'Israele, tu sei giusto, e perciò oggi noi siamo ridotti a un residuo di scampati. Eccoci davanti a te a riconoscere la nostra colpa; poiché per essa, noi non potremmo resistere in tua presenza!»

9 Khi các việc ấy xong rồi, các nhà lãnh đạo đến nói với tôi: “Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, các thầy tế lễ, và người Lê-vi không có sống tách biệt khỏi dân địa phương, là dân có những tập tục ghê tởm như tập tục của dân Ca-na-an, Hết, Phê-rết, Giê-bút, Am-môn, Mô-áp, Ai-cập, và A-mô. 2 Họ cưới con gái địa phương cho chính mình hoặc con mình làm vợ, cho nên dòng giống thánh pha trộn với dân địa phương. Hơn nữa, những người đầu tiên phạm tội bất trung này lại là các nhà lãnh đạo và quan chức.”
3 Nghe tin ấy, tôi xé cả áo trong lẫn áo ngoài,[a] 4 Tất cả những người nào run sợ khi nghe lời của Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên từ từ họp lại chung quanh tôi vì cớ tội bất trung của những người lưu đày hồi hương. Tôi tiếp tục ngồi bàng hoàng cho đến giờ dâng tế lễ thiêu buổi chiều.

5 Đến giờ dâng tế lễ thiêu buổi chiều, tôi đứng dậy khỏi nơi tôi ngồi bàng hoàng chịu khổ nhục,[b] người vẫn còn mặc bộ áo xé rách khi trước, tôi quỳ xuống, dang tay hướng về CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời tôi, 6 và thưa cùng CHÚA:
“Lạy Đức Chúa Trời, con xấu hổ và nhục nhã quá, không dám ngước mặt lên về phía Ngài, ôi lạy Đức Chúa Trời, vì tội chúng con chất ngập đầu, và lỗi chúng con lên đến tận trời. 7 Từ đời tổ tiên chúng con cho đến ngay chính hôm nay, chúng con đã sống trong tội lỗi đầy dẫy. Vì cớ sự gian ác của chúng con nên chúng con, các vua và thầy tế lễ của chúng con đều bị phó vào tay các vua nước ngoài, phó cho gươm dao; tù đày, cướp bóc, và sỉ nhục, như tình cảnh hiện nay.
8 Nhưng bây giờ, CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời chúng con, ban ơn cho chúng con trong một thời gian ngắn: Ngài chừa lại cho chúng con một số người sống sót hồi hương, và ban cho chúng con một nơi tựa vững chắc[c] trong Nơi Thánh, nhờ đó, Đức Chúa Trời chúng con khiến chúng con sáng mắt lên và phấn khởi phần nào trong kiếp nô lệ. 9 Thật vậy, chúng con là nô lệ, tuy nhiên Đức Chúa Trời chúng con không bỏ mặc chúng con trong cảnh nô lệ, nhưng Ngài cho chúng con được lòng các vua Ba-tư, khiến chúng con phấn khởi để xây lại đền thờ Đức Chúa Trời chúng con, và dựng lại những nơi đổ nát; Ngài cũng ban cho chúng con một bức tường bao bọc trong Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem.
10 Và giờ đây, ôi lạy Đức Chúa Trời chúng con, chúng con biết nói gì đây sau những việc vừa xảy ra? Vì chúng con đã phạm[d] điều răn Ngài, 11 mà Ngài đã ban truyền qua các tiên tri, tôi tớ Ngài. Ngài phán như vầy: ‘Đất các con chiếm hữu là một đất ô uế bởi sự ô uế của dân địa phương gây ra qua các tập tục ghê tởm của họ. Họ đã làm đất đầy dẫy sự bất khiết của họ, từ đầu này cho đến đầu kia. 12 Cho nên đừng gả con gái các con cho con trai họ, cũng đừng cưới con gái họ cho con trai các con. Các con chớ hề tìm cầu sự bình an hoặc thịnh vượng cho họ. Như vậy các con mới được hùng cường, hưởng sản vật của đất, và để đất lại làm di sản cho con cháu các con thừa hưởng mai sau.’
13 Sau khi tai họa giáng xuống[e] chúng con vì cớ việc làm gian ác và tội trọng của chúng con, tuy nhiên, ôi hỡi Đức Chúa Trời của chúng con, Ngài chẳng phạt chúng con đáng như tội chúng con phải chịu, Ngài lại ban cho chúng con một nhóm người sống sót hồi hương như hiện nay, 14 lẽ nào chúng con lại vi phạm điều răn Ngài một lần nữa, kết thông gia với những dân tộc có tập tục ghê tởm kia? Chúa há không giận đến mức tiêu diệt hết thảy chúng con, không để lại một người nào sống sót sao? 15 Ôi, lạy CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, Ngài là Đấng công bình, tuy nhiên Ngài cho một nhóm chúng con còn sống sót như hiện nay. Kìa, chúng con ở trước mặt Ngài, mang tội nặng nề,[f] mặc dù không ai được đứng trước mặt Ngài trong tình trạng như vậy!”

9 Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.
3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.
4 Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
5 And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the Lord my God,
6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.
7 Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
9 For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
10 And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,
11 Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.
12 Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
13 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;
14 Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?
15 O Lord God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
