La costruzione del tempio ripresa
5 (A)I profeti Aggeo e Zaccaria, figlio di Iddo, profetizzarono nel nome del Dio d’Israele ai Giudei che erano in Giuda e a Gerusalemme. 2 Allora Zorobabele, figlio di Sealtiel, e Iesua, figlio di Iosadac, andarono a riprendere la costruzione della casa di Dio a Gerusalemme; e con loro erano i profeti di Dio, che li assistevano.
3 In quel medesimo tempo giunsero da loro Tattenai, governatore d’oltre il fiume, Setar-Boznai e i loro colleghi, e parlarono così: «Chi vi ha dato l’ordine di costruire questa casa e di rialzare queste mura?» 4 Poi aggiunsero: «Quali sono i nomi degli uomini che costruiscono quest’edificio?» 5 Ma l’occhio del loro Dio vegliava sugli anziani di Giuda, e quelli non li obbligarono a sospendere i lavori, finché la cosa non fosse stata sottoposta a Dario e da lui fosse giunta una risposta in proposito.
6 Copia della lettera mandata al re Dario da Tattenai, governatore d’oltre il fiume, da Setar-Boznai e dai suoi colleghi, gli Afarsachiti, che risiedevano oltre il fiume. 7 Gli mandarono un rapporto così formulato:
«Al re Dario, perfetta salute!
8 Sappia il re che noi siamo andati nella provincia di Giuda, alla casa del gran Dio. Essa viene costruita con blocchi di pietra e nelle pareti si inserisce del legname; l’opera viene fatta con cura e progredisce nelle loro mani. 9 Noi abbiamo interrogato quegli anziani, e abbiamo detto loro: “Chi vi ha dato l’ordine di costruire questa casa e di rialzare queste mura?” 10 Abbiamo anche domandato i loro nomi perché tu ne prenda nota, e abbiamo scritto i nomi dei loro capi. 11 Questa è la risposta che ci hanno data: “Noi siamo i servi del Dio del cielo e della terra, e ricostruiamo la casa che era stata già costruita molti anni fa: un gran re d’Israele l’aveva costruita e portata a termine. 12 Ma poiché i nostri padri provocarono l’ira del Dio del cielo, Dio li abbandonò nelle mani di Nabucodonosor, il Caldeo, re di Babilonia, il quale distrusse questa casa e deportò la popolazione a Babilonia. 13 Ma Ciro, re di Babilonia, nel suo primo anno di regno, diede ordine che questa casa di Dio fosse ricostruita. 14 Inoltre il re Ciro prelevò dal tempio di Babilonia gli utensili d’oro e d’argento della casa di Dio, che Nabucodonosor aveva portati via dal tempio di Gerusalemme e trasportati nel tempio di Babilonia; li fece consegnare a uno chiamato Sesbasar, che egli aveva fatto governatore, e gli disse: 15 ‘Prendi questi utensili, riportali nel tempio di Gerusalemme, e la casa di Dio sia ricostruita dov’era prima’. 16 Allora lo stesso Sesbasar venne e pose le fondamenta della casa di Dio a Gerusalemme. La costruzione è andata avanti da quel tempo fino a oggi, ma non è ancora conclusa”.
17 Dunque, se così piace al re, si facciano delle ricerche nella casa dei tesori del re a Babilonia, per verificare se vi sia stato un ordine dato dal re Ciro per la costruzione di questo tempio di Dio a Gerusalemme; e il re ci comunichi la sua volontà a questo riguardo».

Tattenai’s Letter to Darius
5 Now Haggai(A) the prophet and Zechariah(B) the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied(C) to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. 2 Then Zerubbabel(D) son of Shealtiel and Joshua(E) son of Jozadak set to work(F) to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.
3 At that time Tattenai,(G) governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai(H) and their associates went to them and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(I) 4 They[a] also asked, “What are the names of those who are constructing this building?” 5 But the eye of their God(J) was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his written reply be received.
6 This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates, the officials of Trans-Euphrates, sent to King Darius. 7 The report they sent him read as follows:
To King Darius:
Cordial greetings.
8 The king should know that we went to the district of Judah, to the temple of the great God. The people are building it with large stones and placing the timbers in the walls. The work(K) is being carried on with diligence and is making rapid progress under their direction.
9 We questioned the elders and asked them, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(L) 10 We also asked them their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
11 This is the answer they gave us:
“We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple(M) that was built many years ago, one that a great king of Israel built and finished. 12 But because our ancestors angered(N) the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar the Chaldean, king of Babylon, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.(O)
13 “However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree(P) to rebuild this house of God. 14 He even removed from the temple[b] of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple[c] in Babylon.(Q) Then King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar,(R) whom he had appointed governor, 15 and he told him, ‘Take these articles and go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.’
16 “So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God(S) in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished.”
17 Now if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives(T) of Babylon to see if King Cyrus did in fact issue a decree to rebuild this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.

Rebuilding Begins Anew
5 Now the prophets, (A)Haggai and (B)Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them. 2 (C)Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and (D)Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were (E)with them, supporting them.
3 At the same time (F)Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and their associates came to them and spoke to them thus: (G)“Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this structure?” 4 They also asked them this:[a] “What are the names of the men who are building this building?” 5 But (H)the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until the report should reach Darius and then an answer be returned by letter concerning it.

6 This is a copy of the letter that (I)Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and his associates, the (J)governors who were in the province Beyond the River, sent to Darius the king. 7 They sent him a report, in which was written as follows: “To Darius the king, all peace. 8 Be it known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands. 9 Then we asked those elders and spoke to them thus: (K)‘Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this structure?’ 10 We also asked them their names, for your information, that we might write down the names of their leaders.[b] 11 And this was their reply to us: ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the house that was built many years ago, (L)which a great king of Israel built and (M)finished. 12 (N)But because our fathers had angered the God of heaven, he (O)gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried away the people to Babylonia. 13 (P)However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree that this house of God should be rebuilt. 14 (Q)And the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, these Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was (R)Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15 and he said to him, “Take these vessels, go and put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its site.” 16 Then this (S)Sheshbazzar came and (T)laid the foundations of the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been in building, and it is (U)not yet finished.’ 17 Therefore, if it seems good to the king, (V)let search be made in the royal archives there in Babylon, to see whether a decree was issued by Cyrus the king for the rebuilding of this house of God in Jerusalem. And let the king send us his pleasure in this matter.”
