31 (A)“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and (B)the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, (C)let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she (D)respects her husband.

Children and Parents

(E)Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (F)“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, (G)but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

31 (A)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to (B)love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she (C)respects her husband.

Children and Parents

(D)Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (E)Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may turn out well for you, and that you may live long on the earth.

(F)Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but (G)bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[a](A) 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife(B) as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.(C) “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”[b](D)

Fathers,[c] do not exasperate your children;(E) instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.(F)

31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”[a] 32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. 33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Children and Parents

Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord,[b] for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”[c]

Fathers,[d] do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.
