²³ For ^(A)the husband is the head of the wife even as ^(B)Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is ^(C)himself its Savior. ²⁴ Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit ^(D)in everything to their husbands.

^25 (E)Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and ^(F)gave himself up for her, ²⁶ that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by ^(G)the washing of water ^(H)with the word, ²⁷ so ^(I)that he might present the church to himself in splendor, ^(J)without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.^{[a] 28} In the same way ^(K)husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. ²⁹ For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, ³⁰ because ^(L)we are members of his body. ^31 (M)“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and ^(N)the two shall become one flesh.” ³² This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. ³³ However, ^(O)let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she ^(P)respects her husband.

²⁹ Jesus answered, “The most important is, ^(A)‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, ^(B)the Lord is one. ³⁰ And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

^4 (A)Love is patient and ^(B)kind; love ^(C)does not envy or boast; it ^(D)is not arrogant ⁵ or rude. It ^(E)does not insist on its own way; it ^(F)is not irritable or resentful;^{[a] 6} it ^(G)does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but ^(H)rejoices with the truth.
