Ephesians 5:1-20

Walk in Love

5 Therefore^(A) be imitators of God as dear ^(B)children. ²And ^(C)walk in love, ^(D)as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God ^(E)for a sweet-smelling aroma.

³But fornication and all ^(F)uncleanness or ^(G)covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; ⁴^(H)neither filthiness, nor ^(I)foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, ^(J)which are not fitting, but rather ^(K)giving of thanks. ⁵For ^[a]this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any ^(L)inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. ⁶Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. ⁷Therefore do not be ^(M)partakers with them.

Walk in Light

⁸For you were once darkness, but now you are ^(N)light in the Lord. Walk as children of light ⁹(for ^(O)the fruit of the ^[b]Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), ¹⁰^(P)finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. ¹¹And have ^(Q)no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather ^[c]expose them. ¹²^(R)For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. ¹³But ^(S)all things that are ^[d]exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. ¹⁴Therefore He says:

^(T)“Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”

Walk in Wisdom

¹⁵^(U)See then that you walk ^[e]circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, ¹⁶^(V)redeeming the time, ^(W)because the days are evil.

¹⁷^(X)Therefore do not be unwise, but ^(Y)understand ^(Z)what the will of the Lord is. ¹⁸And ^(AA)do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, ¹⁹speaking to one another ^(AB)in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making ^(AC)melody in your heart to the Lord, ²⁰^(AD)giving thanks always for all things to God the Father ^(AE)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Idolatry Will Be Punished

14 Now ^(A)some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. ²And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ³“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them ^(B)that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. ^(C)Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?

⁴“Therefore speak to them, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols, ⁵that I may seize the house of Israel by their heart, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.” ’

⁶“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and ^(D)turn your faces away from all your abominations. ⁷For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, then comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I the Lord will answer him by Myself. ⁸^(E)I will set My face against that man and make him a ^(F)sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of My people. ^(G)Then you shall know that I am the Lord.

⁹“And if the prophet is induced to speak anything, I the Lord ^(H)have induced that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel. ¹⁰And they shall bear their iniquity; the punishment of the prophet shall be the same as the punishment of the one who inquired, ¹¹that the house of Israel may ^(I)no longer stray from Me, nor be profaned anymore with all their transgressions, ^(J)but that they may be My people and I may be their God,” says the Lord God.’ ”

Judgment on Persistent Unfaithfulness

¹²The word of the Lord came again to me, saying: ¹³“Son of man, when a land sins against Me by persistent unfaithfulness, I will stretch out My hand against it; I will cut off its ^(K)supply of bread, send famine on it, and cut off man and beast from it. ¹⁴^(L)Even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only themselves ^(M)by their righteousness,” says the Lord God.

¹⁵“If I cause ^(N)wild beasts to pass through the land, and they ^[a]empty it, and make it so desolate that no man may pass through because of the beasts, ¹⁶even ^(O)though these three men were ^[b]in it, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they would deliver neither sons nor daughters; only they would be delivered, and the land would be ^(P)desolate.

¹⁷“Or if ^(Q)I bring a sword on that land, and say, ‘Sword, go through the land,’ and I ^(R)cut off man and beast from it, ¹⁸even ^(S)though these three men were in it, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they would deliver neither sons nor daughters, but only they themselves would be delivered.

¹⁹“Or if I send ^(T)a pestilence into that land and ^(U)pour out My fury on it in blood, and cut off from it man and beast, ²⁰even ^(V)though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they would deliver neither son nor daughter; they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.”

²¹For thus says the Lord God: “How much more it shall be when ^(W)I send My four ^[c]severe judgments on Jerusalem—the sword and famine and wild beasts and pestilence—to cut off man and beast from it? ²²^(X)Yet behold, there shall be left in it a remnant who will be ^(Y)brought out, both sons and daughters; surely they will come out to you, and ^(Z)you will see their ways and their doings. Then you will be comforted concerning the disaster that I have brought upon Jerusalem, all that I have brought upon it. ²³And they will comfort you, when you see their ways and their doings; and you shall know that I have done nothing ^(AA)without cause that I have done in it,” says the Lord God.

The Outcast Vine

15 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: ²“Son of man, how is the wood of the vine better than any other wood, the vine branch which is among the trees of the forest? ³Is wood taken from it to make any object? Or can men make a peg from it to hang any vessel on? ⁴Instead, ^(AB)it is thrown into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both ends of it, and its middle is burned. Is it useful for any work? ⁵Indeed, when it was whole, no object could be made from it. How much less will it be useful for any work when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned?

⁶“Therefore thus says the Lord God: ‘Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give up the inhabitants of Jerusalem; ⁷and ^(AC)I will set My face against them. ^(AD)They will go out from one fire, but another fire shall devour them. ^(AE)Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I set My face against them. ⁸Thus I will make the land desolate, because they have persisted in unfaithfulness,’ says the Lord God.”

God’s Blessing on Israel

44 “Yet hear now, O Jacob My servant,
And Israel whom I have chosen.
²Thus says the Lord who made you
And formed you from the womb, who will help you:
‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant;
And you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
³For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,
And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants,
And My blessing on your offspring;
⁴They will spring up among the grass
Like willows by the watercourses.’
⁵One will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;
Another will call himself by the name of Jacob;
Another will write with his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’
And name himself by the name of Israel.

There Is No Other God

⁶“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel,
And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
^(A)‘I am the First and I am the Last;
Besides Me there is no God.
⁷And ^(B)who can proclaim as I do?
Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me,
Since I appointed the ancient people.
And the things that are coming and shall come,
Let them show these to them.
⁸Do not fear, nor be afraid;
^(C)Have I not told you from that time, and declared it?
^(D)You are My witnesses.
Is there a God besides Me?
Indeed ^(E)there is no other Rock;
I know not one.’ ”

Idolatry Is Foolishness

⁹^(F)Those who make an image, all of them are useless,
And their precious things shall not profit;
They are their own witnesses;
^(G)They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.
¹⁰Who would form a god or mold an image
^(H)That profits him nothing?
¹¹Surely all his companions would be ^(I)ashamed;
And the workmen, they are mere men.
Let them all be gathered together,
Let them stand up;
Yet they shall fear,
They shall be ashamed together.

¹²^(J)The blacksmith with the tongs works one in the coals,
Fashions it with hammers,
And works it with the strength of his arms.
Even so, he is hungry, and his strength fails;
He drinks no water and is faint.

¹³The craftsman stretches out his rule,
He marks one out with chalk;
He fashions it with a plane,
He marks it out with the compass,
And makes it like the figure of a man,
According to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in the house.
¹⁴He cuts down cedars for himself,
And takes the cypress and the oak;
He ^[a]secures it for himself among the trees of the forest.
He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it.

¹⁵Then it shall be for a man to burn,
For he will take some of it and warm himself;
Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread;
Indeed he makes a god and worships it;
He makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.
¹⁶He burns half of it in the fire;
With this half he eats meat;
He roasts a roast, and is satisfied.
He even warms himself and says,
“Ah! I am warm,
I have seen the fire.”
¹⁷And the rest of it he makes into a god,
His carved image.
He falls down before it and worships it,
Prays to it and says,
“Deliver me, for you are my god!”

¹⁸^(K)They do not know nor understand;
For ^(L)He has ^[b]shut their eyes, so that they cannot see,
And their hearts, so that they cannot ^(M)understand.
¹⁹And no one ^(N)considers in his heart,
Nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say,
“I have burned half of it in the fire,
Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals;
I have roasted meat and eaten it;
And shall I make the rest of it an abomination?
Shall I fall down before a block of wood?”
²⁰He feeds on ashes;
^(O)A deceived heart has turned him aside;
And he cannot deliver his soul,
Nor say, “Is there not a ^(P)lie in my right hand?”

Israel Is Not Forgotten

²¹“Remember these, O Jacob,
And Israel, for you are My servant;
I have formed you, you are My servant;
O Israel, you will not be ^(Q)forgotten by Me!
²²^(R)I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions,
And like a cloud, your sins.
Return to Me, for ^(S)I have redeemed you.”

²³^(T)Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done it!
Shout, you lower parts of the earth;
Break forth into singing, you mountains,
O forest, and every tree in it!
For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
And ^(U)glorified Himself in Israel.

Judah Will Be Restored

²⁴Thus says the Lord, ^(V)your Redeemer,
And ^(W)He who formed you from the womb:
“I am the Lord, who makes all things,
^(X)Who stretches out the heavens ^[c]all alone,
Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself;
²⁵Who ^(Y)frustrates the signs ^(Z)of the babblers,
And drives diviners mad;
Who turns wise men backward,
^(AA)And makes their knowledge foolishness;
²⁶^(AB)Who confirms the word of His servant,
And performs the counsel of His messengers;
Who says to Jerusalem, ‘You shall be inhabited,’
To the cities of Judah, ‘You shall be built,’
And I will raise up her waste places;
²⁷^(AC)Who says to the deep, ‘Be dry!
And I will dry up your rivers’;
²⁸Who says of ^(AD)Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd,
And he shall perform all My pleasure,
Saying to Jerusalem, ^(AE)“You shall be built,”
And to the temple, “Your foundation shall be laid.” ’
