Ephesians 4
English Standard Version
Unity in the Body of Christ
4Â I therefore, (A)a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to (B)walk in a manner worthy of (C)the calling to which you have been called, 2Â with all (D)humility and (E)gentleness, with (F)patience, (G)bearing with one another in love, 3Â eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in (H)the bond of peace. 4Â There is (I)one body and (J)one Spiritâjust as you were called to the one (K)hope that belongs to your callâ 5Â (L)one Lord, (M)one faith, (N)one baptism, 6Â (O)one God and Father of all, (P)who is over all and through all and in all. 7Â But (Q)grace was given (R)to each one of us (S)according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8Â Therefore it says,
9Â ((V)In saying, âHe ascended,â what does it mean but that he had also descended into (W)the lower regions, the earth?[b] 10Â He who descended is the one who also (X)ascended (Y)far above all the heavens, that he might (Z)fill all things.) 11Â And (AA)he gave the (AB)apostles, the prophets, the (AC)evangelists, the (AD)shepherds[c] and teachers,[d] 12Â (AE)to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for (AF)building up (AG)the body of Christ, 13Â until we all attain to (AH)the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, (AI)to mature manhood,[e] to the measure of the stature of (AJ)the fullness of Christ, 14Â so that we may no longer be children, (AK)tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in (AL)deceitful schemes. 15Â Rather, (AM)speaking the truth in love, we are to (AN)grow up in every way into him who is (AO)the head, into Christ, 16Â (AP)from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, (AQ)when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
The New Life
17Â Now this I say and (AR)testify in the Lord, (AS)that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, (AT)in the futility of their minds. 18Â They (AU)are darkened in their understanding, (AV)alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to (AW)their hardness of heart. 19Â They (AX)have become callous and (AY)have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20Â But that is not the way you (AZ)learned Christ!â 21Â assuming that (BA)you have heard about him and (BB)were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22Â to (BC)put off (BD)your old self,[f] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through (BE)deceitful desires, 23Â and (BF)to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24Â and to put on (BG)the new self, (BH)created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
25Â Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you (BI)speak the truth with his neighbor, for (BJ)we are members one of another. 26Â (BK)Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27Â and (BL)give no opportunity to the devil. 28Â Let the thief no longer steal, but rather (BM)let him labor, (BN)doing honest work with his own hands, so (BO)that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29Â (BP)Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give (BQ)grace to those who hear. 30Â And (BR)do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, (BS)by whom you were sealed for the day of (BT)redemption. 31Â (BU)Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32Â (BV)Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, (BW)forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Unity and Maturity in the Body of Christ
4Â As a prisoner(A) for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy(B) of the calling(C) you have received. 2Â Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another(D) in love.(E) 3Â Make every effort to keep the unity(F) of the Spirit through the bond of peace.(G) 4Â There is one body(H) and one Spirit,(I) just as you were called to one hope when you were called(J); 5Â one Lord,(K) one faith, one baptism; 6Â one God and Father of all,(L) who is over all and through all and in all.(M)
7Â But to each one of us(N) grace(O) has been given(P) as Christ apportioned it. 8Â This is why it[a] says:
9Â (What does âhe ascendedâ mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[c]? 10Â He who descended is the very one who ascended(S) higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)(T) 11Â So Christ himself gave(U) the apostles,(V) the prophets,(W) the evangelists,(X) the pastors and teachers,(Y) 12Â to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ(Z) may be built up(AA) 13Â until we all reach unity(AB) in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God(AC) and become mature,(AD) attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.(AE)
14Â Then we will no longer be infants,(AF) tossed back and forth by the waves,(AG) and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.(AH) 15Â Instead, speaking the truth in love,(AI) we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head,(AJ) that is, Christ. 16Â From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows(AK) and builds itself up(AL) in love,(AM) as each part does its work.
Instructions for Christian Living
17Â So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer(AN) live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.(AO) 18Â They are darkened in their understanding(AP) and separated from the life of God(AQ) because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.(AR) 19Â Having lost all sensitivity,(AS) they have given themselves over(AT) to sensuality(AU) so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
20Â That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21Â when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22Â You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off(AV) your old self,(AW) which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;(AX) 23Â to be made new in the attitude of your minds;(AY) 24Â and to put on(AZ) the new self,(BA) created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.(BB)
25Â Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully(BC) to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.(BD) 26Â âIn your anger do not sinâ[d]:(BE) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27Â and do not give the devil a foothold.(BF) 28Â Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,(BG) doing something useful with their own hands,(BH) that they may have something to share with those in need.(BI)
29Â Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,(BJ) but only what is helpful for building others up(BK) according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30Â And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,(BL) with whom you were sealed(BM) for the day of redemption.(BN) 31Â Get rid of(BO) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(BP) 32Â Be kind and compassionate to one another,(BQ) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(BR)

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
4Â I therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, appeal to and beg you to walk (lead a life) worthy of the [divine] calling to which you have been called [with behavior that is a credit to the summons to Godâs service,
2Â Living as becomes you] with complete lowliness of mind (humility) and meekness (unselfishness, gentleness, mildness), with patience, bearing with one another and making allowances because you love one another.
3Â Be eager and strive earnestly to guard and keep the harmony and oneness of [and produced by] the Spirit in the binding power of peace.
4Â [There is] one body and one Spiritâjust as there is also one hope [that belongs] to the calling you receivedâ
5Â [There is] one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6Â One God and Father of [us] all, Who is above all [Sovereign over all], pervading all and [living] in [us] all.
7Â Yet grace (Godâs unmerited favor) was given to each of us individually [not indiscriminately, but in different ways] in proportion to the measure of Christâs [rich and bounteous] gift.
8Â Therefore it is said, When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive [He led a train of [a]vanquished foes] and He bestowed gifts on men.(A)
9Â [But He ascended?] Now what can this, He ascended, mean but that He had previously descended from [the heights of] heaven into [the depths], the lower parts of the earth?
10Â He Who descended is the [very] same as He Who also has ascended high above all the heavens, that He [His presence] might fill all things (the whole universe, from the lowest to the highest).
11Â And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers.
12Â His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christâs body (the church),
13Â [That it might develop] until we all attain oneness in the faith and in the comprehension of the [[b]full and accurate] knowledge of the Son of God, that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood (the completeness of personality which is nothing less than the standard height of Christâs own perfection), the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him.
14Â So then, we may no longer be children, tossed [like ships] to and fro between chance gusts of teaching and wavering with every changing wind of doctrine, [the prey of] the cunning and cleverness of [c]unscrupulous men, [gamblers engaged] in every shifting form of trickery in inventing errors to mislead.
15Â Rather, let our lives lovingly [d]express truth [in all things, speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly]. Enfolded in love, let us grow up in every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
16Â For because of Him the whole body (the church, in all its various parts), closely joined and firmly knit together by the joints and ligaments with which it is supplied, when each part [with power adapted to its need] is working properly [in all its functions], grows to full maturity, building itself up in love.
17Â So this I say and solemnly testify in [the name of] the Lord [as in His presence], that you must no longer live as the heathen (the Gentiles) do in their perverseness [in the folly, vanity, and emptiness of their souls and the futility] of their minds.
18Â Their [e]moral understanding is darkened and their reasoning is beclouded. [They are] alienated (estranged, self-banished) from the life of God [with no share in it; this is] because of the ignorance (the want of knowledge and perception, the willful blindness) that is [f]deep-seated in them, due to their hardness of heart [to the insensitiveness of their moral nature].
19Â In their spiritual apathy they have become callous and past feeling and reckless and have abandoned themselves [a prey] to unbridled sensuality, eager and greedy to indulge in every form of impurity [that their depraved desires may suggest and demand].
20Â But you did not so learn Christ!
21Â Assuming that you have really heard Him and been taught by Him, as [all] Truth is in Jesus [embodied and personified in Him],
22Â Strip yourselves of your former nature [put off and discard your old unrenewed self] which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion;
23Â And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude],
24Â And put on the new nature (the regenerate self) created in Godâs image, [Godlike] in true righteousness and holiness.
25Â Therefore, rejecting all falsity and being done now with it, let everyone express the truth with his neighbor, for we are all parts of one body and members one of another.(B)
26Â When angry, do not sin; do not ever let your wrath (your exasperation, your fury or indignation) last until the sun goes down.
27Â Leave no [such] room or foothold for the devil [give no opportunity to him].
28Â Let the thief steal no more, but rather let him be industrious, making an honest living with his own hands, so that he may be able to give to those in need.
29Â Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (Godâs favor) to those who hear it.
30Â And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as Godâs own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).
31Â Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).
32Â And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4
New King James Version
Walk in Unity
4Â I, therefore, the prisoner [a]of the Lord, [b]beseech you to (A)walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2Â with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3Â endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit (B)in the bond of peace. 4Â (C)There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5Â (D)one Lord, (E)one faith, (F)one baptism; 6Â (G)one God and Father of all, who is above all, and (H)through all, and in [c]you all.
Spiritual Gifts
7Â But (I)to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christâs gift. 8Â Therefore He says:
(J)âWhen He ascended on high,
He led captivity captive,
And gave gifts to men.â
9Â (K)(Now this, âHe ascendedââwhat does it mean but that He also [d]first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10Â He who descended is also the One (L)who ascended far above all the heavens, (M)that He might fill all things.)
11Â And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12Â for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, (N)for the [e]edifying of (O)the body of Christ, 13Â till we all come to the unity of the faith (P)and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to (Q)a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14Â that we should no longer be (R)children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of (S)deceitful plotting, 15Â but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the (T)headâChristâ 16Â (U)from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
The New Man
17Â This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should (V)no longer walk as [f]the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18Â having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the (W)blindness of their heart; 19Â (X)who, being past feeling, (Y)have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20Â But you have not so learned Christ, 21Â if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22Â that you (Z)put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23Â and (AA)be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24Â and that you (AB)put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Do Not Grieve the Spirit
25Â Therefore, putting away lying, (AC)âLet each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,â for (AD)we are members of one another. 26Â (AE)âBe angry, and do not sinâ: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27Â (AF)nor give [g]place to the devil. 28Â Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather (AG)let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something (AH)to give him who has need. 29Â (AI)Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but (AJ)what is good for necessary [h]edification, (AK)that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30Â And (AL)do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Â (AM)Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, [i]clamor, and (AN)evil speaking be put away from you, (AO)with all malice. 32Â And (AP)be kind to one another, tenderhearted, (AQ)forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
