19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.(A)

Wives and Husbands

22 Wives,(B) submit[a](C) to your husbands(D) as to the Lord, 23 because the husband is the head of the wife(E) as Christ is the head(F) of the church. He is the Savior of the body.(G) 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives are to submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives,(H) just as Christ loved(I) the church and gave himself(J) for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her with the washing of water by the word. 27 He did this to present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless.(K) 28 In the same way, husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, 30 since we are members of his body.[c] 31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,(L) and the two will become one flesh.[d](M) 32 This mystery(N) is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.

Children and Parents

Children, obey(O) your parents in the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.[e][f](P) Fathers, don’t stir up anger(Q) in your children, but bring them up in the training(R) and instruction of the Lord.

Slaves and Masters

Slaves, obey your human[g] masters(S) with fear and trembling,(T) in the sincerity(U) of your heart, as you would Christ. Don’t work only while being watched, as people-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing God’s will(V) from your heart. Serve with a good attitude, as to the Lord and not to people,(W) knowing that whatever good each one does, slave or free, he will receive this back from the Lord. And masters, treat your slaves the same way, without threatening(X) them, because you know that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism(Y) with him.(Z)

Instructions for Christian Households(C)

21 Submit to one another(D) out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands(E) as you do to the Lord.(F) 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church,(G) his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands(H) in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives,(I) just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her(J) 26 to make her holy,(K) cleansing[a] her by the washing(L) with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself(M) as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.(N) 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives(O) as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body.(P) 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[b](Q) 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife(R) as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.(S) “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”[c](T)

Fathers,[d] do not exasperate your children;(U) instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.(V)

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect(W) and fear, and with sincerity of heart,(X) just as you would obey Christ.(Y) Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ,(Z) doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people,(AA) because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do,(AB) whether they are slave or free.

And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours(AC) is in heaven, and there is no favoritism(AD) with him.
