31 (A)Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 (B)Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, (C)forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Walk in Love

(D)Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And (E)walk in love, (F)as Christ loved us and (G)gave himself up for us, a (H)fragrant (I)offering and sacrifice to God.

But (J)sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness (K)must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be (L)no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, (M)which are out of place, but instead (N)let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that (O)everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous ((P)that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (Q)Let no one (R)deceive you with empty words, for because of these things (S)the wrath of God comes upon (T)the sons of disobedience. Therefore (U)do not become partners with them; for (V)at one time you were (W)darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. (X)Walk as children of light (for (Y)the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and (Z)try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 (AA)Take no part in the (AB)unfruitful (AC)works of darkness, but instead (AD)expose them. 12 For (AE)it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when (AF)anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

(AG)“Awake, O sleeper,
    and (AH)arise from the dead,
and (AI)Christ will shine on you.”

15 (AJ)Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 (AK)making the best use of the time, because (AL)the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what (AM)the will of the Lord is. 18 And (AN)do not get drunk with wine, for that is (AO)debauchery, but (AP)be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in (AQ)psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 (AR)giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father (AS)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 (AT)submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

31 Get rid of(A) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(B) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(C) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(D) Follow God’s example,(E) therefore, as dearly loved children(F) and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us(G) and gave himself up for us(H) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.(I)

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality,(J) or of any kind of impurity, or of greed,(K) because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk(L) or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.(M) For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater(N)—has any inheritance(O) in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a](P) Let no one deceive you(Q) with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath(R) comes on those who are disobedient.(S) Therefore do not be partners with them.

For you were once(T) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light(U) (for the fruit(V) of the light consists in all goodness,(W) righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.(X) 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,(Y) but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light(Z) becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,(AA)
    rise from the dead,(AB)
    and Christ will shine on you.”(AC)

15 Be very careful, then, how you live(AD)—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity,(AE) because the days are evil.(AF) 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.(AG) 18 Do not get drunk on wine,(AH) which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,(AI) 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.(AJ) Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks(AK) to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Instructions for Christian Households(AL)

Footnotes

  1. Ephesians 5:5 Or kingdom of the Messiah and God

31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
