Made Alive in Christ

2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,(A) 2 in which you used to live(B) when you followed the ways of this world(C) and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,(D) the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.(E) 3 All of us also lived among them at one time,(F) gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a](G) and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us,(H) God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions(I)—it is by grace you have been saved.(J) 6 And God raised us up with Christ(K) and seated us with him(L) in the heavenly realms(M) in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,(N) expressed in his kindness(O) to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace(P) you have been saved,(Q) through faith(R)—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works,(S) so that no one can boast.(T) 10 For we are God’s handiwork,(U) created(V) in Christ Jesus to do good works,(W) which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ

11 Therefore, remember that formerly(X) you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)(Y)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners(Z) to the covenants of the promise,(AA) without hope(AB) and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once(AC) were far away have been brought near(AD) by the blood of Christ.(AE)

14 For he himself is our peace,(AF) who has made the two groups one(AG) and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh(AH) the law with its commands and regulations.(AI) His purpose was to create in himself one(AJ) new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross,(AK) by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace(AL) to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.(AM) 18 For through him we both have access(AN) to the Father(AO) by one Spirit.(AP)

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,(AQ) but fellow citizens(AR) with God’s people and also members of his household,(AS) 20 built(AT) on the foundation(AU) of the apostles and prophets,(AV) with Christ Jesus himself(AW) as the chief cornerstone.(AX) 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple(AY) in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.(AZ)

2 Vocês estavam mortos em suas transgressões e pecados, 2 nos quais costumavam viver, quando seguiam a presente ordem[a] deste mundo e o príncipe do poder do ar, o espírito que agora está atuando nos que vivem na desobediência. 3 Anteriormente, todos nós também vivíamos entre eles, satisfazendo as vontades da nossa carne[b], seguindo os seus desejos e pensamentos. Como os outros, éramos por natureza merecedores da ira. 4 Todavia, Deus, que é rico em misericórdia, pelo grande amor com que nos amou, 5 deu-nos vida com Cristo, quando ainda estávamos mortos em transgressões — pela graça vocês são salvos. 6 Deus nos ressuscitou com Cristo e com ele nos fez assentar nos lugares celestiais em Cristo Jesus, 7 para mostrar, nas eras que hão de vir, a incomparável riqueza de sua graça, demonstrada em sua bondade para conosco em Cristo Jesus. 8 Pois vocês são salvos pela graça, por meio da fé, e isto não vem de vocês, é dom de Deus; 9 não por obras, para que ninguém se glorie. 10 Porque somos criação de Deus realizada em Cristo Jesus para fazermos boas obras, as quais Deus preparou antes para nós as praticarmos.

A Nova Humanidade em Cristo

11 Portanto, lembrem-se de que anteriormente vocês eram gentios[c] por nascimento[d] e chamados incircuncisão pelos que se chamam circuncisão, feita no corpo[e] por mãos humanas, e que 12 naquela época vocês estavam sem Cristo, separados da comunidade de Israel, sendo estrangeiros quanto às alianças da promessa, sem esperança e sem Deus no mundo. 13 Mas agora, em Cristo Jesus, vocês, que antes estavam longe, foram aproximados mediante o sangue de Cristo.

14 Pois ele é a nossa paz, o qual de ambos fez um e destruiu a barreira, o muro de inimizade, 15 anulando em seu corpo a Lei dos mandamentos expressa em ordenanças. O objetivo dele era criar em si mesmo, dos dois, um novo homem, fazendo a paz, 16 e reconciliar com Deus os dois em um corpo, por meio da cruz, pela qual ele destruiu a inimizade. 17 Ele veio e anunciou paz a vocês que estavam longe e paz aos que estavam perto, 18 pois por meio dele tanto nós como vocês temos acesso ao Pai, por um só Espírito.

19 Portanto, vocês já não são estrangeiros nem forasteiros, mas concidadãos dos santos e membros da família de Deus, 20 edificados sobre o fundamento dos apóstolos e dos profetas, tendo Jesus Cristo como pedra angular, 21 no qual todo o edifício é ajustado e cresce para tornar-se um santuário santo no Senhor. 22 Nele vocês também estão sendo edificados juntos, para se tornarem morada de Deus por seu Espírito.

A salvação é pela graça

2 E vos vivificou, estando vós mortos em ofensas e pecados, 2 em que, noutro tempo, andastes, segundo o curso deste mundo, segundo o príncipe das potestades do ar, do espírito que, agora, opera nos filhos da desobediência; 3 entre os quais todos nós também, antes, andávamos nos desejos da nossa carne, fazendo a vontade da carne e dos pensamentos; e éramos por natureza filhos da ira, como os outros também. 4 Mas Deus, que é riquíssimo em misericórdia, pelo seu muito amor com que nos amou, 5 estando nós ainda mortos em nossas ofensas, nos vivificou juntamente com Cristo (pela graça sois salvos), 6 e nos ressuscitou juntamente com ele, e nos fez assentar nos lugares celestiais, em Cristo Jesus; 7 para mostrar nos séculos vindouros as abundantes riquezas da sua graça, pela sua benignidade para conosco em Cristo Jesus. 8 Porque pela graça sois salvos, por meio da fé; e isso não vem de vós; é dom de Deus. 9 Não vem das obras, para que ninguém se glorie. 10 Porque somos feitura sua, criados em Cristo Jesus para as boas obras, as quais Deus preparou para que andássemos nelas.

Os gentios e os judeus são unidos por Deus mediante a cruz de Cristo

11 Portanto, lembrai-vos de que vós, noutro tempo, éreis gentios na carne e chamados incircuncisão pelos que, na carne, se chamam circuncisão feita pela mão dos homens; 12 que, naquele tempo, estáveis sem Cristo, separados da comunidade de Israel e estranhos aos concertos da promessa, não tendo esperança e sem Deus no mundo. 13 Mas, agora, em Cristo Jesus, vós, que antes estáveis longe, já pelo sangue de Cristo chegastes perto. 14 Porque ele é a nossa paz, o qual de ambos os povos fez um; e, derribando a parede de separação que estava no meio, 15 na sua carne, desfez a inimizade, isto é, a lei dos mandamentos, que consistia em ordenanças, para criar em si mesmo dos dois um novo homem, fazendo a paz, 16 e, pela cruz, reconciliar ambos com Deus em um corpo, matando com ela as inimizades. 17 E, vindo, ele evangelizou a paz a vós que estáveis longe e aos que estavam perto; 18 porque, por ele, ambos temos acesso ao Pai em um mesmo Espírito. 19 Assim que já não sois estrangeiros, nem forasteiros, mas concidadãos dos Santos e da família de Deus; 20 edificados sobre o fundamento dos apóstolos e dos profetas, de que Jesus Cristo é a principal pedra da esquina; 21 no qual todo o edifício, bem-ajustado, cresce para templo santo no Senhor, 22 no qual também vós juntamente sois edificados para morada de Deus no Espírito.
