You used to be dead because of your sins and acts of disobedience. You walked in the ways of the ‘olam hazeh and obeyed the Ruler of the Powers of the Air, who is still at work among the disobedient. Indeed, we all once lived this way — we followed the passions of our old nature and obeyed the wishes of our old nature and our own thoughts. In our natural condition we were headed for God’s wrath, just like everyone else.

But God is so rich in mercy and loves us with such intense love that, even when we were dead because of our acts of disobedience, he brought us to life along with the Messiah — it is by grace that you have been delivered. That is, God raised us up with the Messiah Yeshua and seated us with him in heaven, in order to exhibit in the ages to come how infinitely rich is his grace, how great is his kindness toward us who are united with the Messiah Yeshua. For you have been delivered by grace through trusting, and even this is not your accomplishment but God’s gift. You were not delivered by your own actions; therefore no one should boast. 10 For we are of God’s making, created in union with the Messiah Yeshua for a life of good actions already prepared by God for us to do.

11 Therefore, remember your former state: you Gentiles by birth — called the Uncircumcised by those who, merely because of an operation on their flesh, are called the Circumcised — 12 at that time had no Messiah. You were estranged from the national life of Isra’el. You were foreigners to the covenants embodying God’s promise. You were in this world without hope and without God.

13 But now, you who were once far off have been brought near through the shedding of the Messiah’s blood. 14 For he himself is our shalom — he has made us both one and has broken down the m’chitzah which divided us 15 by destroying in his own body the enmity occasioned by the Torah, with its commands set forth in the form of ordinances. He did this in order to create in union with himself from the two groups a single new humanity and thus make shalom, 16 and in order to reconcile to God both in a single body by being executed on a stake as a criminal and thus in himself killing that enmity.

17 Also, when he came, he announced as Good News shalom to you far off and shalom to those nearby,[a] 18 news that through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.

19 So then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers. On the contrary, you are fellow-citizens with God’s people and members of God’s family. 20 You have been built on the foundation of the emissaries and the prophets, with the cornerstone being Yeshua the Messiah himself. 21 In union with him the whole building is held together, and it is growing into a holy temple in union with the Lord. 22 Yes, in union with him, you yourselves are being built together into a spiritual dwelling-place for God!

Das neue Leben in Christus — eine Gabe der Gnade Gottes

— auch euch, die ihr tot wart durch Übertretungen und Sünden,

in denen ihr einst gelebt habt nach dem Lauf dieser Welt[a], gemäß dem Fürsten, der in der Luft herrscht, dem Geist, der jetzt in den Söhnen des Ungehorsams[b] wirkt;

unter ihnen führten auch wir alle einst unser Leben in den Begierden unseres Fleisches, indem wir den Willen[c] des Fleisches und der Gedanken taten; und wir waren von Natur Kinder des Zorns, wie auch die anderen.

Gott aber, der reich ist an Erbarmen, hat um seiner großen Liebe willen, mit der er uns geliebt hat,

auch uns, die wir tot waren durch die Übertretungen, mit dem Christus lebendig gemacht — aus Gnade seid ihr errettet! —

und hat uns mitauferweckt und mitversetzt in die himmlischen [Regionen] in Christus Jesus,

damit er in den kommenden Weltzeiten den überschwänglichen Reichtum seiner Gnade in Güte an uns erweise in Christus Jesus.

Denn aus Gnade seid ihr errettet durch den Glauben, und das nicht aus euch — Gottes Gabe ist es;

nicht aus Werken, damit niemand sich rühme.

10 Denn wir sind seine Schöpfung[d], erschaffen in Christus Jesus zu guten Werken, die Gott zuvor bereitet hat, damit wir in ihnen wandeln sollen.

Juden und Heiden mit Gott versöhnt und eins gemacht durch das Kreuz des Christus

11 Darum gedenkt daran, dass ihr, die ihr einst Heiden[e] im Fleisch wart und Unbeschnittene genannt wurdet von der sogenannten Beschneidung, die am Fleisch mit der Hand geschieht

12 — dass ihr in jener Zeit ohne Christus wart, ausgeschlossen von der Bürgerschaft Israels und fremd den Bündnissen der Verheißung; ihr hattet keine Hoffnung und wart ohne Gott in der Welt.

13 Jetzt aber, in Christus Jesus, seid ihr, die ihr einst fern wart, nahe gebracht worden durch das Blut des Christus.

14 Denn Er ist unser Friede, der aus beiden[f] eins gemacht und die Scheidewand des Zaunes[g] abgebrochen hat,

15 indem er in seinem Fleisch die Feindschaft, das Gesetz der Gebote in Satzungen, hinwegtat, um die zwei in sich selbst zu einem neuen Menschen zu schaffen und Frieden zu stiften,

16 und um die beiden in einem Leib mit Gott zu versöhnen durch das Kreuz, nachdem er durch dasselbe die Feindschaft getötet hatte.

17 Und er kam und verkündigte Frieden euch, den Fernen, und den Nahen;

18 denn durch ihn haben wir beide den Zutritt zu dem Vater in einem Geist.

Die Gemeinde als heiliger Tempel Gottes

19 So seid ihr nun nicht mehr Fremdlinge ohne Bürgerrecht und Gäste, sondern Mitbürger der Heiligen und Gottes Hausgenossen[h],

20 auferbaut auf der Grundlage der Apostel und Propheten, während Jesus Christus selbst der Eckstein ist,

21 in dem der ganze Bau, zusammengefügt, wächst zu einem heiligen Tempel im Herrn,

22 in dem auch ihr miterbaut werdet zu einer Wohnung Gottes im Geist[i].

Made Alive in Christ

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,(A) in which you used to live(B) when you followed the ways of this world(C) and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,(D) the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.(E) All of us also lived among them at one time,(F) gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a](G) and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us,(H) God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions(I)—it is by grace you have been saved.(J) And God raised us up with Christ(K) and seated us with him(L) in the heavenly realms(M) in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,(N) expressed in his kindness(O) to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace(P) you have been saved,(Q) through faith(R)—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works,(S) so that no one can boast.(T) 10 For we are God’s handiwork,(U) created(V) in Christ Jesus to do good works,(W) which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ

11 Therefore, remember that formerly(X) you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)(Y) 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners(Z) to the covenants of the promise,(AA) without hope(AB) and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once(AC) were far away have been brought near(AD) by the blood of Christ.(AE)

14 For he himself is our peace,(AF) who has made the two groups one(AG) and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh(AH) the law with its commands and regulations.(AI) His purpose was to create in himself one(AJ) new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross,(AK) by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace(AL) to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.(AM) 18 For through him we both have access(AN) to the Father(AO) by one Spirit.(AP)

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,(AQ) but fellow citizens(AR) with God’s people and also members of his household,(AS) 20 built(AT) on the foundation(AU) of the apostles and prophets,(AV) with Christ Jesus himself(AW) as the chief cornerstone.(AX) 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple(AY) in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.(AZ)
