¹⁶ above all, taking ^(A)the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

⁸ Be ^[a]sober, be ^[b]vigilant; ^[c]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. ⁹ Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

⁴ For ^(A)whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that ^(B)has overcome the world—^[a]our faith. ⁵ Who is he who overcomes the world, but ^(C)he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

God’s Covenant with Abram^(A)

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram ^(B)in a vision, saying, ^(C)“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your ^(D)shield, ^[a]your exceedingly ^(E)great reward.”

¹⁷ Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to ^(A)the heirs of promise ^(B)the ^[a]immutability of His counsel, ^[b]confirmed it by an oath, ¹⁸ that by two ^[c]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to ^(C)lie, we ^[d]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope ^(D)set before us.

Seeing the Invisible

¹⁶ Therefore we ^(A)do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is ^(B)being renewed day by day. ¹⁷ For ^(C)our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, ^18 (D)while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
