³¹ Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice.^(A)

⁸ But now you must get rid of all such things: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive^[a] language from your mouth.^(A)

² to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show every courtesy to everyone.^{(A) 3} For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one another.^(B)

2 Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander.^(A)

Hearing and Doing the Word

¹⁹ You must understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger,^(A)

¹⁹ Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be arrogant and lie about the truth. ¹⁵ This is not wisdom that comes down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish.^{(A) 16} For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind.^{(B) 17} But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.^{(C) 18} And the fruit of righteousness^[a] is sown in peace by those who make peace.^(D)

Friendship with the World

4 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? ² You want something and do not have it, so you commit murder. And you covet^[b] something and cannot obtain it, so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have because you do not ask.

²⁶ Be angry but do not sin;^[a] do not let the sun go down on your anger,

¹² We must not be like Cain, who was from the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous.
