⁸ For ^(A)by grace you have been saved ^(B)through faith; and ^[a]this is not of yourselves, it is ^(C)the gift of God; ^9 (D)not a result of works, so that ^(E)no one may boast.

² For if Abraham was justified ^[a]by works, he has something to boast about; but ^(A)not ^[b]before God. ³ For what does the Scripture say? “^(B)Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” ⁴ Now to the one who ^(C)works, the wages are not credited as a favor, but as what is due. ⁵ But to the one who does not work, but ^(D)believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,

⁴ But when the ^(A)kindness of ^(B)God our Savior and His love for mankind ^(C)appeared, ^5 (D)He saved us, ^(E)not on the basis of deeds which we did in righteousness, but ^(F)in accordance with His mercy, by the ^(G)washing of regeneration and ^(H)renewing by the Holy Spirit, ^6 (I)whom He ^(J)richly poured out upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that being justified by His grace we would be made ^(K)heirs ^[a]according to the hope of eternal life.
