Unidad en el cuerpo de Cristo
4 Por eso yo, que estoy preso por la causa del Señor, les ruego que vivan de una manera digna del llamamiento que han recibido, 2 siempre humildes y amables, pacientes, tolerantes unos con otros en amor. 3 Esfuércense por mantener la unidad del Espíritu mediante el vínculo de la paz. 4 Hay un solo cuerpo y un solo Espíritu, así como también fueron llamados a una sola esperanza; 5 un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo; 6 un solo Dios y Padre de todos, que está sobre todos y por medio de todos y en todos.
7 Pero a cada uno de nosotros se nos ha dado gracia en la medida en que Cristo ha repartido los dones. 8 Por esto dice:
«Cuando ascendió a lo alto,
se llevó consigo a los cautivos
y dio dones a los hombres».[a]
9 ¿Qué quiere decir eso de que «ascendió», sino que también descendió a las regiones bajas de la tierra? 10 El que descendió es el mismo que ascendió por encima de todos los cielos, para llenarlo todo. 11 Él mismo constituyó a unos como apóstoles; a otros, profetas; a otros, evangelistas; y a otros, pastores y maestros, 12 a fin de capacitar al pueblo de Dios para la obra de servicio, para edificar el cuerpo de Cristo. 13 De este modo, todos llegaremos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a una humanidad perfecta que se conforme a la plena estatura de Cristo.
14 Así ya no seremos niños, zarandeados por las olas y llevados de aquí para allá por todo viento de enseñanza y por la astucia y las artimañas de quienes emplean métodos engañosos. 15 Más bien, al vivir la verdad con amor, creceremos hasta ser en todo como aquel que es la cabeza, es decir, Cristo. 16 Por su acción todo el cuerpo crece y se edifica en amor, sostenido y ajustado por todos los ligamentos, según la actividad propia de cada miembro.
Vivan como hijos de luz
17 Así que les digo esto e insisto en el Señor: no vivan más con pensamientos frívolos como los paganos. 18 A causa de la ignorancia que los domina y por la dureza de sus corazones, estos tienen oscurecido el entendimiento y están alejados de la vida que proviene de Dios. 19 Han perdido toda vergüenza, se han entregado a la inmoralidad y no se sacian de cometer toda clase de actos indecentes.
20 No fue esta la enseñanza que ustedes recibieron acerca de Cristo, 21 si de veras se les habló y enseñó de Jesús según la verdad que está en él. 22 Con respecto a la vida que antes llevaban, se les enseñó que debían quitarse el ropaje de la vieja naturaleza, la cual está corrompida por los deseos engañosos; 23 ser renovados en la actitud de su mente; 24 y ponerse el ropaje de la nueva naturaleza, creada a imagen de Dios, en verdadera justicia y santidad.
25 Por lo tanto, dejando la mentira, hable cada uno a su prójimo con la verdad, porque todos somos miembros de un mismo cuerpo. 26 «Si se enojan, no pequen».[b] No permitan que el enojo les dure hasta la puesta del sol 27 ni den cabida al diablo. 28 El que robaba, que no robe más, sino que trabaje honradamente con las manos para tener qué compartir con los necesitados.
29 Eviten toda conversación obscena. Por el contrario, que sus palabras contribuyan a la necesaria edificación y sean de bendición para quienes escuchan. 30 No agravien al Espíritu Santo de Dios con el que fueron sellados para el día de la redención. 31 Abandonen toda amargura, ira y enojo, gritos y calumnias y toda forma de malicia. 32 Más bien, sean bondadosos y compasivos unos con otros y perdónense mutuamente, así como Dios los perdonó a ustedes en Cristo.

La unidad del Espíritu
4 Yo pues, preso en el Señor, os ruego que andéis como es digno de la vocación con que fuisteis llamados, 2 con toda humildad y mansedumbre, soportándoos con paciencia los unos a los otros en amor,(A) 3 solícitos en guardar la unidad del Espíritu en el vínculo de la paz; 4 un cuerpo, y un Espíritu, como fuisteis también llamados en una misma esperanza de vuestra vocación; 5 un Señor, una fe, un bautismo, 6 un Dios y Padre de todos, el cual es sobre todos, y por todos, y en todos. 7 Pero a cada uno de nosotros fue dada la gracia conforme a la medida del don de Cristo. 8 Por lo cual dice:
Subiendo a lo alto, llevó cautiva la cautividad,
Y dio dones a los hombres.(B)
9 Y eso de que subió, ¿qué es, sino que también había descendido primero a las partes más bajas de la tierra? 10 El que descendió, es el mismo que también subió por encima de todos los cielos para llenarlo todo. 11 Y él mismo constituyó a unos, apóstoles; a otros, profetas; a otros, evangelistas; a otros, pastores y maestros, 12 a fin de perfeccionar a los santos para la obra del ministerio, para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo, 13 hasta que todos lleguemos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a un varón perfecto, a la medida de la estatura de la plenitud de Cristo; 14 para que ya no seamos niños fluctuantes, llevados por doquiera de todo viento de doctrina, por estratagema de hombres que para engañar emplean con astucia las artimañas del error, 15 sino que siguiendo la verdad en amor, crezcamos en todo en aquel que es la cabeza, esto es, Cristo, 16 de quien todo el cuerpo, bien concertado y unido entre sí por todas las coyunturas que se ayudan mutuamente, según la actividad propia de cada miembro, recibe su crecimiento para ir edificándose en amor.(C)
La nueva vida en Cristo
17 Esto, pues, digo y requiero en el Señor: que ya no andéis como los otros gentiles, que andan en la vanidad de su mente, 18 teniendo el entendimiento entenebrecido, ajenos de la vida de Dios por la ignorancia que en ellos hay, por la dureza de su corazón; 19 los cuales, después que perdieron toda sensibilidad, se entregaron a la lascivia para cometer con avidez toda clase de impureza. 20 Mas vosotros no habéis aprendido así a Cristo, 21 si en verdad le habéis oído, y habéis sido por él enseñados, conforme a la verdad que está en Jesús. 22 En cuanto a la pasada manera de vivir, despojaos del viejo hombre,(D) que está viciado conforme a los deseos engañosos, 23 y renovaos en el espíritu de vuestra mente, 24 y vestíos del nuevo hombre,(E) creado según Dios(F) en la justicia y santidad de la verdad.
25 Por lo cual, desechando la mentira, hablad verdad cada uno con su prójimo;(G) porque somos miembros los unos de los otros. 26 Airaos, pero no pequéis;(H) no se ponga el sol sobre vuestro enojo, 27 ni deis lugar al diablo. 28 El que hurtaba, no hurte más, sino trabaje, haciendo con sus manos lo que es bueno, para que tenga qué compartir con el que padece necesidad. 29 Ninguna palabra corrompida salga de vuestra boca, sino la que sea buena para la necesaria edificación, a fin de dar gracia a los oyentes. 30 Y no contristéis al Espíritu Santo de Dios, con el cual fuisteis sellados para el día de la redención. 31 Quítense de vosotros toda amargura, enojo, ira, gritería y maledicencia, y toda malicia. 32 Antes sed benignos unos con otros, misericordiosos, perdonándoos unos a otros, como Dios también os perdonó a vosotros en Cristo.(I)

4 I beg you—I, a prisoner here in jail for serving the Lord—to live and act in a way worthy of those who have been chosen for such wonderful blessings as these. 2 Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. 3 Try always to be led along together by the Holy Spirit and so be at peace with one another.
4 We are all parts of one body, we have the same Spirit, and we have all been called to the same glorious future. 5 For us there is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 and we all have the same God and Father who is over us all and in us all, and living through every part of us. 7 However, Christ has given each of us special abilities—whatever he wants us to have out of his rich storehouse of gifts.
8 The psalmist tells about this, for he says that when Christ returned triumphantly to heaven after his resurrection and victory over Satan, he gave generous gifts to men. 9 Notice that it says he returned to heaven. This means that he had first come down from the heights of heaven, far down to the lowest parts of the earth. 10 The same one who came down is the one who went back up, that he might fill all things everywhere with himself, from the very lowest to the very highest.
11 Some of us have been given special ability as apostles; to others he has given the gift of being able to preach well; some have special ability in winning people to Christ, helping them to trust him as their Savior; still others have a gift for caring for God’s people as a shepherd does his sheep, leading and teaching them in the ways of God.
12 Why is it that he gives us these special abilities to do certain things best? It is that God’s people will be equipped to do better work for him, building up the Church, the body of Christ, to a position of strength and maturity; 13 until finally we all believe alike about our salvation and about our Savior, God’s Son, and all become full-grown in the Lord—yes, to the point of being filled full with Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth. 15-16 Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times—speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly[a]—and so become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly, and each part in its own special way helps the other parts, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.
17-18 Let me say this, then, speaking for the Lord: Live no longer as the unsaved do, for they are blinded and confused. Their closed hearts are full of darkness; they are far away from the life of God because they have shut their minds against him, and they cannot understand his ways. 19 They don’t care anymore about right and wrong and have given themselves over to impure ways. They stop at nothing, being driven by their evil minds and reckless lusts.
20 But that isn’t the way Christ taught you! 21 If you have really heard his voice and learned from him the truths concerning himself, 22 then throw off your old evil nature—the old you that was a partner in your evil ways—rotten through and through, full of lust and sham.
23 Now your attitudes and thoughts must all be constantly changing for the better. 24 Yes, you must be a new and different person, holy and good. Clothe yourself with this new nature.
25 Stop lying to each other; tell the truth, for we are parts of each other and when we lie to each other we are hurting ourselves. 26 If you are angry, don’t sin by nursing your grudge. Don’t let the sun go down with you still angry—get over it quickly; 27 for when you are angry, you give a mighty foothold to the devil.
28 If anyone is stealing he must stop it and begin using those hands of his for honest work so he can give to others in need. 29 Don’t use bad language. Say only what is good and helpful to those you are talking to, and what will give them a blessing.
30 Don’t cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way you live. Remember, he is the one who marks you to be present on that day when salvation from sin will be complete.[b]
31 Stop being mean, bad-tempered, and angry. Quarreling, harsh words, and dislike of others should have no place in your lives. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you because you belong to Christ.

Unity and Maturity in the Body of Christ
4 As a prisoner(A) for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy(B) of the calling(C) you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another(D) in love.(E) 3 Make every effort to keep the unity(F) of the Spirit through the bond of peace.(G) 4 There is one body(H) and one Spirit,(I) just as you were called to one hope when you were called(J); 5 one Lord,(K) one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all,(L) who is over all and through all and in all.(M)
7 But to each one of us(N) grace(O) has been given(P) as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it[a] says:
9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[c]? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended(S) higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)(T) 11 So Christ himself gave(U) the apostles,(V) the prophets,(W) the evangelists,(X) the pastors and teachers,(Y) 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ(Z) may be built up(AA) 13 until we all reach unity(AB) in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God(AC) and become mature,(AD) attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.(AE)
14 Then we will no longer be infants,(AF) tossed back and forth by the waves,(AG) and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.(AH) 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love,(AI) we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head,(AJ) that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows(AK) and builds itself up(AL) in love,(AM) as each part does its work.
Instructions for Christian Living
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer(AN) live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.(AO) 18 They are darkened in their understanding(AP) and separated from the life of God(AQ) because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.(AR) 19 Having lost all sensitivity,(AS) they have given themselves over(AT) to sensuality(AU) so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off(AV) your old self,(AW) which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;(AX) 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;(AY) 24 and to put on(AZ) the new self,(BA) created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.(BB)
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully(BC) to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.(BD) 26 “In your anger do not sin”[d]:(BE) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.(BF) 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,(BG) doing something useful with their own hands,(BH) that they may have something to share with those in need.(BI)
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,(BJ) but only what is helpful for building others up(BK) according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,(BL) with whom you were sealed(BM) for the day of redemption.(BN) 31 Get rid of(BO) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(BP) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(BQ) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(BR)
