Gratuità della salvezza nel Cristo
2 Anche voi eravate morti per le vostre colpe e i vostri peccati, 2 nei quali un tempo viveste alla maniera di questo mondo, seguendo il principe delle potenze dell'aria, quello spirito che ora opera negli uomini ribelli. 3 Nel numero di quei ribelli, del resto, siamo vissuti anche tutti noi, un tempo, con i desideri della nostra carne, seguendo le voglie della carne e i desideri cattivi; ed eravamo per natura meritevoli d'ira, come gli altri. 4 Ma Dio, ricco di misericordia, per il grande amore con il quale ci ha amati, 5 da morti che eravamo per i peccati, ci ha fatti rivivere con Cristo: per grazia infatti siete stati salvati. 6 Con lui ci ha anche risuscitati e ci ha fatti sedere nei cieli, in Cristo Gesù, 7 per mostrare nei secoli futuri la straordinaria ricchezza della sua grazia mediante la sua bontà verso di noi in Cristo Gesù. 8 Per questa grazia infatti siete salvi mediante la fede; e ciò non viene da voi, ma è dono di Dio; 9 né viene dalle opere, perché nessuno possa vantarsene. 10 Siamo infatti opera sua, creati in Cristo Gesù per le opere buone che Dio ha predisposto perché noi le praticassimo.
Riconciliazione dei Giudei e dei pagani fra di loro e con Dio
11 Perciò ricordatevi che un tempo voi, pagani per nascita, chiamati incirconcisi da quelli che si dicono circoncisi perché tali sono nella carne per mano di uomo, 12 ricordatevi che in quel tempo eravate senza Cristo, esclusi dalla cittadinanza d'Israele, estranei ai patti della promessa, senza speranza e senza Dio in questo mondo. 13 Ora invece, in Cristo Gesù, voi che un tempo eravate i lontani siete diventati i vicini grazie al sangue di Cristo. 14 Egli infatti è la nostra pace, colui che ha fatto dei due un popolo solo, abbattendo il muro di separazione che era frammezzo, cioè l'inimicizia, 15 annullando, per mezzo della sua carne, la legge fatta di prescrizioni e di decreti, per creare in se stesso, dei due, un solo uomo nuovo, facendo la pace, 16 e per riconciliare tutti e due con Dio in un solo corpo, per mezzo della croce, distruggendo in se stesso l'inimicizia. 17 Egli è venuto perciò ad annunziare pace a voi che eravate lontani e pace a coloro che erano vicini. 18 Per mezzo di lui possiamo presentarci, gli uni e gli altri, al Padre in un solo Spirito.
19 Così dunque voi non siete più stranieri né ospiti, ma siete concittadini dei santi e familiari di Dio, 20 edificati sopra il fondamento degli apostoli e dei profeti, e avendo come pietra angolare lo stesso Cristo Gesù. 21 In lui ogni costruzione cresce ben ordinata per essere tempio santo nel Signore; 22 in lui anche voi insieme con gli altri venite edificati per diventare dimora di Dio per mezzo dello Spirito.

2 Egli ha vivificato anche voi, che eravate morti nei falli e nei peccati,
2 nei quali già camminaste, seguendo il corso di questo mondo, secondo il principe della potestà dell'aria, dello spirito che al presente opera nei figli della disubbidienza,
3 fra i quali anche noi tutti un tempo vivemmo nelle concupiscenze della nostra carne, adempiendo i desideri della carne e della mente, ed eravamo per natura figli d'ira, come anche gli altri.
4 Ma Dio, che è ricco in misericordia per il suo grande amore con il quale ci ha amati,
5 anche quando eravamo morti nei falli, ci ha vivificati con Cristo (voi siete salvati per grazia),
6 e ci ha risuscitati con lui e con lui ci ha fatti sedere nei luoghi celesti in Cristo Gesú,
7 per mostrare nelle età che verranno le eccellenti ricchezze della sua grazia con benignità verso di noi in Cristo Gesú.
8 Voi infatti siete stati salvati per grazia, mediante la fede, e ciò non viene da voi, è il dono di Dio,
9 non per opere, perché nessuno si glori.
10 Noi infatti siamo opera sua, creati in Cristo Gesú per le buone opere che Dio ha precedentemente preparato, perché le compiamo.
11 Perciò ricordatevi che un tempo voi gentili di nascita, chiamati incirconcisi da quelli che si dicono circoncisi, perché tali sono stati fatti nella carne per mano d'uomo,
12 eravate in quel tempo senza Cristo, estranei dalla cittadinanza d'Israele e estranei ai patti della promessa, non avendo speranza ed essendo senza Dio nel mondo.
13 Ma ora, in Cristo Gesú, voi che un tempo eravate lontani, siete stati avvicinati per mezzo del sangue di Cristo.
14 Egli infatti è la nostra pace, colui che ha fatto dei due popoli uno e ha demolito il muro di separazione,
15 avendo abolito nella sua carne l'inimicizia, la legge dei comandamenti fatta di prescrizioni, per creare in se stesso dei due un solo uomo nuovo, facendo la pace,
16 e per riconciliare a ambedue con Dio in un sol corpo per mezzo della croce, avendo ucciso l'inimicizia in se stesso.
17 Ed egli venne per annunziare la pace a voi che eravate lontani e a quelli che erano vicini,
18 poiché per mezzo di lui abbiamo entrambi accesso al Padre in uno stesso Spirito.
19 Voi dunque non siete piú forestieri né ospiti, ma concittadini dei santi e membri della famiglia di Dio,
20 edificati sul fondamento degli apostoli e dei profeti, essendo Gesú Cristo stesso la pietra angolare,
21 su cui tutto l'edificio ben collegato cresce per essere un tempio santo nel Signore,
22 nel quale anche voi siete insieme edificati per essere una dimora di Dio nello Spirito.

2 Once you were under God’s curse, doomed forever for your sins. 2 You went along with the crowd and were just like all the others, full of sin, obeying Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air, who is at work right now in the hearts of those who are against the Lord. 3 All of us used to be just as they are, our lives expressing the evil within us, doing every wicked thing that our passions or our evil thoughts might lead us into. We started out bad, being born with evil natures, and were under God’s anger just like everyone else.
4 But God is so rich in mercy; he loved us so much 5 that even though we were spiritually dead and doomed by our sins, he gave us back our lives again[a] when he raised Christ from the dead—only by his undeserved favor have we ever been saved— 6 and lifted us up from the grave into glory along with Christ, where we sit with him in the heavenly realms—all because of what Christ Jesus did. 7 And now God can always point to us as examples of how very, very rich his kindness is, as shown in all he has done for us through Jesus Christ.
8 Because of his kindness, you have been saved through trusting Christ. And even trusting is not of yourselves;[b] it too is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good we have done, so none of us can take any credit for it. 10 It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others.
11 Never forget that once you were heathen and that you were called godless and “unclean” by the Jews. (But their hearts, too, were still unclean, even though they were going through the ceremonies and rituals of the godly, for they circumcised themselves as a sign of godliness.) 12 Remember that in those days you were living utterly apart from Christ; you were enemies of God’s children, and he had promised you no help. You were lost, without God, without hope.
13 But now you belong to Christ Jesus, and though you once were far away from God, now you have been brought very near to him because of what Jesus Christ has done for you with his blood.
14 For Christ himself is our way of peace. He has made peace between us Jews and you Gentiles by making us all one family,[c] breaking down the wall of contempt that used to separate us. 15 By his death he ended the angry resentment between us, caused by the Jewish laws that favored the Jews and excluded the Gentiles, for he died to annul that whole system of Jewish laws. Then he took the two groups that had been opposed to each other and made them parts of himself; thus he fused us together to become one new person, and at last there was peace. 16 As parts of the same body, our anger against each other has disappeared, for both of us have been reconciled to God. And so the feud ended at last at the cross. 17 And he has brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were very far away from him, and to us Jews who were near. 18 Now all of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, may come to God the Father with the Holy Spirit’s help because of what Christ has done for us.
19 Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family, citizens of God’s country, and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.
20 What a foundation you stand on now: the apostles and the prophets; and the cornerstone of the building is Jesus Christ himself! 21 We who believe are carefully joined together with Christ as parts of a beautiful, constantly growing temple for God. 22 And you also are joined with him and with each other by the Spirit and are part of this dwelling place of God.

2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,(A) 2 in which you used to live(B) when you followed the ways of this world(C) and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,(D) the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.(E) 3 All of us also lived among them at one time,(F) gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a](G) and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us,(H) God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions(I)—it is by grace you have been saved.(J) 6 And God raised us up with Christ(K) and seated us with him(L) in the heavenly realms(M) in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,(N) expressed in his kindness(O) to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace(P) you have been saved,(Q) through faith(R)—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works,(S) so that no one can boast.(T) 10 For we are God’s handiwork,(U) created(V) in Christ Jesus to do good works,(W) which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ
11 Therefore, remember that formerly(X) you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)(Y)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners(Z) to the covenants of the promise,(AA) without hope(AB) and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once(AC) were far away have been brought near(AD) by the blood of Christ.(AE)
14 For he himself is our peace,(AF) who has made the two groups one(AG) and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh(AH) the law with its commands and regulations.(AI) His purpose was to create in himself one(AJ) new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross,(AK) by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace(AL) to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.(AM) 18 For through him we both have access(AN) to the Father(AO) by one Spirit.(AP)
19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,(AQ) but fellow citizens(AR) with God’s people and also members of his household,(AS) 20 built(AT) on the foundation(AU) of the apostles and prophets,(AV) with Christ Jesus himself(AW) as the chief cornerstone.(AX) 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple(AY) in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.(AZ)
