Nytt liv i fellesskapet med Kristus

2 Det var en tid da dere var åndelig døde[a] på grunn av deres ulydighet og synder. 2 Dere levde på samme vis som alle andre her i verden. Dere syndet og fulgte Satan, høvdingen over de onde åndene.[b] Han er den åndemakt som nå hersker i dem som nekter å være lydige mot Gud. 3 På den måten levde vi alle tidligere. Vi fulgte våre menneskelige impulser og lot begjæret i kroppen og våre egne tanker styre oss. Ja, på grunn av vår menneskelige natur var vi på vei til å bli rammet av Guds dom akkurat som alle andre.

4-5 Men vår kjærlige Gud viste sin store medfølelse med oss. Til tross for at vi var åndelig døde på grunn av vår ulydighet, elsket han oss så høyt, at han gjorde oss levende med Kristus. Ja, det er bare på grunn av at Gud viste oss nåde at vi er frelst. 6 Han har vakt oss opp fra de døde sammen med Kristus og har gitt oss plass i himmelen, etter som vi lever i fellesskap med Jesus Kristus. 7 På grunn av dette fellesskapet vil Gud i all evighet vise oss sin uendelig store kjærlighet og godhet.

8 Dere er altså frelst fordi Gud i sin godhet tilga dere på grunn av troen på Kristus. Frelsen er en gave fra Gud og har ikke noe å gjøre med dere selv. 9 Den er ikke en belønning for gode gjerninger, og derfor kan heller ingen skryte over sin frelse. 10 Det er Gud selv som har gjort oss til det vi er. Gjennom vårt fellesskap med Jesus Kristus har han forandret oss til nye personer, som er beredt til å gjøre gode gjerninger som Gud fra begynnelsen planla at vi som tilhører ham skulle være opptatt av.

Alle er ett i Kristus

11-12 Husk derfor på hvilken håpløs situasjon dere befant dere i, før dere lærte Kristus å kjenne. Etter som dere tilhører folkeslag som ikke regnes som jøder, kalte jødene dere for ”dem som ikke er omskåret”. Jødene var stolte over sin seremoni med å omskjære alle gutter, selv om denne seremonien aldri kunne forvandle hjertene på noen. På den tiden tilhørte dere ikke Guds eget folk. Den pakten Gud hadde inngått med Israels folk, gjaldt ikke dere, og dere hadde ingen del i de løftene han hadde gitt. Nei, dere hadde ikke noe håp om frelse, og dere levde uten Gud her i verden. 13 Men nå får dere, som en gang var langt borte fra Gud, tilhøre hans eget folk takket være fellesskapet med Jesus Kristus, han som ofret sitt blod for dere.

14 Kristus har nemlig stiftet fred mellom jødene, og dere som ikke er jøder, ved å gjøre oss til ett folk. Gjennom det å dø for oss, rev han ned den muren av fiendskap som reiste seg mellom oss. 15-16 Ja, han døde på korset for oss og tok straffen vår på seg. Ved dette ble Moseloven[c] med alle sine bud og forskrifter ikke lenger veien til frelse. Hans mål var å stifte fred mellom jøder, og de som ikke er jøder, gjennom det å forene dem med seg selv og skape et nytt menneske, en ny kropp, som er menigheten. Når vi nå er lemmer på den samme kroppen, har fiendskapet mellom oss forsvunnet, etter som vi alle er forsonet med Gud og er vennene hans. 17 Kristus kom med det glade budskapet om fred for dere som var langt borte fra Gud, og fred for oss som er jøder og kjente Gud. 18 Nå kan vi alle, både jøder og de som ikke er jøder, komme fram for Gud, vår Far, ved hjelp av en og samme Ånd, på grunn av det som Kristus har gjort for oss.

19 Altså er dere ikke lenger gjester og fremmede. Nei, dere får være Guds eget folk sammen med alle som tilhører Gud. Dere er medlemmer i Guds store familie.

20 Sammen er vi, billedlig talt, et hus som er bygget på ett og samme fundament. Denne grunnvollen er undervisningen som Jesu[d] utsendinger har formidlet, og budskapet som profetene[e] bar fram fra Gud. Huset blir holdt oppe[f] av Jesus Kristus selv. 21 Det er Kristus som sammenføyer hele huset, slik at det reiser seg som et hellig tempel for Herren Gud. Mursteinene er alle vi som lever i fellesskap med Herren. 22 Ja, gjennom det som Jesus gjorde, kan også dere bli en del av denne bygningen der Guds Ånd bor.

2 Også eder har han gjort levende, I som var døde ved eders overtredelser og synder,

2 som I fordum vandret i efter denne verdens løp, efter høvdingen over luftens makter, den ånd som nu er virksom i vantroens barn,

3 blandt hvilke også vi alle fordum vandret i vårt kjøds lyster, idet vi gjorde kjødets og tankenes vilje, og vi var av naturen vredens barn likesom de andre.

4 Men Gud, som er rik på miskunn, har for sin store kjærlighets skyld som han elsket oss med,

5 gjort oss levende med Kristus, enda vi var døde ved våre overtredelser - av nåde er I frelst -

6 og opvakt oss med ham og satt oss med ham i himmelen, i Kristus Jesus,

7 forat han i de kommende tider kunde vise sin nådes overvettes rikdom i godhet mot oss i Kristus Jesus.

8 For av nåde er I frelst, ved tro, og det ikke av eder selv, det er Guds gave,

12 at I på den tid stod utenfor Kristus, utelukket fra Israels borgerrett og fremmede for paktene med deres løfte, uten håp og uten Gud i verden;

13 men nu, i Kristus Jesus, er I som fordum var langt borte, kommet nær til ved Kristi blod.

14 For han er vår fred, han som gjorde de to til ett og nedrev gjerdets skillevegg, fiendskapet,

15 idet han ved sitt kjød avskaffet den lov som kom med bud og forskrifter, forat han ved sig selv kunde skape de to til ett nytt menneske, idet han gjorde fred,

16 og forlike dem begge i ett legeme med Gud ved korset, idet han på dette drepte fiendskapet.

17 Og han kom og forkynte fred for eder som var langt borte, og fred for dem som var nær ved;

18 for ved ham har vi begge adgang til Faderen i en Ånd.

19 Så er I da ikke lenger fremmede og utlendinger, men I er de helliges medborgere og Guds husfolk,

20 I som er bygget op på apostlenes og profetenes grunnvoll, mens hjørnestenen er Kristus Jesus selv,

21 i hvem hver bygning føies sammen og vokser til et hellig tempel i Herren,

22 i hvem også I bygges op med de andre til en Guds bolig i Ånden.

2 And you [He made alive], when you were dead (slain) by [your] trespasses and sins

2 In which at one time you walked [habitually]. You were following the course and fashion of this world [were under the sway of the tendency of this present age], following the prince of the power of the air. [You were obedient to and under the control of] the [demon] spirit that still constantly works in the sons of disobedience [the careless, the rebellious, and the unbelieving, who go against the purposes of God].

3 Among these we as well as you once lived and conducted ourselves in the passions of our flesh [our behavior governed by our corrupt and sensual nature], obeying the impulses of the flesh and the thoughts of the mind [our cravings dictated by our senses and our dark imaginings]. We were then by nature children of [God’s] wrath and heirs of [His] indignation, like the rest of mankind.

4 But God—so rich is He in His mercy! Because of and in order to satisfy the great and wonderful and intense love with which He loved us,

5 Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace (His favor and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved ([a]delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation).

6 And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us [b]joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

7 He did this that He might clearly demonstrate through the ages to come the immeasurable (limitless, surpassing) riches of His free grace (His unmerited favor) in [His] kindness and goodness of heart toward us in Christ Jesus.

8 For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved ([c]delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God;

9 Not because of works [not the fulfillment of the Law’s demands], lest any man should boast. [It is not the result of what anyone can possibly do, so no one can pride himself in it or take glory to himself.]

10 For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), [d]recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].

11 Therefore, remember that at one time you were Gentiles (heathens) in the flesh, called Uncircumcision by those who called themselves Circumcision, [itself a [e]mere mark] in the flesh made by human hands.

12 [Remember] that you were at that time separated (living apart) from Christ [excluded from all part in Him], utterly estranged and outlawed from the rights of Israel as a nation, and strangers with no share in the sacred compacts of the [Messianic] promise [with no knowledge of or right in God’s agreements, His covenants]. And you had no hope (no promise); you were in the world without God.

13 But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were [so] far away, through (by, in) the blood of Christ have been brought near.

14 For He is [Himself] our peace (our bond of unity and harmony). He has made us both [Jew and Gentile] one [body], and has broken down (destroyed, abolished) the hostile dividing wall between us,

15 By abolishing in His [own crucified] flesh the enmity [caused by] the Law with its decrees and ordinances [which He annulled]; that He from the two might create in Himself one new man [one new quality of humanity out of the two], so making peace.

16 And [He designed] to reconcile to God both [Jew and Gentile, united] in a single body by means of His cross, thereby killing the mutual enmity and bringing the feud to an end.

17 And He came and preached the glad tidings of peace to you who were afar off and [peace] to those who were near.(A)

18 For it is through Him that we both [whether far off or near] now have an introduction (access) by one [Holy] Spirit to the Father [so that we are able to approach Him].

19 Therefore you are no longer outsiders (exiles, migrants, and aliens, excluded from the rights of citizens), but you now share citizenship with the saints (God’s own people, consecrated and set apart for Himself); and you belong to God’s [own] household.

20 You are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself the chief Cornerstone.

21 In Him the whole structure is joined (bound, welded) together harmoniously, and it continues to rise (grow, increase) into a holy temple in the Lord [a sanctuary dedicated, consecrated, and sacred to the presence of the Lord].

22 In Him [and in fellowship with one another] you yourselves also are being built up [into this structure] with the rest, to form a fixed abode (dwelling place) of God in (by, through) the Spirit.

Saved from sin to life

2 At one time you were like a dead person because of the things you did wrong and your offenses against God. 2 You used to live like people of this world. You followed the rule of a destructive spiritual power. This is the spirit of disobedience to God’s will that is now at work in persons whose lives are characterized by disobedience. 3 At one time you were like those persons. All of you used to do whatever felt good and whatever you thought you wanted so that you were children headed for punishment just like everyone else.

4-5 However, God is rich in mercy. He brought us to life with Christ while we were dead as a result of those things that we did wrong. He did this because of the great love that he has for us. You are saved by God’s grace! 6 And God raised us up and seated us in the heavens with Christ Jesus. 7 God did this to show future generations the greatness of his grace by the goodness that God has shown us in Christ Jesus.

8 You are saved by God’s grace because of your faith.[a] This salvation is God’s gift. It’s not something you possessed. 9 It’s not something you did that you can be proud of. 10 Instead, we are God’s accomplishment, created in Christ Jesus to do good things. God planned for these good things to be the way that we live our lives.

The reconciliation of God’s people

11 So remember that once you were Gentiles by physical descent, who were called “uncircumcised” by Jews who are physically circumcised. 12 At that time you were without Christ. You were aliens rather than citizens of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of God’s promise. In this world you had no hope and no God. 13 But now, thanks to Christ Jesus, you who once were so far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14 Christ is our peace. He made both Jews and Gentiles into one group. With his body, he broke down the barrier of hatred that divided us. 15 He canceled the detailed rules of the Law so that he could create one new person out of the two groups, making peace. 16 He reconciled them both as one body to God by the cross, which ended the hostility to God.

17 When he came, he announced the good news of peace to you who were far away from God and to those who were near. 18 We both have access to the Father through Christ by the one Spirit. 19 So now you are no longer strangers and aliens. Rather, you are fellow citizens with God’s people, and you belong to God’s household. 20 As God’s household, you are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 The whole building is joined together in him, and it grows up into a temple that is dedicated to the Lord. 22 Christ is building you into a place where God lives through the Spirit.

2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,(A) 2 in which you used to live(B) when you followed the ways of this world(C) and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,(D) the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.(E) 3 All of us also lived among them at one time,(F) gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a](G) and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us,(H) God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions(I)—it is by grace you have been saved.(J) 6 And God raised us up with Christ(K) and seated us with him(L) in the heavenly realms(M) in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,(N) expressed in his kindness(O) to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace(P) you have been saved,(Q) through faith(R)—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works,(S) so that no one can boast.(T) 10 For we are God’s handiwork,(U) created(V) in Christ Jesus to do good works,(W) which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ

11 Therefore, remember that formerly(X) you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)(Y)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners(Z) to the covenants of the promise,(AA) without hope(AB) and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once(AC) were far away have been brought near(AD) by the blood of Christ.(AE)

14 For he himself is our peace,(AF) who has made the two groups one(AG) and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh(AH) the law with its commands and regulations.(AI) His purpose was to create in himself one(AJ) new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross,(AK) by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace(AL) to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.(AM) 18 For through him we both have access(AN) to the Father(AO) by one Spirit.(AP)

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,(AQ) but fellow citizens(AR) with God’s people and also members of his household,(AS) 20 built(AT) on the foundation(AU) of the apostles and prophets,(AV) with Christ Jesus himself(AW) as the chief cornerstone.(AX) 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple(AY) in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.(AZ)
