Tänk på din Skapare när du är ung
12 Låt inte din glädje över att vara ung få dig att glömma din Skapare. Lev för honom när du är ung, innan de mörka åren kommer och du inte längre kan njuta av livet.
2 Då är det för sent att tänka på honom, när solen och ljuset och månen och stjärnorna blir dunkla för dina gamla ögon, och då de mörka molnen hopar sig på himlen.
3 Det kommer nämligen en tid när din kropp kommer att darra av ålder, då dina ben som nu är starka blir svaga, då dina tänder blir för få för att tugga den mat du äter. Du kanske också rentav blir blind.
4 Då ska du knipa ihop munnen medan du äter, för du saknar dina tänder. Ja, då kommer du att vakna samtidigt med fåglarna tidigt om morgonen, men du kommer inte att höra dem, eftersom du är döv. Och när du talar så gör du det med darrande stämma.
5 Du kommer att frukta varje uppförsbacke och våldet på gatorna kommer att skrämma dig. Du är nu en gammal vithårig man som stapplar fram, utan sexuella begär. Du står vid dödens port och på väg till ditt eviga hem, och de sörjande skymtar man redan borta på gatan.
6 Ja, kom ihåg din Skapare medan du är ung, innan silvertråden klipps av, guldskålen krossas, vattenkrukan vid brunnen slås i bitar och hjulet stannar och faller ner.
7 Gör det innan kroppen vänder tillbaka till jorden, som den en gång kom från, och livsanden vänder tillbaka till Gud, som gav den.
8 Ja, allt är meningslöst, säger Predikaren, fullkomligt tomt och innehållslöst.
Frukta Gud och lyd honom
9 Men därför att Predikaren var vis, fortsatte han att lära folket allt han visste, och han samlade ordspråk och prövade deras sanningshalt.
10 Men Predikaren var inte bara en vis man utan också en bra lärare. Och inte nog med att han undervisade folket om det han kände till, han hade också förmågan att göra undervisningen fängslande.
11 Den vises ord är som vassa sporrar som tränger in. De slår fast betydelsefulla sanningar. Och de som studerar gör klokt i att tillgodogöra sig lärarnas undervisning.
12 Men, min son, jag varnar dig: det blir aldrig något slut på allt som skrivs och sägs. Och att ta del av det är dessutom oerhört tröttande!
13 Detta är min slutsats: ha respekt för Gud och lyd hans befallningar, för det är människans absoluta skyldighet.
14 Gud kommer nämligen att döma oss för allt vad vi gör, och för det vi inte gjort, vare sig det är gott eller ont.

12 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Seek God in Early Life
12 Remember(A) now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the [a]difficult days come,
And the years draw near (B)when you say,
“I have no pleasure in them”:
2 While the sun and the light,
The moon and the stars,
Are not darkened,
And the clouds do not return after the rain;
3 In the day when the keepers of the house tremble,
And the strong men bow down;
When the grinders cease because they are few,
And those that look through the windows grow dim;
4 When the doors are shut in the streets,
And the sound of grinding is low;
When one rises up at the sound of a bird,
And all (C)the daughters of music are brought low.
5 Also they are afraid of height,
And of terrors in the way;
When the almond tree blossoms,
The grasshopper is a burden,
And desire fails.
For man goes to (D)his eternal home,
And (E)the mourners go about the streets.
6 Remember your Creator before the silver cord is [b]loosed,
Or the golden bowl is broken,
Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,
Or the wheel broken at the well.

The Whole Duty of Man
9 And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and (J)set[c] in order many proverbs. 10 The Preacher sought to find [d]acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of [e]scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. 12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and (K)much study is wearisome to the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
(L)Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
14 For (M)God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.
