Sabiduría y realeza
8 ¿Quién es como el sabio?
¿Quién sabe interpretar cualquier cosa?
La sabiduría ilumina el rostro humano
y transforma la dureza del semblante.
2 Cumple la orden del rey
en virtud del juramento divino;
3 no tengas prisa en retirarte de su presencia,
ni te empeñes en intrigas,
pues hará todo lo que quiera.
4 La palabra del rey es soberana:
¿quién puede pedirle explicaciones?
5 Quien cumple lo mandado nada sabe de intrigas;
sólo el sabio conoce el tiempo de la decisión,
6 pues cada cosa ha de ser decidida a su tiempo,
porque un grave problema tiene el ser humano:
7 no sabe lo que va a suceder
y nadie se lo anunciará.
8 Nadie es dueño de su vida
ni es capaz de conservarla;
no hay poder sobre la hora de la muerte,
no hay modo de escapar en la batalla,
no salvará la maldad a quien la trama.
9 Esto es lo que he observado reflexionando sobre todo lo que sucede bajo el sol, cuando una persona domina a otra para hacerle daño.
Suertes invertidas
10 Y así, he visto a malvados llevados a enterrar, y al volver del camposanto se alababa en la ciudad su conducta anterior. También esto es vana ilusión: 11 que no se ejecute inmediatamente la sentencia contra las malas acciones, y en consecuencia los humanos están deseando hacer el mal; 12 o también que el pecador haga cien veces el mal y le alarguen la vida. Con todo, yo sé que les va bien a los que respetan a Dios, precisamente por respetarlo.
13 En cambio, no le irá bien al malvado:
no se alargará su vida
que pasará como una sombra,
porque no respeta a Dios.
14 Pero en la tierra tiene lugar otro absurdo:
hay justos tratados según la conducta de los malvados,
y malvados tratados según la conducta de los justos.
Y digo que también esto es un absurdo.
Recomendación de la alegría
15 Así que yo recomiendo la alegría, porque no hay más felicidad para el ser humano bajo el sol que comer, beber y disfrutar, pues eso le acompañará en sus fatigas durante los días que Dios le conceda vivir bajo el sol.
16 Conforme me he dedicado a conocer la sabiduría y a observar las tareas que se hacen en la tierra —pues ni de día ni de noche los ojos conocen el sueño—, 17 he considerado todas las obras de Dios, y el ser humano no puede descubrir todas las obras que se hacen bajo el sol. Por más que el ser humano se afana en buscar, no encuentra; y aunque el sabio pretenda saberlo, tampoco es capaz de descubrirlo.

¿Quién conoce las respuestas?
La sabiduría del hombre hace que resplandezca su rostro
y se ablanden sus facciones.
La obediencia al rey
2 Yo digo: Obedece al rey, porque lo has jurado ante Dios. 3 No te apresures a salir de su presencia. No defiendas una mala causa, porque lo que él quiere hacer, lo hace. 4 Puesto que la palabra del rey tiene autoridad, ¿quién puede pedirle cuentas?
5 El que acata sus órdenes no sufrirá daño alguno.
El corazón sabio sabe cuándo y cómo acatarlas.
6 Para todo lo que se hace hay un cuándo y un cómo,
aunque el ser humano tiene en contra un gran problema:
7 que ninguno conoce el futuro
ni hay quien se lo pueda decir.
8 Nadie tiene poder sobre el viento para retenerlo;[a]
ni hay quien tenga poder sobre el día de su muerte.
No hay licencias durante la batalla,
ni la maldad deja libre al malvado.
Sinrazones de la vida
9 Todo esto vi al dedicarme de lleno a conocer todo lo que se hace bajo el sol: hay veces que el ser humano domina a otros para su propio mal. 10 Vi también a los malvados ser sepultados —los que solían ir y venir del lugar santo—; a ellos se les echó al olvido en la ciudad donde así se condujeron.[b] ¡Y también esto es vanidad!
11 Cuando no se ejecuta rápidamente la sentencia de un delito, el corazón del pueblo se llena de razones para hacer lo malo. 12 El pecador puede hacer lo malo cien veces y vivir muchos años; pero sé también que le irá mejor a quien teme a Dios y le guarda reverencia. 13 En cambio, a los malvados no les irá bien ni vivirán mucho tiempo. Serán como una sombra, porque no temen a Dios.
14 En la tierra suceden cosas que son vanidad, pues hay hombres justos a quienes les va como si fueran malvados y hay malvados a quienes les va como si fueran justos. ¡Y yo digo que también esto es vanidad!
15 Por tanto, celebro la alegría, pues no hay para el ser humano nada mejor bajo el sol que comer, beber y alegrarse. Solo eso le queda de tanto afanarse en esta vida que Dios le ha dado bajo el sol.
16 Al dedicarme al conocimiento de la sabiduría y a la observación de todo cuanto se hace en la tierra, sin poder conciliar el sueño ni de día ni de noche, 17 pude ver todo lo hecho por Dios. ¡El hombre no puede comprender todo lo que se hace bajo el sol! Por más que se esfuerce por hallarle sentido, no lo encontrará; aun cuando el sabio diga conocerlo, no lo puede comprender.

8 Who is like the wise?
Who knows the explanation of things?
A person’s wisdom brightens their face
and changes its hard appearance.
Obey the King
2 Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God. 3 Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence.(A) Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases. 4 Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?(B)”
5 Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm,
and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.
6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter,(C)
though a person may be weighed down by misery.
7 Since no one knows the future,
who can tell someone else what is to come?
8 As no one has power over the wind to contain it,
so[a] no one has power over the time of their death.
As no one is discharged in time of war,
so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
9 All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own[b] hurt. 10 Then too, I saw the wicked buried(D)—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise[c] in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.
11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong. 12 Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better(E) with those who fear God,(F) who are reverent before him.(G) 13 Yet because the wicked do not fear God,(H) it will not go well with them, and their days(I) will not lengthen like a shadow.
14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve.(J) This too, I say, is meaningless.(K) 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life(L), because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink(M) and be glad.(N) Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.
16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom(O) and to observe the labor that is done on earth(P)—people getting no sleep day or night— 17 then I saw all that God has done.(Q) No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.(R)

8 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2 I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10 And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12 Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16 When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
