7 Vale más el buen nombre
que el buen perfume.
Vale más el día en que se muere
que el día en que se nace.
2 Vale más ir a un funeral
que a un festival.
Pues la muerte es el fin de todo hombre, y los que viven debieran tenerlo presente.
3 Vale más llorar que reír;
pues entristece el rostro,
pero le hace bien al corazón.
4 El sabio tiene presente la muerte;
el necio solo piensa en la diversión.
5 Vale más reprensión de sabios
que lisonja de necios.
6 Pues las carcajadas de los necios son como el crepitar de las espinas bajo la olla. ¡Y también esto es absurdo!
7 La extorsión entorpece al sabio,
y el soborno corrompe su corazón.
8 Vale más el fin de algo
que su principio.
Vale más la paciencia
que la arrogancia.
9 No te dejes llevar por el enojo
que solo abriga el corazón del necio.
10 Nunca preguntes por qué todo tiempo pasado fue mejor. No es de sabios hacer tales preguntas.
11 Buena es la sabiduría sumada a la heredad, y provechosa para los que viven. 12 Puedes ponerte a la sombra de la sabiduría o a la sombra del dinero, pero la sabiduría tiene la ventaja de dar vida a quien la posee.
13 Contempla las obras de Dios: ¿quién puede enderezar lo que él ha torcido? 14 Cuando te vengan buenos tiempos, disfrútalos; pero, cuando te lleguen los malos, piensa que unos y otros son obra de Dios, y que el hombre nunca sabe con qué habrá de encontrarse después.
15 Todo esto he visto durante mi absurda vida: hombres justos a quienes su justicia los destruye, y hombres malvados a quienes su maldad les alarga la vida.
16 No seas demasiado justo,
ni tampoco demasiado sabio.
¿Para qué destruirte
a ti mismo?
17 No hay que pasarse de malo,
ni portarse como un necio.
¿Para qué morir
antes de tiempo?
18 Conviene asirse bien de esto,
sin soltar de la mano aquello.
Quien teme a Dios
saldrá bien en todo.
19 Más fortalece la sabiduría al sabio
que diez gobernantes a una ciudad.
20 No hay en la tierra nadie tan justo
que haga el bien y nunca peque.
21 No prestes atención a todo lo que se dice, y así no oirás cuando tu siervo hable mal de ti, 22 aunque bien sabes que muchas veces también tú has hablado mal de otros.
Tras la razón de las cosas
23 Todo esto lo examiné muy bien y con sabiduría, pues me dispuse a ser sabio, pero la sabiduría estaba fuera de mi alcance. 24 Lejos y demasiado profundo está todo cuanto existe. ¿Quién puede dar con ello?
25 Volví entonces mi atención hacia el conocimiento, para investigar e indagar acerca de la sabiduría y la razón de las cosas, y me di cuenta de la insensatez de la maldad y la locura de la necedad. 26 Y encontré algo más amargo que la muerte: a la mujer que es una trampa, que por corazón tiene una red y por brazos tiene cadenas. Quien agrada a Dios se librará de ella, pero el pecador caerá en sus redes.
27 Y dijo el Maestro: «Mirad lo que he hallado al buscar la razón de las cosas, una por una: 28 ¡que todavía estoy buscando lo que no he encontrado! Ya he dado con un hombre entre mil, pero entre todas las mujeres aún no he encontrado ninguna. 29 Tan solo he hallado lo siguiente: que Dios hizo perfecto al género humano, pero este se ha buscado demasiadas complicaciones».

Dios Habla Hoy
Hay que atender a lo más importante
7 Vale más la buena fama
que el buen perfume.
Vale más el día en que se muere
que el día en que se nace.
2 Vale más ir a un funeral
que ir a divertirse;
pues la muerte es el fin de todo hombre,
y los que viven debieran recordarlo.
3 Vale más llorar que reír,
pues podrá hacerle mal al semblante
pero le hace bien al corazón.
4 El sabio piensa en la muerte,
pero el necio, en ir a divertirse.
5 Vale más oír reprensiones de sabios
que alabanzas de necios.
6 Las risas del necio se parecen
al crujir de las zarzas en el fuego,
y también son vana ilusión.
7 La violencia entorpece al sabio,
y el soborno corrompe su carácter.
8 Vale más terminar un asunto
que comenzarlo.
Vale más ser paciente
que valiente.
9 No te dejes llevar por el enojo, porque el enojo es propio de gente necia.
10 Nunca te preguntes por qué todo tiempo pasado fue mejor, pues ésa no es una pregunta inteligente.
11 Buena y provechosa es la sabiduría para los que viven en este mundo, si además va acompañada de una herencia. 12 Porque la sabiduría protege lo mismo que el dinero, pero la sabiduría tiene la ventaja de darle vida al sabio.
13 Fíjate bien en lo que Dios ha hecho: ¿quién podrá enderezar lo que él ha torcido? 14 Cuando te vaya bien, disfruta ese bienestar; pero cuando te vaya mal, ponte a pensar que lo uno y lo otro son cosa de Dios, y que el hombre nunca sabe lo que ha de traerle el futuro.
15 Todo esto he visto durante esta vana ilusión que es mi vida: hombres buenos que mueren a pesar de su bondad, y malvados que a pesar de su maldad viven muchos años.
16 No hay que pasarse de bueno,
ni tampoco pasarse de listo.
¿Para qué arruinarse uno mismo?
17 No hay que pasarse de malo,
ni tampoco pasarse de tonto.
¿Para qué morir antes de tiempo?
18 Lo mejor es agarrar bien esto
sin soltar de la mano aquello.
El que honra a Dios
saldrá bien de todas estas cosas.
19 Da más fuerza la sabiduría al sabio,
que diez gobernantes a una ciudad.
20 Sin embargo, no hay nadie en la tierra tan perfecto que haga siempre el bien y nunca peque.
21 No hagas caso de todo lo que se dice, y así no oirás cuando tu siervo hable mal de ti. 22 Aunque también tú, y lo sabes muy bien, muchas veces has hablado mal de otros.
Búsqueda de la sabiduría
23 Todo esto lo examiné con sabiduría, pues me había propuesto ser sabio; pero estaba fuera de mi alcance. 24 ¡Fuera de mi alcance está todo lo que existe! ¡Es demasiado profundo y nadie puede comprenderlo!
25 Me dediqué entonces a adquirir conocimientos, y a estudiar y buscar algunas sabias conclusiones. Y pude darme cuenta de que es malo ser necio, y una locura ser estúpido.
26 He encontrado algo que es más amargo que la muerte: la mujer que tiende trampas con el corazón y aprisiona con los brazos. El que agrada a Dios escapará de ella, pero el pecador caerá en sus redes.
27 En mi intento de encontrar la razón de las cosas, yo, el Predicador, he hallado lo siguiente: 28 ¡que todavía no he dado con lo que realmente busco! He encontrado un hombre entre mil, pero ni una sola mujer entre todas ellas. 29 Solamente he encontrado lo siguiente: que Dios hizo perfecto al hombre, pero éste se ha complicado la vida.

Living Bible
7 A good reputation is more valuable than the most expensive perfume.
The day one dies is better than the day he is born! 2 It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and it is a good thing to think about it while there is still time. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us. 4 Yes, a wise man thinks much of death, while the fool thinks only of having a good time now.
5 It is better to be criticized by a wise man than to be praised by a fool! 6 For a fool’s compliment is as quickly gone as paper in fire, and it is silly to be impressed by it.
7 The wise man is turned into a fool by a bribe; it destroys his understanding.
8 Finishing is better than starting! Patience is better than pride! 9 Don’t be quick-tempered—that is being a fool.
10 Don’t long for “the good old days,” for you don’t know whether they were any better than these!
11 To be wise is as good as being rich; in fact, it is better. 12 You can get anything by either wisdom or money, but being wise has many advantages.
13 See the way God does things and fall into line. Don’t fight the facts of nature.[a] Who can straighten what he has made crooked? 14 Enjoy prosperity whenever you can, and when hard times strike, realize that God gives one as well as the other—so that everyone will realize that nothing is certain in this life.
15-17 In this silly life I have seen everything, including the fact that some of the good die young and some of the wicked live on and on. So don’t be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself? On the other hand, don’t be too wicked either—don’t be a fool! Why should you die before your time?
18 Tackle every task that comes along, and if you fear God, you can expect his blessing.
19 A wise man is stronger than the mayors of ten big cities! 20 And there is not a single man in all the earth who is always good and never sins.
21-22 Don’t eavesdrop! You may hear your servant cursing you! For you know how often you yourself curse others!
23 I have tried my best to be wise. I declared, “I will be wise,” but it didn’t work. 24 Wisdom is far away and very difficult to find. 25 I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and the reason for things . . . to prove to myself the wickedness of folly and that foolishness is madness.
26 A prostitute[b] is more bitter than death. May it please God that you escape from her, but sinners don’t evade her snares.
27-28 This is my conclusion, says the Preacher. Step by step I came to this result after researching in every direction: One tenth of one percent of the men I interviewed could be said to be wise, but not one woman!
29 And I found that though God has made men upright, each has turned away to follow his own downward road.

7 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
