For whoever is joined with all the living, there is confidence; surely a live dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know they will die; but the dead (A)do not know anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for the (B)memory of them is forgotten. Indeed their love, their hate, and their zeal have already perished, and they will never again have a (C)portion in all that is done under the sun.

Go then, (D)eat your bread in gladness and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works. Let your (E)clothes be white all the time, and let not (F)oil be lacking on your head. See life with the woman whom you love all the days of your (G)vain life, which He has given to you under the sun—all the days of your (H)vanity; for this is your (I)portion in life and in your labor in which you have labored under the sun.

Now, whoever is still joined to all the living has hope, because a living dog is better than a dead lion. At least the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because all memory of them is forgotten. Their love, their hate, and their envy have already perished, and they will never again take part in anything done under the sun.

Go ahead, eat your food with joy, and drink your wine with a happy heart, for God is already pleased with what you do. Wear white clothes all the time. Always put lotion on your head.

Enjoy life with the wife you love all the days of your life, that vanishes like vapor, the life which God has given you under the sun, all the days that vanish like vapor,[a] for that is your portion in life and your reward from all the hard work at which you worked so hard under the sun.

10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your strength, for there is no work, planning, knowledge, or wisdom in the grave, where you are heading.
