Hãy Vâng Phục Vua và Tận Hưởng Cuộc Sống
8 Có ai như một người khôn ngoan chăng? Có ai có tri thức để có thể giải nghĩa những sự việc ở đời chăng? Sự khôn ngoan làm nét mặt của người khôn ngời sáng, và vẻ cứng rắn trên gương mặt của người ấy cũng dịu đi.
2 Tôi khuyên: Hãy vâng lời vua, vì bạn đã thề trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời sẽ làm như vậy. 3 Ðừng hấp tấp rời khỏi mặt vua; chớ đứng lên binh vực cho sự dữ, vì vua có quyền làm điều gì lòng mình muốn. 4 Vì lời vua phán có thẩm quyền, và ai dám hỏi vua, “Ngài định làm gì vậy?” 5 Người nào vâng lệnh vua sẽ không sợ bị vua trị tội. Lòng người khôn biết phân biệt thời thế và hình phạt của mỗi thời, để có thể ứng xử thích nghi. 6 Vì mỗi biến cố xảy ra đều có thời điểm riêng và hình phạt riêng, cho dù dân chúng phải chịu những áp lực đè nặng trên mình. 7 Vì không ai biết điều gì sẽ xảy ra; vậy ai có thể nói cho người khác biết việc gì sẽ xảy ra được?
8 Không ai có quyền trên sinh khí của mình, để có thể giữ sinh khí của mình lại hầu sống mãi. Không ai có quyền trên ngày chết của mình.
Không ai được cho giải ngũ khi lâm trận thể nào, sự gian ác cũng không buông kẻ đã quen làm ác ra thể ấy.
9 Trong tất cả những gì tôi đã thấy xảy ra dưới ánh mặt trời và đã ghi nhớ trong lòng, tôi thấy có điều nầy: Lắm khi người có quyền thế lại là người gây đau khổ cho dân.
10 Tôi cũng thấy điều nầy nữa: Kẻ ác chết và được chôn cất tử tế. Người ta khiêng xác nó từ trong thành thánh ra chôn, và chẳng bao lâu những người trong thành đều quên hết mọi việc ác nó làm. Ðiều đó cũng là vô nghĩa.
11 Vì án phạt dành cho kẻ phạm tội ác không được thi hành nhanh chóng, nên lòng người cứ toan tính chuyện làm ác.
12 Có kẻ phạm tội cả trăm lần mà vẫn sống lâu, nhưng tôi biết chắc một điều: Ai kính sợ Ðức Chúa Trời sẽ được phước, vì người ấy biết lấy lòng kính sợ mà sống trước mặt Ngài. 13 Nhưng kẻ ác sẽ không được phước, và đời nó khó kéo dài, nhưng sẽ qua mau như chiếc bóng, vì nó không biết lấy lòng kính sợ mà sống trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời.
14 Có một việc vô nghĩa mà tôi đã thấy xảy ra trên đất: Người ngay lành gặp chuyện không may xảy đến cho mình, mà đáng lý kẻ ác phải gặp chuyện ấy mới đúng, trong khi đó kẻ ác lại được may mắn, mà đáng lý điều may mắn ấy phải xảy đến cho người ngay lành mới đúng. Tôi nói: điều đó cũng là vô nghĩa.
15 Do đó tôi khuyên mọi người nên hưởng lấy niềm vui tìm thấy trong cuộc sống, bởi vì không có gì tốt hơn cho con người dưới ánh mặt trời là ăn, uống, và tận hưởng niềm vui. Vì đó là những dư âm sẽ còn lại sau những ngày gian khổ của cuộc đời mà Ðức Chúa Trời đã ban cho mỗi người dưới ánh mặt trời.
16 Khi tôi để tâm trí tìm biết sự khôn ngoan và quan sát công việc loài người đã làm trên đất –công việc mà cả ngày lẫn đêm người ta không dám chợp mắt, hầu thực hiện cho được– 17 bấy giờ tôi thấy rằng tất cả chẳng qua là công việc của Ðức Chúa Trời. Không ai có thể hiểu được những gì đang diễn ra dưới ánh mặt trời. Dù người ta cố công tìm kiếm bao nhiêu, họ cũng không thể nào hiểu hết được; ngay cả kẻ tự cho mình là khôn ngoan trí thức và quán thông kim cổ vẫn không sao hiểu biết được mọi sự.

8 Who is like a wise man?
And who knows the interpretation of a thing?
(A)A man’s wisdom makes his face shine,
And (B)the [a]sternness of his face is changed.
Obey Authorities for God’s Sake
2 I say, “Keep the king’s commandment (C)for the sake of your oath to God. 3 (D)Do not be hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand for an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him.”
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power;
And (E)who may say to him, “What are you doing?”
5 He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful;
And a wise man’s heart [b]discerns both time and judgment,
6 Because (F)for every matter there is a time and judgment,
Though the misery of man [c]increases greatly.
7 (G)For he does not know what will happen;
So who can tell him when it will occur?
8 (H)No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit,
And no one has power in the day of death.
There is (I)no release from that war,
And wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.
9 All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.
Death Comes to All
10 Then I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of holiness, and they were (J)forgotten[d] in the city where they had so done. This also is vanity. 11 (K)Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. 12 (L)Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet I surely know that (M)it will be well with those who fear God, who fear before Him. 13 But it will not be well with the wicked; nor will he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
14 There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it (N)happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the (O)righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
15 (P)So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that (Q)a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.

8 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2 I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10 And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12 Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16 When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

Keep the King's Command
8 Who is like the wise?
And who knows the interpretation of a thing?
(A)A man's wisdom makes his face shine,
and (B)the hardness of his face is changed.
2 I say:[a] Keep the king's command, because of (C)God's oath to him.[b] 3 Be not hasty to (D)go from his presence. Do not take your stand in an evil cause, for he does whatever he pleases. 4 For the word of the king is supreme, and (E)who may say to him, “What are you doing?” 5 Whoever keeps a command will know no evil thing, and the wise heart will know the proper time and the just way.[c] 6 For there is a time and a way (F)for everything, although man's trouble[d] lies heavy on him. 7 For he (G)does not know what is to be, for (H)who can tell him how it will be? 8 No man has power to (I)retain the spirit, (J)or power over the day of death. There is no (K)discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it. 9 (L)All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt.
Those Who Fear God Will Do Well
10 Then I saw the wicked buried. They used to go in and out of (M)the holy place and were (N)praised[e] in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.[f] 11 Because (O)the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, (P)the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil. 12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and (Q)prolongs his life, yet I know that (R)it will be well with (S)those who fear God, because they fear before him. 13 But it will (T)not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like (U)a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
Man Cannot Know God's Ways
14 There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people (V)to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people (W)to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. 15 And I commend joy, for man (X)has nothing better under the sun but to (Y)eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see (Z)the business that is done on earth, how neither (AA)day nor night do one's eyes see sleep, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that (AB)man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out. Even though a wise man claims to know, (AC)he cannot find it out.
