5 (2) Don’t speak impulsively — don’t be in a hurry
to give voice to your words before God.
For God is in heaven, and you are on earth;
so let your words be few.
2 (3) For nightmares come from worrying too much;
and a fool, when he speaks, chatters too much.
3 (4) If you make a vow to God, don’t delay in discharging it. For God takes no pleasure in fools, so discharge your vow! 4 (5) Better not to make a vow than to make a vow and not discharge it. 5 (6) Don’t let your words make you guilty, and don’t tell the temple official that you made the vow by mistake. Why give God reason to be angry at what you say and destroy what you have accomplished? 6 (7) For [this is what happens when there are too] many dreams, aimless activities and words. Instead, just fear God!
7 (8) If you see the poor oppressed, rights violated and justice perverted in the province, don’t be surprised; for a high official has one higher watching him, and there are others above them. 8 (9) But the greatest advantage to the country is when the king makes himself a servant to the land.
9 (10) The lover of money never has enough money;
the lover of luxury never has enough income.
This too is pointless.
10 (11) When the quantity of goods increases,
so does the number of parasites consuming them;
so the only advantage to the owner is
that he gets to watch them do it.
11 (12) The sleep of a working man is sweet,
whether he eats little or much;
but the overfullness of the rich
won’t let them sleep at all.
12 (13) Here is a gross evil which I have seen under the sun: the owner of wealth hoards it to his own hurt.
13 (14) Due to some misfortune,
the wealth turns to loss;
and then if he has fathered a son,
he has nothing to leave him.
14 (15) Just as he came from his mother’s womb,
so he will go back naked as he came,
and for his efforts he will take nothing
that he can carry away in his hand.
15 (16) This too is a gross evil, that in every respect as he came, so will he go; thus what profit does he have after toiling to earn the wind? 16 (17) All his life he eats in darkness, in frustration, in sickness and in anger.
17 (18) This is what I have seen to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, drink and enjoy the good that results from all his work that he engages in under the sun for all the days of his life that God has given him, for this is his allotted portion. 18 (19) Also, everyone to whom God has given riches and wealth, along with the power to enjoy it, so that he takes his allotted portion and finds pleasure in his work — this is a gift of God; 19 (20) for he will not brood over the fact that his life is short, since God keeps him occupied with what will bring him joy.

Fulfill Your Vow to God
5 [a]Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.
2 Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.(A)
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.(B)
3 A dream(C) comes when there are many cares,
and many words mark the speech of a fool.(D)
4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it.(E) He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.(F) 5 It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.(G) 6 Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? 7 Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.(H)
Riches Are Meaningless
8 If you see the poor oppressed(I) in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. 9 The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.
10 Whoever loves money never has enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
This too is meaningless.
11 As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
except to feast their eyes on them?
12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,
whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance
permits them no sleep.(J)
13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:(K)
wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,
14 or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when they have children
there is nothing left for them to inherit.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb,
and as everyone comes, so they depart.(L)
They take nothing from their toil(M)
that they can carry in their hands.(N)
16 This too is a grievous evil:
As everyone comes, so they depart,
and what do they gain,
since they toil for the wind?(O)
17 All their days they eat in darkness,
with great frustration, affliction and anger.
18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink(P) and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor(Q) under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions,(R) and the ability to enjoy them,(S) to accept their lot(T) and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.(U) 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.(V)

To draw near to listen is better than to (C)offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. 2 [b] Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore (D)let your words be few. 3 For a dream comes with much business, and a fool's voice with (E)many words.
4 When (F)you vow a vow to God, (G)do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. (H)Pay what you vow. 5 (I)It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. 6 Let not your mouth lead you[c] into sin, and do not say before (J)the messenger[d] that it was (K)a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? 7 For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity;[e] but[f] (L)God is the one you must fear.
The Vanity of Wealth and Honor
8 (M)If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, (N)do not be amazed at the matter, (O)for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them. 9 But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields.[g]
10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.
13 (P)There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. 15 (Q)As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what (R)gain is there to him who (S)toils for the wind? 17 Moreover, all his days he (T)eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger.
18 Behold, what I have seen to be (U)good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment[h] in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his (V)lot. 19 Everyone also to whom (W)God has given (X)wealth and possessions (Y)and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is (Z)the gift of God. 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.

5 Hãy cẩn thận khi bạn bước chân đến nhà Ðức Chúa Trời. Hãy lại gần để nghe hơn là để dâng của tế lễ của những kẻ dại, vì chúng không biết rằng chúng đã làm những điều gian tà tội lỗi. 2 Chớ hấp tấp mở miệng, và đừng vội vàng thốt ra những gì bạn nghĩ trong lòng trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời, vì Ðức Chúa Trời ở trên trời, còn bạn ở dưới đất. Vậy khá ít lời.
3 Vì có nhiều điều lo lắng ắt sẽ sinh chiêm bao, và người nói nhiều ắt sẽ thành kẻ dại.
4 Khi bạn hứa nguyện điều gì với Ðức Chúa Trời, khá mau thực hiện lời hứa nguyện đó, vì Ngài không thích những kẻ dại. Hãy mau chóng trả những gì bạn đã khấn hứa. 5 Thà đừng khấn hứa hơn là khấn hứa mà không trả. 6 Chớ để miệng bạn gây cho bạn mắc tội. Ðừng nói với sứ giả của Chúa rằng, “Tôi chỉ nói chơi thôi.” Tại sao bạn làm cho Ðức Chúa Trời nổi giận về những lời bạn nói và phá đổ công việc của tay bạn? 7 Vì mơ mộng nhiều và nói nhiều nhưng không làm gì thì cũng vô nghĩa mà thôi. Vậy hãy kính sợ Ðức Chúa Trời.
Cố Sức Làm Giàu Ðể Ðược Gì
8 Nếu bạn thấy người nghèo bị đàn áp, luật pháp và công lý bị chà đạp trong xứ, thì đừng lấy làm lạ về điều đó, vì trên kẻ có quyền có người khác có quyền hơn giám thị, và trên họ còn có người khác nữa có quyền hơn.
9 Hoa màu do đất đai sinh sản nuôi sống mọi người, ngay cả vua cũng được ruộng đồng nuôi sống.
10 Kẻ ham tiền, dù có tiền nhiều bao nhiêu vẫn không thấy đủ. Kẻ ham giàu, dù của cải nhiều đến mức nào vẫn không thấy thỏa lòng. Ðiều đó cũng là vô nghĩa.
11 Của cải gia tăng, số người ăn cũng gia tăng. Người có của sẽ được gì, ngoại trừ được chính mắt mình nhìn thấy chúng?
12 Người lao động vất vả sẽ ngủ ngon, bất kể người ấy ăn ít hay nhiều; nhưng kẻ lắm bạc nhiều tiền sẽ khó bề an giấc.
13 Tôi đã thấy một nỗi bất hạnh đau thương thường xảy ra dưới ánh mặt trời: của cải của người tích trữ chính là nguyên nhân gây họa cho người ấy.
14 Của cải mất sạch khi làm ăn thất bại; dù người ấy có con, đứa con chỉ hưởng được tay không.
15 Một người trắng tay lọt ra khỏi lòng mẹ thể nào, người ấy cũng sẽ ra đi với hai bàn tay trắng thể ấy. Tay người ấy sẽ không thể mang theo gì do công sức của mình làm ra. 16 Ðây cũng là một nỗi bất hạnh đau thương: người ta chào đời thể nào thì lìa đời cũng thể ấy. Người ta làm lụng vất vả suốt đời để được gì, há chẳng phải chỉ là hoài công bắt gió hay sao? 17 Thật vậy con người suốt đời cứ thức khuya dậy sớm làm lụng đầu tắt mặt tối, và vật vã với biết bao sầu não, ốm đau, và bực bội.
18 Này, tôi thấy rằng không gì tốt hơn và thích hợp hơn cho con người là ăn, uống, và tận hưởng những gì do mọi công lao của mình làm được dưới ánh mặt trời, trong những ngày ngắn ngủi của cuộc đời mà Ðức Chúa Trời đã cho mình, vì đó là phần phước của mình. 19 Thiết tưởng, người nào được Ðức Chúa Trời ban cho của cải và giàu có, và còn ban cho người ấy ăn uống còn biết ngon, thì nên nhận lấy phần phước đó và hưởng những gì do công lao của mình làm ra, vì đó là món quà của Ðức Chúa Trời cho mình. 20 Bấy giờ người ấy sẽ không còn bận tâm về những ngày gian khổ của đời mình nữa, vì Ðức Chúa Trời ban cho lòng người ấy tràn đầy niềm vui.
