Ecclesiastes 4
King James Version
4 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
2 Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
3 Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4 Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
14 For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

L'oppression et la solitude
4 J'ai examiné ensuite toutes les oppressions qui se commettent sous le soleil: les opprimés sont dans les larmes et personne ne les console! La force est du côté de leurs oppresseurs et personne ne les console! 2 J'ai alors déclaré que les morts sont plus heureux d’être déjà morts que les vivants d’être encore en vie, 3 et j’ai déclaré plus heureux encore que les uns et les autres celui qui n'a pas encore vécu, puisqu’il n'a pas vu le mal qui se commet sous le soleil.
4 J'ai vu que toute la peine que l’on se donne et tout le succès que l’on recherche dans une entreprise ne sont motivés que par la jalousie de l'homme vis-à-vis de son prochain. Cela aussi, c’est de la fumée et cela revient à poursuivre le vent.
5 L’homme stupide croise les bras et se détruit lui-même. 6 Mieux vaut une poignée pleine de repos que deux poignées pleines de travail et d’une activité qui revient à poursuivre le vent.
7 J'ai examiné une autre réalité qui n’est que fumée sous le soleil: 8 un homme peut être seul, sans aucun proche, sans fils ni frère, et pourtant son travail n'a pas de fin et ses yeux ne sont jamais rassasiés de richesses. «Pour qui donc est-ce que je travaille et me prive de bonheur?» se demande-t-il. Cela aussi, c’est de la fumée et une mauvaise occupation.
9 Il vaut mieux être deux que tout seul, parce qu’à deux on retire un bon profit du travail. 10 En effet, en cas de chute, l'un relève son compagnon, mais malheur à celui qui est seul et qui tombe sans avoir de proche pour le relever! 11 De même, si deux personnes dorment ensemble, elles auront chaud, mais celui qui est seul, comment aura-t-il chaud? 12 Si quelqu'un peut l’emporter contre un seul homme, à deux on peut lui résister; la corde à trois fils ne se coupe pas facilement.
13 Mieux vaut être un enfant pauvre et sage qu'un roi vieux et stupide qui ne sait plus se laisser avertir. 14 Oui, il peut même sortir de prison pour régner ou être né pauvre dans son royaume: 15 j'ai vu tous les êtres vivants qui marchent sous le soleil se rallier à l'enfant destiné à succéder au roi et à régner à sa place; 16 il n'y avait pas de fin à tout ce peuple, à tous ceux dont il avait pris la tête. Pourtant, les générations suivantes ne se réjouiront plus à son sujet. Oui, cela aussi, c’est de la fumée et cela revient à poursuivre le vent.
Danger de la langue
17 Veille sur ton pied, lorsque tu entres dans la maison de Dieu: approche-toi pour écouter, au lieu d’offrir le sacrifice que présentent les hommes stupides parce qu’ils ne savent pas qu'ils agissent mal.

4 I looked again and saw people being mistreated everywhere on earth. They were crying, but no one was there to offer comfort, and those who mistreated them were powerful. 2 I said to myself, “The dead are better off than the living. 3 But those who have never been born are better off than anyone else, because they have never seen the terrible things that happen on this earth.”
4 Then I realized that we work and do wonderful things just because we are jealous of others. This makes no more sense than chasing the wind.[a]
5 Fools will fold their hands
and starve to death.
6 Yet a very little food
eaten in peace
is better than twice as much
earned from overwork
and chasing the wind.[b]
7 Once again I saw that nothing on earth makes sense. 8 For example, some people don't have friends or family. But they are never satisfied with what they own, and they never stop working to get more. They should ask themselves, “Why am I always working to have more? Who will get what I leave behind?” What a senseless and miserable life!
It Is Better To Have a Friend
9 You are better having a friend than to be all alone, because then you will get more enjoyment out of what you earn. 10 If you fall, your friend can help you up. But if you fall without having a friend nearby, you are really in trouble. 11 If you sleep alone, you won't have anyone to keep you warm on a cold night. 12 Someone might be able to beat up one of you, but not both of you. As the saying goes, “A rope made from three strands of cord is hard to break.”
13 You may be poor and young, but if you are wise, you are better off than a foolish old king who won't listen to advice. 14 Even if you were not born into the royal family and have been a prisoner and poor, you can still be king. 15 I once saw everyone in the world follow a young leader who came to power after the king was gone. 16 His followers could not even be counted. But years from now, no one will praise him—this makes no more sense than chasing the wind.[c]
