A Time for Everything

For everything there is a season, and (A)a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to (B)die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to (C)weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to (D)dance;
a time to (E)cast away stones, and a time to (F)gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to (G)refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to (H)lose;
a time to keep, and a time to (I)cast away;
a time to (J)tear, and a time to sew;
a time to (K)keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to (L)hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (A)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (B)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (C)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (D)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (E)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (F)will leave me alone. (G)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (H)in me you may have peace. (I)In the world you will have (J)tribulation. But (K)take heart; (L)I have overcome the world.”

Bless our God, O peoples;
    let the sound of his praise be heard,
who has kept our soul among the living
    and (A)has not let our feet slip.
10 For you, O God, have (B)tested us;
    you have tried us as silver is tried.
11 You brought us into (C)the net;
    you laid a crushing burden on our backs;
12 you let men (D)ride over our heads;
    we went through fire and through (E)water;
yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.

Not only that, but we (A)rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering (B)produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and (C)hope does not put us to shame, because God's love (D)has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Testing of Your Faith

(A)Count it all joy, my brothers,[a] when you meet trials (B)of various kinds, for you know that (C)the testing of your faith (D)produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be (E)perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

  1. James 1:2 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters; also verses 16, 19

who by God's power are being guarded (A)through faith for a salvation (B)ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by (C)various trials, so that (D)the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes (E)though it is tested by (F)fire—may be found to result in (G)praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (H)Though you have not seen him, you love him. (I)Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining (J)the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Do Not Be Anxious

22 And he said to his disciples, (A)“Therefore I tell you, (B)do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 (C)Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. (D)Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his (E)span of life?[a] 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?
