I made my works great: I (A)built houses for myself; I planted (B)vineyards for myself; I made for myself (C)gardens and (D)parks, and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees; I made for myself (E)pools of water from which to water a forest of growing trees. I bought male and female slaves, and I had [a](F)homeborn slaves. Also I possessed flocks and (G)herds larger than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. Also, I collected for myself silver and (H)gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I provided for myself (I)male and female singers and the pleasures of the sons of men—many concubines.

Then I became (J)great and increased more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also stood by me. 10 (K)All that my eyes asked for I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any gladness, for my heart was glad because of all my labor, and this was my (L)reward for all my labor. 11 Thus I turned to all my works which my hands had done and the labor which I had labored to do, and behold, all was [b](M)vanity and striving after wind, and there was (N)no advantage under the sun.

Qohelet’s Investigation of Personal Accomplishment

I accomplished great things.[a] I built for myself houses; I planted for myself vineyards. I made for myself gardens and parks, and I planted all sorts of fruit trees in them. I made for myself pools of water from which to irrigate a grove of flourishing trees. I acquired male slaves and female slaves, as well as children born in my house. I also had livestock, cattle, and flocks more than anyone who was before me in Jerusalem. I also gathered to myself silver and gold—the royal and provincial treasuries. I acquired for myself male and female singers, as well as the delight of men,[b] voluptuous concubines.[c]

Thus, I accomplished far more[d] than anyone who was before me in Jerusalem—indeed, my wisdom stood by me. 10 I neither withheld anything from my eyes that they desired, nor did I deprive any pleasure from my heart. My heart rejoiced in all my toil, for this was my reward from all my toil. 11 Yet when I considered[e] all the effort which I expended and the toil with which I toiled to do, then behold, “Everything is vanity and chasing wind! There is nothing profitable under the sun!”
