The Vanity of Self-Indulgence

2 I ^(A)said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.^[a]

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up ^(A)for many years; relax, ^(B)eat, drink, be merry.”’

¹⁵ And I commend joy, for man ^(A)has nothing better under the sun but to ^(B)eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.

^5 (A)You have lived on the earth in luxury and ^(B)in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in ^(C)a day of slaughter.

Warning to the Rich

5 Come now, ^(A)you rich, weep and howl for the ^(B)miseries that are coming upon you.

Boasting About Tomorrow

¹³ Come now, you who say, ^(A)“Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”—

³ For ^(A)we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
