Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your (A)vain[a] life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your (B)portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, (C)do it with your might,[b] (D)for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.

Wisdom Better Than Folly

11 (E)Again I saw that under the sun (F)the race is not to the swift, nor (G)the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and (H)chance (I)happen to them all. 12 For man (J)does not know his time. Like fish that are taken in an evil net, and (K)like birds that are caught in a snare, so the children of man are (L)snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.

13 I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me. 14 There was a little city with few men in it, and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siegeworks against it. 15 But there was found in it (M)a poor, wise man, and he by his (N)wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man. 16 But I say that (O)wisdom is better than might, though (P)the poor man's wisdom is despised and his words are not heard.

17 The words of the wise heard in (Q)quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools. 18 (R)Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but (S)one sinner destroys much good.

10 Dead flies make (T)the perfumer's ointment give off a stench;
    so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.
(U)A wise man's heart inclines him to the right,
    but a fool's heart to the left.
Even when the fool walks on the road, he lacks sense,
    and he (V)says to everyone that he is a fool.
If the anger of the ruler rises against you, (W)do not leave your place,
    (X)for calmness[c] will lay great offenses to rest.

There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were (Y)an error proceeding from the ruler: (Z)folly is set in many high places, and the rich sit in a low place. (AA)I have seen slaves (AB)on horses, and princes walking on the ground like slaves.

He who (AC)digs a pit will fall into it,
    and (AD)a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall.
(AE)He who quarries stones is hurt by them,
    and he who (AF)splits logs is endangered by them.
10 If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge,
    he must use more strength,
    but wisdom helps one to succeed.[d]
11 If the serpent bites before it is (AG)charmed,
    there is no advantage to the charmer.

12 The words of a wise man's mouth (AH)win him favor,[e]
    but (AI)the lips of a fool consume him.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness,
    and the end of his talk is evil madness.
14 (AJ)A fool multiplies words,
    though no man knows what is to be,
    and who can tell him (AK)what will be after him?
15 The toil of a fool wearies him,
    for he does not know (AL)the way to the city.

16 (AM)Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child,
    and your princes feast in the morning!
17 Happy are you, O land, when your king is the son of the nobility,
    and your princes feast at the proper time,
    for strength, and not for (AN)drunkenness!
18 Through sloth the roof sinks in,
    and through indolence the house leaks.
19 Bread is made for laughter,
    and (AO)wine gladdens life,
    and (AP)money answers everything.
20 Even in your thoughts, (AQ)do not curse the king,
    nor in your (AR)bedroom curse the rich,
for a bird of the air will carry your voice,
    or some winged creature tell the matter.

Cast Your Bread upon the Waters

11 (AS)Cast your bread upon the waters,
    (AT)for you will find it after many days.
(AU)Give a portion to (AV)seven, or even to eight,
    (AW)for you know not what disaster may happen on earth.
If the clouds are full of rain,
    they empty themselves on the earth,
and if a tree falls to the south or to the north,
    in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.
He who observes the wind will not sow,
    and he who regards the clouds will not reap.

As you do not know the way (AX)the spirit comes to (AY)the bones in the womb[f] of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.

In the morning sow your seed, and at evening (AZ)withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.

Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to (BA)see the sun.

So if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember (BB)that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is (BC)vanity.[g]

(BD)Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. (BE)Walk in the ways of your heart and (BF)the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things (BG)God will bring you into judgment.

10 Remove vexation from your heart, and (BH)put away pain[h] from your body, for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.

Remember Your Creator in Your Youth

12 Remember also your Creator in (BI)the days of your youth, before (BJ)the evil days come and the years draw near of which (BK)you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;

Enjoy life with your wife,(A) whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot(B) in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever(C) your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,(D) for in the realm of the dead,(E) where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.(F)

11 I have seen something else under the sun:

The race is not to the swift
    or the battle to the strong,(G)
nor does food come to the wise(H)
    or wealth to the brilliant
    or favor to the learned;
but time and chance(I) happen to them all.(J)

12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
    or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times(K)
    that fall unexpectedly upon them.(L)

Wisdom Better Than Folly

13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom(M) that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.(N) 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.(O)

17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
    than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom(P) is better than weapons of war,
    but one sinner destroys much good.

10 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
    so a little folly(Q) outweighs wisdom and honor.
The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
    but the heart of the fool to the left.
Even as fools walk along the road,
    they lack sense
    and show everyone(R) how stupid they are.
If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
    do not leave your post;(S)
    calmness can lay great offenses to rest.(T)

There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
    the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
Fools are put in many high positions,(U)
    while the rich occupy the low ones.
I have seen slaves on horseback,
    while princes go on foot like slaves.(V)

Whoever digs a pit may fall into it;(W)
    whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.(X)
Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them;
    whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.(Y)

10 If the ax is dull
    and its edge unsharpened,
more strength is needed,
    but skill will bring success.

11 If a snake bites before it is charmed,
    the charmer receives no fee.(Z)

12 Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,(AA)
    but fools are consumed by their own lips.(AB)
13 At the beginning their words are folly;
    at the end they are wicked madness—
14     and fools multiply words.(AC)

No one knows what is coming—
    who can tell someone else what will happen after them?(AD)

15 The toil of fools wearies them;
    they do not know the way to town.

16 Woe to the land whose king was a servant[a](AE)
    and whose princes feast in the morning.
17 Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth
    and whose princes eat at a proper time—
    for strength and not for drunkenness.(AF)

18 Through laziness, the rafters sag;
    because of idle hands, the house leaks.(AG)

19 A feast is made for laughter,
    wine(AH) makes life merry,
    and money is the answer for everything.

20 Do not revile the king(AI) even in your thoughts,
    or curse the rich in your bedroom,
because a bird in the sky may carry your words,
    and a bird on the wing may report what you say.

Invest in Many Ventures

11 Ship(AJ) your grain across the sea;
    after many days you may receive a return.(AK)
Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight;
    you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.

If clouds are full of water,
    they pour rain on the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
    in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
Whoever watches the wind will not plant;
    whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

As you do not know the path of the wind,(AL)
    or how the body is formed[b] in a mother’s womb,(AM)
so you cannot understand the work of God,
    the Maker of all things.

Sow your seed in the morning,
    and at evening let your hands not be idle,(AN)
for you do not know which will succeed,
    whether this or that,
    or whether both will do equally well.

Remember Your Creator While Young

Light is sweet,
    and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.(AO)
However many years anyone may live,
    let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember(AP) the days of darkness,
    for there will be many.
    Everything to come is meaningless.

You who are young, be happy while you are young,
    and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
    and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
    God will bring you into judgment.(AQ)
10 So then, banish anxiety(AR) from your heart
    and cast off the troubles of your body,
    for youth and vigor are meaningless.(AS)

12 Remember(AT) your Creator
    in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(AU) come
    and the years approach when you will say,
    “I find no pleasure in them”—
